Keep kids safe around waterThefestiveseasonand warmsum-mer weather are here – a timewhenkids lovenothingmorethanto spend time at the swimmingpool or beach.

Netcare 911 operations director,Peter Feurstein, says that tragicallyNetcare 911 is always called out to alarge number of incidents involvingchild drownings or near drowningsover the summer months. The sea, rivers, swimming pools

and even the home can pose a threatto the safety of small children, hesays.According to Netcare 911 medical

director, Dr Anchen Laubscher, drownings are one of the top causesof unnatural deaths among childrenin South Africa. She points out thatmost drownings and near-drown-ings occur around the home and in-volve children under the age of five.“Young children are extremely

vulnerablearoundwater.Babiescan

drown in just a few centimetres ofwater. It is therefore not only swim-ming pools and rivers that pose athreat to them but also potentiallybaths, toilets, water buckets andwashbasins.“A recent case involved a three-

year-old toddler who had a neardrowning experience in a shallowpond that was just a few centimetresdeep.“His parents found him face down

in the pond. Fortunately they gavehim life-saving CPR and he made afull recovery.”Laubscher advises parents to re-

moveor safeguardanywater aroundthe home that could potentially posea danger to children.

) Swimming pools and pondsshould be fenced off to ensure thatchildren do not have access to them.

) Pools and ponds should also becovered with safety nets.

) Young children should alwaysne closelymonitored as theywander

off and fall into swimming pools inthe blink of an eye.Even if they are good swimmers,

children should not be allowed toswim in the sea, a dam, a river or apool unsupervised.Shalen Ramduth, head of the Net-

care 911 School of Emergency andCritical Care (SECC), says it is ex-tremely empowering to be able to in-tervenewhen a loved one is vulnera-bleandurgesallparents to learn firstaid, particularlyCPR. In children, asin adults, when the heart has failed,CPR can keep the brain suppliedwith oxygen until an advanced lifesupport paramedic can take overtreatment. He says theSECCprovides avarie-

ty of accredited first aid and CPRtraining courses at various levels in-cluding CPR for family and friends. These are offered to schools, busi-

nesses, organisations, old age homesand any private individuals who areinterested in learning first aid.

Prepare for fire seasonWith all the fun that comes with thesummer sun, there are also someadded dangers during this season, which is very conducive to fires.Volunteer Wildfire Services,

which works under the authority ofSANParks and CapeNature, wouldlike to offer basic wildfire safety tipsfor the months ahead.

) If you are going into the moun-tains check the Fire Danger In-dex (FDI) available atwww.weather-sa.co.za.

)When hiking or walking alwayscarry at least 2l of water.

) If you spot a wildfire, make aplan, don’t panic.

) Phone for help, alert authoritiesto your presence.

) Never run uphill or up a slopefrom a wildfire.

) If possible, move sideways to-wards the flatter ground.

)Wildfires move with the wind,so move away and against the wind.

) Look for anything that couldhelp shield you from the fire’s heat.

) If caught in a wildfire, look fornatural breaks in vegetation such ascleared or rocky areas, depressionsor large bodies of water. Clear awayany vegetation you can before thefire arrives.

) Get into those areas, get low tothegroundandbreath throughanat-ural fabric.

) On a mountainside, the backside is safer. Avoid canyons (kloofs),natural “chimneys” and saddles.

) If a road is nearby, lie face downalong the road and cover yourselfwith a shield that will not melt orburn.

) Discardanynon-cottonclothingas this could catch fire or melt ontoyou.

) After the fire passes rememberdanger is not over. Burned trees fallwithout warning.

) After a fire, the burnt groundand debris is still hot and can burnyou.

) Never leave a campfire unat-

tended, always completely extin-guish the fire before sleeping or leav-ing.

)Make sure camp fires or braaisare a safe distance fromany flamma-ble material.

) Never braai or make camp firesin prohibited areas.

) Never throw cigarettes ormatches from a car window.

) Never make bonfires in windyconditions. The Western Cape government

provides the following tips for safetyin the home:

) Keep a well-maintained fire ex-tinguisher in your house, and knowhow to use it.

) If you have a garden hose, keepit rolledupandready incaseof a fire.

)Where possible, havemore thanone exit from your house.

) Have an escape plan, and makesure that thewhole familyknows theplan.

) Do not park in the way of a firehydrant (and remind your neigh-bours and visitors to do the same).Anyone can get involved with the

Volunteer Wildfire Services andhelp curb wildfires.Visitwww.vws.co.za for their next
