The Letter of St. Paul to the Philippians has one of my favorite passages from the New Testament: “Though he was in the form of God, Jesus did not equate equality with God something to be grasped; rather he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him.” (2:6-9) This passage is important to me because it demonstrates the extent to which Jesus followed God’s plan, without regard for himself. Being the Son of God, Jesus could have taken the easy route when it came to his coming to earth. Instead, he did not cling to the honor due him and made himself low out of love for us. It is because of his great love for us that he gave himself completely.

We see a foreshadowing of the extent of this love and emptying of self in today’s Gospel. The leper, as we heard in the first reading, was required by law to remain apart, separated from the community and family. He could not touch another, nor could anyone touch him. When he comes to Jesus, he asks for healing. Jesus breaks the taboo by touching him to cure him, and “he was made clean.”

After the healing, Jesus tells him to keep it a secret, but the man goes about praising Jesus and telling his story. Because of this, “it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places.” (Mark 1:45) Prior to this healing, Jesus was the center of attention in the towns he visited, while the leper was banished to the margins. Afterwards, the cleansed leper is now in the center, on the inside, while Jesus is isolated, “outside in deserted places.”

As this Gospel passage notes, Christ took upon himself all of our hurts, our pains, our “unclean-ness.” He humbled himself to be the marginalized one, on the outside looking in. He did this because he wanted to make us whole, to allow us to truly recognize God’s love and mercy. Perhaps our prayer can be to recognize where we need Christ’s healing touch to be made whole, and give thanks to God for this great gift that we receive.

2018 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me”

2018 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me” This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, “Come, Follow Me” was selected to remind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Pro-Life Awareness Baby Bottle Project St. Vincent de Paul will participate in the Pro-Life Awareness Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Center of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, clothing and monetary provisions, prayer and other aid. Each year the three Chicagoland locations of The Women’s Center handle 5,000 appointments with expectant mothers.

Please take a Baby Bottle home with you, fill it with your spare change, and return it the week of February 11.

Each year, 1.3 million children are aborted in the United States. To put it into perspective, that is the equivalent of the student bodies of DePaul and Loyola being killed – every two weeks. Please continue to pray for a greater respect for life, especially among the most vulnerable. In addition, if you or someone you know has experienced abortion, there are resources to help the healing process. You can experience God’s love and mercy through contacting Project Rachel at 312-337-1962 or 888-456-HOPE. This free and confidential program can help with emotional, psychological and spiritual concerns.

Thank you for supporting The Women’s Center of Greater Chicagoland again this year!

ON BEING ALONE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER Copyright 2018 by John B. Reynolds ([email protected])

I heard something amazing on an early morning radio show recently. I didn’t catch the entire piece, and I haven’t thought much about it until now, as I consider today’s readings. Anyway, the radio host was wrapping up a story about loneliness, and I think I heard him say that being chronically alone is as detrimental to one’s heath as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. Not sure about the number, but even the concept is astounding, and something I’d never before considered. A Google search (“people dying of loneliness”) gets all sorts of hits, like this one from the NY Post: “Turns out American men aren't just dying lonely deaths—they're dying from loneliness itself.” That’s not good.

And it’s not just men, for a non-gender specific entry from a medical website has this to say on the subject: “In the last decade alone, physicians and researchers have begun looking deeply into the impact of loneliness and social isolation on health, well-being, and mortality, and the data on the subject is overwhelming: a lonely person is significantly more likely to suffer an early death than a non-lonely one.” And this, from the Huffington Post: “While it's difficult to explain the relationship between loneliness and death, it's important to empirically document this association…” Wow. Something’s going on, and it puts a whole new perspective on Garbo’s “I want to be alone,” you know?

Certain lyrics/poems have long spoken to me because they offer insight into the human condition. One such lyric was written by Kris Kristofferson and immortalized by Janice Joplin in Me and Bobby McGee: “Freedom is just another word for nothin’ left to lose.” Another was written by Steve Goodman in Song for David: “Weary, but weary is only a case/ Of being unwound at the wrong time and place.” And the first of two entries specific to loneliness was penned by the poet Kenneth Patchen in Lonesome Boy Blues: “Oh lonesome’s a bad place/ To get crowded into,” and the other, by Billy Joel in Piano Man: “They're sharing a drink they call loneliness/ But it's better than drinkin' alone.”

In Leviticus today we hear of the leper’s plight as God speaks to Moses and Aaron: “The one who bears the sore of leprosy shall keep his garments rent and his head bare…he shall cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’ As long as the sore is on him he shall declare himself unclean…He shall dwell apart, making his abode outside the camp.” In the Gospel, Jesus, moved with pity by a leper’s request, cures the man, telling him to show himself to the priests but to tell no one along the way. The man, of course, tells everyone along the way, making it tough for Jesus to enter towns openly. Instead, he remains “…outside in deserted places.” The lepers’ loneliness is externally-driven. Jesus’ loneliness is essentially internally driven, but he never turns the marginalized away. Or any of us, when we turn to him. So…speaking of loneliness in the context of song lyrics, John and Paul: “All the lonely people/ Where do they all come from?” (from any number of places and/or reasons). And, “All the lonely people/ Where do they all belong?” (in the comforting embrace of the Christ).

Celebration of the Sacraments at St. Vincent de Paul

Reconciliation: Saturday afternoon, 4:15-4:50 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room near the Sheffield entrance of the church, or you can call the Parish Center for an appointment.

Baptism: Please contact Mary Carter ([email protected]) to register for baptism preparation, which is held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. You may attend this class either before or after your child is born.

Following preparation and after your child is born, please contact Mary to schedule a baptism date. Baptisms are celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the month at 11:30 a.m., or during a regular Sunday mass. Baptism is not celebrated during the Lenten season.

Marriage: Please contact Mary Carter ([email protected]) to discuss the celebration of the sacrament of marriage here at St. Vincent’s, or concerning preparation and prenuptial matters if you are getting married in another parish.

For baptized Catholics, marriage is celebrated within a Catholic church in the presence of a priest or deacon. The first item to plan is the selection of a date and time. In order to celebrate the sacrament of marriage at St. Vincent, one needs to be a registered parishioner for four months prior to discussion of a date. DePaul University faculty, staff, students, and alumni may also celebrate their wedding here, provided either the bride, groom, or both are Roman Catholic, registered at a parish and actively engaged in the practice of their faith. Weddings are celebrated on Saturdays only, at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Weddings are not celebrated during the season of Lent, Holy Week or Saturdays that conflict with other parish events. Mary confirms all reservations for weddings.

Confirmation: Catholic adults who would like to receive the sacrament of Confirmation are invited to contact Rebecca at [email protected]. Confirmation preparation sessions are held Sunday evenings

February through May.

RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a program that prepares adults to receive the sacrament(s) of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. Preparation sessions are held on Sundays from 11:15 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and celebration of the sacraments occurs at the Easter Vigil mass. To learn more or to enroll in the RCIA program, please contact Rebecca at [email protected].

First Communion: Requires two years of classes. Family catechesis (classes for parents and children) religious education classes are held monthly. Please contact Rebecca at [email protected]/Religious Life: Please contact Fr. Jim Osendorf, CM, by phone at 1-800-depaul-1 or by

email at [email protected] to learn more about becoming a priest or religious.

Anointing of the Sick: To receive the sacrament of anointing of the sick, please contact the Parish Center.
