How the Boland keeps the cold at bayGERRIT SCHAAFSMA

It has been an icy winter this yearhere in the Boland.

Eskom’s threat of load-sheddingis felt more acutely now than at anyother time of the year.

In a bid to avoid scheduled poweroutages, Eskom provided the fol-lowing suggestions on keepingwarm and saving electricity in thewinter months.

) Buy an electric blanket. They’re thecheapestwayofstayingwarm in bed – but be careful not tokeep themon throughout thenight.Simply turn them on for an hour ortwo just before bed to heat it up. Analternative is touse ahotwater bot-

tle to stay warm.) When heating up your house,

onlyheat thoseroomsthatareoccu-pied – there is no reason to wasteelectricity on empty rooms

) Remember that heaters oper-ate more efficiently in areas whereceilings are insulated and there areno gaps letting cold air into thehouse.

) Insulate your ceiling to helpkeep your house warm in winterand cool in summer.

) It is better (and cheaper) todress warmly than to use a heater.Gazetteventuredoutonabitterly

There is nothing better than a hot water bottle, saythese ladies from the Birdcage coffee shop. GraceZengeni (left) says she always wears a scarf to keepwarm. Esther Ngubane (centre) also often wears ascarf, and loves taking a hot water bottle to bed.Letwine Samurine will pick a hot water bottle overanything else when the cold starts to bite.

Johannes de Kock oftenworks outdoors, so he makessure to keep extra warm. “Inthe mornings I put on two jer-seys, a windbreaker, a scarfand a pair of gloves. At nightI use a hot water bottle.”

See Singa is a gardener from Mozam-bique. His favourite winter warmer is hisscarf.

JJ Thiart is a student at Stellenbosch Uni-versity. “I really love my hoodie and myscarf,” he says. “I also wear thermal un-derpants when it is really cold.”

DOING IT FOR MADIBA: The Maties Football Club visited Kreefgat in Ida’s Valley on 18 Julyas part of the international Mandela Day Celebrations. The initiative to conduct coaching andfun activities in this area is a brainchild of the men’s first team, many of whom come fromthis and surrounding areas. They deemed it not only as their contribution towards the MandelaDay 76 minutes initiative, but also a chance to give something back to their local community. The day started off with a 45 minute coaching clinic and fun activities. This was followed bya 15 minute talk about the importance of the day, general challenges facing the kids as wellas motivational talks on how to overcome them. Then 7 minutes were spent on handing outsnack packs to the kids. The club has now undertaken to do this on an annual basis, withmany similar areas that players call home, being visited. Here are some of the local kids voicingtheir support of the initiative and singing Happy Birthday Madiba! Photo: supplied
