Images in the Word of God The f irs t image is found in Hebrews. We get a comparison of God as a fa ther who discipl ines h is chi ld . The t ime of the Letter to the Hebrews was a cul ture that subscr ibed to the o ld adage “Spare the rod and spoi l the chi ld.” What is im-por tant is the not ion of d iscipl ine. So le t’s set the scourge aside and take up the issue of d isci-p l ine - the discipl ine necessary to run a race, to “make s tra ight paths for your feet , that what is lame may not be disjo inted but healed.” Healing what is weak is the goal of th is d iscip l ine. The second image is Jesus as the gatekeeper who is te l l ing us that the gate into the k ingdom is a narrow one, so s tr ive to enter i t . Jesus isn’ t in to numbers and doesn’ t answer the quest ion asked. He s imply urges us to be s trong enough to get through the gate . And any claims of “You knew me years ago, Jesus” or “You knew my mother and grandmother” won’t matter . Fur ther-more, prepare to be surpr ised when you see who is get t ing through the gate in to the k ingdom. The bot tom l ine today: Str ive, d isc ip l ine yourself - feel ing ent i t led won’t get you in.

His father and our parishioner Gene Mullin, with whom I sat through part of the session both in the assembly and senate, gave me a guided tour of the Capitol. As you know, he was also assemblyman representing our district for six years. I learned that there are 80 assem-bly members in the assembly and 40 senators. All the 58 counties of California are given visual glass window presentations along the hallways. All in all, I realized how this great state of California works effectively through the legislative process of government. I came away with a great sense of satisfaction and patriotic pride. My congratulations to Kevin Mullin for carrying the spirit of St. Veronica and holding high our values of faith and excellence at the State Capitol! Since I had an extra 30 minutes, I took a brisk walk to the other dome across the street from the Capitol: the Catholic Cathedral of Sacramento diocese. It is an im-pressive church indeed. I was thinking that there are two domes: one of the Church and the other of the State. We are all called through faith and democratic values, through the preaching of the good news and serving the nation, to promote the common good of every human being. God bless the Church! God bless America! God bless California! A Quote to Ponder: “Nothing is more practical than finding God, that is, than falling in love in a quite abso-lute, final way. What you are in love with, what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you will do with your evenings, how you will spend your weekends, what you read, who you know, what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and grati-tude. Fall in love, stay in love and it will decide every-thing.”—Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., former Superior Gen-eral of the Society of Jesus. A Catholic Joke: Saints Dominic, Francis of Assisi, and Ignatius of Loyola are transported back in time and place to the birth of Our Lord. St. Dominic, seeing the Incarnation of the Word, is sent into ecstasy.

St. Francis, seeing God become a helpless child, is overcome with humility.

St. Ignatius of Loyola takes Mary and Joseph aside and asks: “Have you given any thought to the kid’s educa-tion?” Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Dear Parishioners, Capital Campaign Update: Phase I of pavement is nearly complete except for a couple of things. Tempo-rary lines will be painted, which will pave the way for us to move our Masses back to our church from the parish center and for the parking lot to be reopened. The finishing coat is scheduled to be done September 2nd. Kudos to Don & Terri Ciardella, Sharon Ooster-man, and Tammi Grigg for successfully steering the Pavement Phase I to completion. This has been a lot of work and planning. Now all of us need to turn our at-tention to Phase II of the pavement. When we have raised the money needed, we’ll get to it. If and when everyone participates, it would be a piece of cake. My Opening Prayer at the California State Assem-bly: On my 24th Ordination Anniversary, August 19th, coincidentally I was invited by our District 22 Assem-bly member and Assistant Speaker Pro Tempore Kevin Mullin to do the opening prayer at the California State Assembly in Sacramento. I gladly accepted this invita-tion. Mullin was the presiding officer of the session. As protocol required, I had to send in the prayer ahead of time for their approval. The following is the prayer I made: Let us Pray: God, the Source of All Goodness, Love, and Compassion, You have called us into being to live, love, and share our lives with others. You have inspired us to build up nations and communities of peace and justice for your glory and the dignity of every woman and man. As we heed your call to lead through deep humility and selfless service, empower us to ensure that everyone can cherish your universal blessings and that no one will be left behind. May the State of California and this nation under God be a beacon of hope and joy for people here and all over the world, especially for those who are in most need. Amen. It was an exciting day of civics lessons for me. I was very impressed with the way the legislature functions. The State Capitol building and the infrastructure for the legislature are awesome. Kevin Mullin did an ex-cellent job of presiding over the session. By the way, Kevin attended our parish school. When he has time, I’d like to invite him to come and speak to our school children about serving the nation through leadership.
