Stainless steel: the solution to resist aggression in exposed environments

The chemicals, oil and food processing industries have especially high requirements regarding hygiene and corrosion resistance. Stainless steel resists aggressive agents in humid, saline and acid environments.

How can the stainless steel grade be determined?By a composition comprising:

• A high nickel and chromium mix content;

• A molybdenum additive for enhanced protection against saline attacks.

How to choose the stainless steel grade?

Maintenance recommendationsTo be avoided

Metallic brushes and pads: risk of pitting corrosion if the equipment used is in ordinary steel. Pads and powders, because too abrasive: risk of scratches which attach dirt and tend to cause corrosion. Drilling in the workshop: risk of contamination of the stainless steel, damage to the tool, burrs, etc. Descale with hydrochloric acid. Disinfect with pure Javelle water.

To be preferred Gentle nylon sponges and brushes. Pressure jet cleaners at a distance of one metre. Rinsing in clean water and complete drying. To perform cutting out in stainless steel, use special

tools to avoid the risk of damaging the tools or contaminating the enclosure.

316L stainless steelRecommended in saline or chlorinated

environments for its very high corrosion

resistance due to the presence of molybdenum.

• Optimal intercrystalline corrosion

resistance.

• Optimal prevention of pitting corrosion.

• Especially suitable for environments

charged with acidity, chlorine (5% at 20°C),

bromine and saline halides or using very

corrosive additives and solvents.

304L stainless steelThe stainless steel most commonly used in

the food environment for its corrosion resistance

and its cleanability.

• Corrosion prevention (intercrystalline,

galvanic and granular) especially in

the presence of organic acids (acetic, vinyl).

• Resistance to the action of nitrous gases

in the presence of condensation water

and in most aggressive environments.

The surface condition plays an important role in combating bacteria. Less roughness means that fewer bacteria become incrusted. Less roughness means less bacteria, less adhesion of materials and an impeccable finish.

Scotch-Brite® brushingThe method used is a brushing technique defined

by the ASTM (American Society for Testing and

Materials) for perfect corrosion resistance.

Simple standard applications.

Protective paintingGreatest protection against attacks, external

pollution and metallic particle spatter.

• Provides ultimate corrosion protection.

Typical applications: marine, seaside,

off-shore.

Technical recommendations On the outer surfaces of the enclosure, avoid contact with ferrous materials (aluminium, zinc, steel) which could cause scratching and hence lead to rusting. It is possible to place stainless steel in contact with copper and nickel. Plastic washers between the cubicle and the lifting rings. On option: stainless steel screws and nuts, stainless steel locks and handles.

304L Non-aggressive food environment (cheese plant, slaughterhouse, etc.) Non-aggressive chemical environment (explosives, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, etc.)

Aggressive food environment (salted meat, mustard, white wine, etc.) Aggressive chemical environment (sulphur, boiling acids, sulphurous vapours, etc.) Marine environment (off-shore, seaside, etc.) Chlorinated atmosphere (water treatment, sewage plant, etc.)

Finish: a solution against aggressive environmental agents

Alkaline solutions: Cold solutions have practically no action, but the same is not true of concentrated and hot solutions.

Saline solutions: The behaviour is generally fairly good, except in the presence of certain salts such as chlorides; nitrates, on the contrary, promote passivation and improve resistance.

Food products: There is generally no problem of corrosion except with certain products which contain natural or added sulphurous components, such as mustard and white wines.

Organic products: They generally have no action on stainless steels, except if they are chlorinated. Glues, soaps, tars, petroleum products, etc. pose no problem.

Salts and other molten mineral products: Alkaline products corrode all stainless steels, but nitrates, cyanides, acetates etc. do not attack them. Most other salts and molten metals cause rapid damage.

Our recommendations in the presence of: Chlorides (salt in particular)

316L

Marine atmospheres 316L

Nitric acid 304L (316L if impurities

in the acid).

Sulphuric acid 316L (depends on the

concentration).

Phosphoric acid 304L/316L

(beware of impurities, and in particular hydrofluoric acid).

Acid sulphites (paper mills) 316L

Hydrochloric acid: Corrosion increases progressively with the concentration; stainless steel prohibited.

Organic acids: Acetic, oxalic, citric acids, etc. have practically no effect.

PacDrive P4 Robotics Solutions

Everything fi ts together: Robot mechanics,

servo systems, and the robotics library provide

a ready-to-use solution. In addition, complete

packages, including engineering, can accelerate

the integration of robotics into an application.

The P4 delta3 robot, featuring full stainless steel

construction, is designed for pick & place

applications. The software includes a

preprogrammed interface for integration of

the most commonly encountered vision solution.

The P4 can be equipped with an optional

rotational axis (P4s-R). The P4 robot arm is driven

by conventional motors with cabinet-mounted

servo drives (P4s-F or P4s-R) or by intelligent

servo modules with integrated control electronics

(P4i-F or P4i-R). Thanks to their IP 65 rated

washdown confi guration, the P4s-F and the

Robot control architecture

A safety protocol via sercos III enables

the complete integration of safe communication

into standard communication, without the need

for additional dedicated cabling or a safety bus.

Safety signals from data acquisition or

dialog devices are connected through safety

terminals or remote I/Os. A safety controller

on the sercos III ring permits programming

of the safety functions. Both standard safety

functions and safety functions enhanced in

accordance with PLCOpen Safety defi nitions

can be implemented with the integrated solution.

SoMachine Motion Workbench is a programming

tool for the engineering functions. In addition to

the program editor, it also contains tools to set

the safety device parameters for functional safety

components (drives, I/O components, etc.).

The Safe Logic Controller can be programmed

directly via the PacDrive controller, which

functions as a gateway.

Other classic designs based upon hardwired

safety components can of course also be
