Steinberg San Jose Off ice
When Steinberg moved its San Jose offi ce to a more
prominent location downtown, the fi rm took the opportunity
to optimize its offi ce in response to trends in corporate
workplace design. The new space maximizes spontaneous
interactions and collaborative opportunities while increasing
effi ciency and general staff comfort.
To promote a sense of teamwork and collaboration, the entire
staff—including management and corporate accounting—is
seated in the open work space, organized by work groups and
around centralized amenities. To accommodate a variety of
work modes, other spaces range from large meeting areas for
collaborative engagement to small, private “phone booths” for
more private conversations. Shared amenities include an eat-
in kitchen for socializing and breaks, the “Idea Room” where
every vertical surface is writeable, and the high-tech “Media

Scape,” an open presentation area for in-person screen-
sharing to facilitate real-time collaboration.
Sustainability and staff wellbeing were key design drivers.
The ground fl oor suite already had large window walls, letting
light to penetrate deeply into the fl oor plate. Individual
workstations are space-effi cient, fl exible and height-
adjustable, allowing for user customization and comfort.

University of Southern California, Iovine & Young AcademyLOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
The USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business
of Innovation is a new academic program that will inspire innovative, entrepreneurial
thought in business, design, marketing and the arts. In year four of the program, the
student experience focuses on the Garage, the Academy’s collaborative creative space.
The Garage includes traditional and fl exible teaching spaces, conference spaces,
fabrication labs, student lounges, and outdoor spaces, which all support innovation
and collaboration. In a unique environment that enhances creation with advanced
design and prototyping technologies, students work together in teams. Throughout the
year, students collaborate with top faculty at USC and industry mentors selected from
among the leaders in each relevant fi eld or area. Garage teams are expected to create,
test, develop, and present completed projects.
USC’s strategic location in Los Angeles, widely viewed as the creative and media
capital of the world, provides an unrivaled opportunity for students to take
advantage of a living laboratory where music, fi lm and visual arts are deeply
intertwined. The Academy enrolled its fi rst class of 25 students in fall 2014.

Steinberg Los Angeles Off ice
When Steinberg moved to the PacMutual building in
Downtown Los Angeles in 2004, the space had gone through
multiple iterations as a stock trading fl oor, a ballroom, and
then a sound stage. The design team converted the space
into an open plan collaborative offi ce, restoring the original
arched windows and wood fl oors. The resulting renovation was
awarded a LEED-CI Silver rating for Commercial Interiors.
In 2015, we completed an upgrade to the creative offi ce space
that maximizes work stations and common storage in the
open offi ce to accommodate the growth of the company. The
design team also incorporated seven additional breakout and
touchdown spaces to encourage collaboration.

Shanghai OCT Block 4 Mixed-Use Development
This new development contains a mix of commercial offi ce
space and residential units. The site is bordered by two water
canals and a large landscaped berm and these unique edges
are refl ected in the project’s specifi c massing profi les. Along
the water’s edge, the project’s front, the massing is lowest and
least dense and becomes higher and denser along the back,
landscaped berm. Spacious public, pedestrian-oriented space
is created at the ground level of each building and an open,
landscaped square sits in the middle of the four buildings.
The master plan approach, creating an appearance of
randomness within a highly structured order, translates to a
variety of open spaces and building heights while creating a
consistent scale and mass across the entire block.
