Dear Members, Greetings! It is my pleasure to share with you through this edition of STAI e-Newsletter the As-sociation’s activities and developments taking place in the global sugar industry. The Indian industry ended the sugar season 2018-19 with a record sugar produc-tion of 33 MT against pro-duction of 32.5 MT in 2017-18. However domestic con-sumption remained stagnant at 26 MT leading to a huge carryover inventory of 14.5 MT. As every adversity comes with an opportunity, the same has come true for the Indian Sugar Industry as well. As per advanced esti-mates released by ISO, there will be global shortage of 5 MT in the coming sugar sea-son 2019-20, India stands a good chance to export the
some of surplus sugar with the assistance of the Central Govt which announced a subsidy of Rs.62.68 billion to export 6 MT of sugar. Ethanol Blending : The Central Govt. for the marketing year 2019-20, further hiked the price of ethanol made through C molasses f r om Rs . 43 .46/ l i t r e t o Rs.43.75/litre and ethanol made through B Molasses from Rs 52.43/litre to Rs 54.27/litre. In the marketing year 2019-20 the oil marketing companies are likely to purchase 2.6 billion litres of ethanol against 2.3 billion litres procured in 2018-19. This will assist the sugar mills to convert some of the excess sugar to etha-nol and maintain a balance in the season 2019-20 XXXI ISSCT Congress Comes to India: I have also pleasure in in-forming you that STAI success-fully bid to host the prestigious XXXI Congress of ISSCT in India in December 2022.
STAI also successfully organized its flagship event – 77th Annual Con-vention and Sugar Expo 2019 from 17-19 July 2019 at the state-of-the-art Biswa Bangla Convention Cen-tre, Kolkata. The event was at-tended by 750 delegates from India and abroad.
Wishing you a very happy and prosperous Diwali and a profit-able Sugar Crushing Season 2019-20. SANJAY AWASTHI
