INTRODUCTION

The Daniel May Papers, 1890-1982, are centered around Daniel May (1898-1982), industrialist and speaker, of Nashville, Tennessee whose father, Jacob May (1861-1946) founded the May Hosiery Mill in Nashville. The Daniel May Papers are a gift of the Daniel May Estate through the agency of Joseph L. May, Trustee. The materials in this collection measure 4.2 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single photocopies of unpublished writings in the Daniel May Papers may be made for purposes of scholarly research.

SCOPE AND CONTENT The Daniel May Papers, containing approximately 2200 items, cover the period 1890-1982, although the bulk of the papers are limited to the years 1945-1974. The collection is composed of accounts, associations – institutions, etc., clippings, correspondence, genealogical data, legal documents, photographs, special categories, speeches, and several miscellaneous items. Daniel May (1898-1982) was an active member of numerous Nashville area civic and educational organizations and served as a director or trustee for many of these associations. For example, he was a member of the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust during the eventful years when the trustees were occupied by such matters as the fraternity system in the 1950s, the student civil rights demonstrations of the 1960s, and the controversial issue of co-ed dormitories in the early 1970s. Correspondence, minutes, printed materials and other related organizational items may be found for the Vanderbilt University Board of Trustees as well as other associations’ policy making boards upon which Dan May actively participated. Clippings regarding Daniel May provide information about various speeches given, awards, and honors received, as well as other activities of his public life. Correspondence, which makes up about one half of the collection, has been arranged into incoming and outgoing sections. Many of the letters of Dan May’s brother, Mortimer May (1892-1974), supply valuable information relative to the operations of the May Hosiery Mill in the years following World War II, as well as the trading in stocks. In general, however, the letters are personal in nature and cover a wide range of topics. Prominent correspondents include Clifford Allen, Howard H. Baker, Jr., Beverly Briley, Bill Brock, Joe C. Carr, Winfield Dunn, Joseph W. Frazer, Richard Fulton, Albert Gore, Sr., Douglas Henry, Jr., Estes Kefauver, Kenneth McKellar, J. Carlton Loser, Richard M. Nixon, J. Percy Priest, Tom Stewart, and Ben West. Genealogical data consists of an unpublished illustrated history of “The May Family” by Dan May and edited by his nephew, Leon May. The family history is written in narrative style and is replete with anecdotes about various May family members. Photographs include several depicting various phases of hosiery production at the May Hosiery Mill. Special categories include the May Corporation, a family owned investment company, and the May Hosiery Mills (Wayne-Gossard Corp). Correspondence pertaining to these two business corporations will be found arranged under these two categories. Known for his ability to make humorous remarks on serious subjects, Dan May as a speaker was in frequent demand. The collection contains copies of twenty-six of his speeches including one of his more popular ones, “How to Create Poverty.”

Miscellaneous items in the collection are cards, certificates, court records, estate papers, insurance papers, invitations, legal documents, programs, promissory notes, sketches, taxes, and writings. By providing research information on a longtime twentieth century hosiery industry in Nashville as well as a prominent recent Nashville family, the Daniel May Papers have both economic and social history value. For additional information on Daniel May and the May Hosiery Mills, see the Daniel May Papers, Addition, 1914-1983, accession number THS 726, microfilm accession number 1546.
