Kayamandi volunteershelp to fight crimeJUSTICE KHUMELA

AKayamandineighbourhoodwatchgroup, the Lukhanyisweni Committee, said theyhave arrested six thieves and handed themover to the police during recent patrols.

The committee says they have been patrol-ling Stellenbosch for the past fourweeks. Theyhave identified the Stellenbosch train stationas one of the top crime hot spots, more so, nowthat winter is approaching.

“Thieves are targeting workers in the earlyhours of the mornings,” said Msitheli SidwellMakhomazi, the committee chairman.

“These thievesare targetingworkersphonesandwallets.Asagroupwehavedecided to takeit upon ourselves to help fight them. They aremaking lifedifficult forworkersandotherStel-lenbosch residents.”

The unfunded committee is based in Kaya-mandi’s Lukhanyisweni section, where thegroup was started.

They said their objective is not to act likethe police, but to catch thieves and take themto the police.

The committee consists of volunteer Kaya-mandi residents. The group does not have afixed membership count and encourage any-one from Kayamandi to join.

They have daily patrols from 03:30 to 08:00,around the train station.

The patrol group ismade up ofmen of differ-entages.Someoftheeldermembersareintheirsixties, with some of the youngest members intheir early twenties.

“The age differencehas beenone of their big-gest challenges when it comes to fitness. Someof the older members are not as energetic andfit enough to chase some thieves,” said Ma-khomazi.

“We caught one criminal who later escaped. He was too fast for our group to catch him.”

Makhomazi has instructed his group not totake the law into their own hands and harassthe thieves they catch.

The patrol group is equipped with threewalkie talkies. The walkie talkies were donat-ed to thembya localbusinessmanwhoappreci-ated their efforts toprotect theneighbourhood.

According to Makhomazi their help has notgone unnoticed and the police have decided tohelp train the committee’s patrol group.

Waterpype: nuwe metodeDie Stellenbosch-munisipaliteit werk van-deesmaandaandie opgradering vanverou-derde waterpyplyne in Dorpstraat.

‘Tjovitjo’ bus saves the dayAs part of last year’s Vodacom Cup “Tjo-vitjo” campaign, Ikaya Primary Schoolin Kayamandi won a branded Tjovitjobusinamomentthatwouldhavealastingpositive impact for the children andteachers at the school

The “Tjovitjo!” branded bus has becomea regular sight in and around Kayamandiand Stellenbosch since Ikaya PrimarySchoolwon it aspart of last year’s “Tjovitjo!”Vodacom Cup campaign.

On any given day the bus ferries the Ikayapupils to and from rugby, soccer, tennis, gymnastics, athleticsandnetballevents.Thebus isalsoused to take thechildrenoneduca-tional schooloutingsand to take Ikaya’s staffto teacher conferences all over the country.

“The Tjovitjo bus has made a huge differ-ence to our school. Before we won the buslast year, we had to hire taxis which was ahuge problem because with 1 400 learners atIkaya, we were sometimes hiring up to fourtaxis at the same time to take our childrento and from sporting events,” said Ikayaheadmistress Tammy Mgijima.

With the added stress of taxis often beinglate or not showing up at all, coordinatinglifts for the Ikaya children became an expen-sive logistic juggling-act that required con-siderable time and careful planning to getright.

The handover of the Tjovitjo bus haschanged all that and the difference it’s madefor the teachers and children at Ikaya is evi-dent in the immense pride the school takesin their bus.

Despite being use so often, one year on the

bus is still in pristine condition and nowboasts a set of personalised “Ikaya” number-plates to compliment the bright, colourfulVodacom Cup “Tjovitjo!” branding thatwraps the bus.

“We are the only school in the region tohave our own bus and because we don’t haveto pay for taxis any more, the bus is savingus upwards of R1 000 a month. There are alsocertainNGOs that sponsor sports like soccerwho have said they will reimburse us for the

petrol we use going to certain events provid-ed we have our own transport. So we fill ina claim form and get money back for petrolinsomeinstances, whichisalsoahugehelp.”

Ikaya won the Tjovitjo bus after takingpart in one of the Tag Rugby clinics last yearthat ran alongside the Vodacom Cup. All theschools that took part were required to sub-mit regular reports after the clinics conclud-ed that detailed how the schools were rollingout sustainable Tag Rugby programmes.

The pupils of Ikaya Primary School lined up to sing songs of praise when the Tjovitjo! bus was deliveredat the end of last year’s Vodacom Cup tournament.

Nurses’ daycelebratedOn12Maythisyearnursesallaroundtheworldwere celebrated for their tireless pursuit ofservice excellence.

Florence Nightingale, best remembered forher work during the Crimean War (1853-1856),fundamentally changed the role of nursing inhospitals and was a key figure in introducingprofessional nursing training standards.

Clicks Nursing Sister Kobie van der Merweagrees that much has changed since the 1800s.

“Historically, nurses were seen as attend-ants who prepared and administered medi-cines, cared for the physical needs of patientsand followed through on all doctor’s orders.

‘‘A great part of a nursing professional’s roleis still focused on providing wellness, comfortand care to patients, but this has evolved intoone of the most crucial support functions ofmodern medicine.’’

Nursing sisters have vast experience inmany nursing disciplines and can therefore of-feragreatvarietyof services fromimmunisingbabies to doing wound care. Even though theywork independently in some cases, they willalways rely on the knowledge of the pharma-cistwhen it comes to recommending theappro-priate medication or treatment. Nursing sis-ters and pharmacists are also ideal as a firstpoint of call before visiting a doctor.

Most clinics and nursing sisters areequipped to offer services for mom and baby, family planning, adult immunisations andwellness screenings. Some of the services formom and baby include; advice on sleeping, nu-trition and feeding, immunisations and devel-opmental information, advice on which sup-plements to take, what to expect during preg-nancy, how to take care of yourself, how toprepare for child birth and breast feeding.

“Prevention is always better than the cure, which is why it is important to go for regularwellness screenings at your local clinic,” saidKobie.

The types of wellness screenings includeblood pressure, BMI glucose and cholesteroltests. The clinics also offer breast examina-tions and HIV counselling and testing and arealso able to refer patients to appropriate facili-ties and support structures.

At selected Clicks clinics you can also getpapsmears, finger prick PSA tests for prostate, while all Clicks clinics offer specimen collec-tion for insurance purposes or as requested bya medical practitioner. As one of the preferredpartners for more than 50 medical schemes inSouth Africa, Clicks offers patients a great andmore affordable option for these screeningtests which are covered by most medicalschemes.Tomakeanappointment tovisityourlocal Clicks Clinic Sister, visitwww.clicks.co.za or call 0860 CLICKS/254 257.

New crèche helps children escape fire dangerAccording to reports at least15 000 children inSouthAfricasuffer fromburns-related inju-ries every year, with an aver-age of nine children dyingeach day from these injuries.

These shocking statisticsmake burns the leading causeof injury and death to youngchildren in the country.

Speaking ahead of NationalBurnsAwarenessWeek(6to12May) David Grier of the CiplaFoundation, affiliated to CiplaMedpro, South Africa’s thirdlargest pharmaceutical com-pany, said the figure tends torise during the winter months

in impoverished areas.“As the winter months ap-

proach, theuseof candles, par-affin stoves and open fires in-creases, along with the risk ofaccidental fires.

“According to reports, overthe last five years, there are onaverage 10 shack fires a day inthe country. South Africa’ssocio-economic challengescontribute greatly to the highincident rate of burns amongthose living in informal settle-ments, with the most vulnera-ble being children, as dwellingunits usually consist of highlyflammable substances such as

wood, card-board andplastic and arebuilt in closeproximity ofeach other.

“With limit-ed servicesand infra-structure, andminimal safe-ty controls inplace, impul-sive and fastspreadingflash fires are

a constant threat. Fire safetyis often compromised due tothe dwelling units that arebuilt in close proximity to oneanother. The units usuallyhave little or no access for fire-fighting teams or their equip-ment to gain entry to the fires. In addition to this, there is thelack of affordable safe energyappliances available to thecommunities,” said Grier.

To address the country’sgrowing shack-fire crisis inthese informal settlements, aswell as the related burns inju-ries, the Cipla Foundation haslaunched the Ajuga initiative– a project that will ultimatelysee fire-resistant structuresinstalled in informal settle-ments nationwide.

“By replacing crèches withfire-resistant structures, theAjugainitiativeensuresthat ifthere is a fire outbreak, chil-dren in the crècheswill be pro-tected. With this initiative, wecanalso provide childrenwitha place of safety and improvethe conditions in which theyare schooled.”

The first two Ajuga struc-tures, sponsored by the Cipla

Foundation, replaced crèchesin the informal settlement ofDu Noon in Cape Town earlierthis year. Currently threemore structures are being de-ployed in this area and anoth-er in Khayelitsha. Otherprojects have been rolled outin the Kwamashu settlementin KwaZulu-Natal.

Grier,whodesignedtheAju-ga structure, said that togeth-erwithOperationSmile,CiplaMedpro has for many yearsbeen involved in raising fundsfor corrective surgeries forchildren born with cleft lipsand palates.

“During the Cipla Miles forSmiles initiatives, we noticedthe rapid increase of childrenbeing admitted with seriousburn wounds and that is whenwe decided to investigate thecauses around this. When wesaw the shocking devastationcaused by shack fires, wecould not walk away. That iswhen the Ajuga project wasconceived.”

To get involved in the Ajugaproject, or to apply for an Aju-ga crèche, visit www.aju-ga.co.za for more information.

The Ajuga crèche is a fire-resistant structure, designed by David Grier,to help save children in informal settlements.

The fire-resistant crèche helps prevent the spread offires and contains the flames.
