INTRODUCTION This collection of materials relating to the Nashville public school system, 1854-1958, was compiled by J. Emerick Nagy. Nagy worked in the schools for thirty years (1928-1958) in several capacities: teacher; principal; Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds; and Director of Research and Statistics. He donated, organized and arranged the collection, which measure 24.4 linear feet. There are no restrictions on the materials. Single copies of unpublished may be made for purposes of scholarly research. There is an addition of 27 boxes to the Nagy Collection, 1723-1985.

In addition to the above materials, Dr. Nagy collected for his doctoral dissertation a great deal of material regarding Joshua Fenton Pearl who served as Superintendent of the Natchez Institute in Natchez, Mississippi (the first public school in Mississippi), from 1845 to 1848; as Superintendent of the Memphis Public Schools from 1853 to 1854; and as Nashville’s first Superintendent of Public Education from 1854 to1861. Included in this material is a copy of a journal kept by Pearl in 1879 just prior to his death while living in Belchertown, Massachusetts. Also there is a copy of a diary of Mrs. Pearl (Louisa Brown Pearl) kept while living in Nashville during the months from September 1, 1861, to March 22, 1862. Her husband had been exiled because of his Northern sympathies; and her daughters had already gone North. Her son, John, was in the Confederate army. During the war, Joshua Pearl was principal of a female seminary in Detroit, Michigan. Mrs. Pearl stayed in Nashville for some time trying to save a portion of their property and in order to be of help to her son if possible. It was during this period that she kept the diary.
