Archdiocesan Service Week: September 22-29, 2019

The 175th Year is coming to a close and to commemorate this event, there will be Parish events throughout the archdiocese. We are invited to participate in local service opportunities as an archdiocesan effort to reach out to oth-ers and highlight the Catholic Church’s presence in our communities. To kick off the event, we are going to col-lect care bundle packages that will benefit parishes and Catholic Charities. Boxes are located at all entrances along with individual shopping lists of items needed. On the weekend of Sept. 22 there will be a special blessing for those who are volunteering during the week of service. Thank you, Human Concerns

Stewardship Reflection August 25, 2019

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s readings show us that it is not enough to be Christ’s disciples in name only. To be a real disciple, we must live for Christ every day and in every aspect of life. This kind of life takes strength and discipline.

Intentionally and consistently offering the Lord the best of our Time, Talent, and Treasure through a stewardship way of life is a form of spiritual discipline. These spiritual disciplines teach us to become ever more aware of God’s constant provision for us and they keep us on the narrow path towards the Kingdom of Heaven. The more we embrace this way of life, the more we can be “trained” by the Lord in the ways of true discipleship. Though difficult, these disciplines become a source of spiritual strength.

Our Lord Himself speaks of the difficult path to the Kingdom of Heaven in today’s Gospel passage from Luke. He is asked, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” Jesus responds, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” Showing up for Mass on Sunday while living as if Christ is an afterthought the rest of the week does not make us disciples. What’s more, this approach to our faith is an unjust and unloving response to our good God who has given us all that we have and are.

Jesus does not want us to merely go through the motions of faith. He wants much more from us and for us. He wants to know us deeply and for us to get to know Him so that we become His holy disciples. This is not a burden; it is a privilege. But it does take discipline, the discipline of a stewardship way of life. Copyright © 2019 — Catholic Stewardship Consultants, Inc.

Religious Education registrations were mailed out already. If you are new to the parish or did not get a letter, please call the Religious Education office at 453-5344 X116.

Juniors in a Catholic high school who would like to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in Spring of 2020 need to come back to their parish for instruction. Please call the Religious Education office for the registration forms at 453-5344 X116

Monday, September 2 is Labor Day.

There will be no 6:25 am Mass at the East Church. The Parish Office will be closed .

School will be closed. Regular Parish Office hours will resume on September 3.

The first CHOIR rehearsal this year is on Thursday, September 5. We meet weekly at the West Church at 6:30pm and end at 8:00pm. If you love to sing and are interested in joining us, please see the director, Carrie Sanders after Mass, or speak to any choir

member. We’d love to have you join us!

School begins on Monday, August 26.

The Mass Schedule at the West Church will continue as usual. On Wednesday, August 28 and September 4, the school will have a prayer service that will fol-

low the 8:00am Mass.

About the Bible

· The Bible was written in three languages. Those languages are Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Most of our Old Testament was written in Hebrew, which was the language the original readers spoke. A few bits of the Old Testament were written in Aramaic. The New Testament was written in Greek, the commonly-spoken language of the time.

· The Bible was written by more than 40 traditional authors. The books of the Bible are traditionally attributed to heroes of the Jewish and Christian faith. Moses is given credit for the first five books of the Bible, most of the prophets are given credit for the books named after them, etc.

· The Bible was written by people from diverse occupational back-grounds. Parts of the Bible were written by kings. Half of the Psalms, a good chunk of Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes seem to be penned by royalty. But other parts of the Bible are written by farmers, fishermen, a tentmaker, homeless prophets, a doc-tor, a professional scribe, vocational musicians, pastors, etc.
