WE CENTER OURSELVES ON GOD

Welcome to a time of Sabbath, rest, and renewal

\December 10, 2017

Glade Matters

Shared moments of information and inspiration about our church family

Prelude “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” DIVINUM MYSTERIUM arr. Jeanne Cotter

*Processional Hymn “ Comfort, Comfort O My People” #101

*Call to Worship

L: Listen! The voice of God calls out across the ages.

P: We hear and respond. We rise up to worship God from the valleys, the

mountains and the plains.

L: Like a shepherd, God leads us and tenderly gathers us together. Comfort, com-

fort O my people, says God.

P: The grass withers and the flower fades; but the word of God will stand

forever!

Prayer of Invocation (Offered by all)

You are the giver of peace, O Lord, and you call to us from chaos into the quiet

center of your holy existence. You call to us from the inner chambers of our

hearts. We come in answer to your call. We come to pray, to praise, and to

hear, once more, of your love. Reveal your glory that we may see it--inform

and inspire us to seek your kingdom on earth in our time. Amen.

Lighting the Candle of Peace (Ken Wisner, Gwen Whitmore, Jeff Wisner))

L: Advent is the time of waiting and anticipation as we prepare to welcome Jesus

anew. Like a family prepares a home for the arrival of a baby, we prepare our

hearts for the arrival of God’s own Son.

P: John the Baptizer appeared in the wilderness proclaiming, “One who is

more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and

3

untie his sandals. I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with

the Holy Spirit.”

L: John prepared the way in the wilderness. We prepare the way in our hearts.

P: On this second Sunday of Advent, we rekindle the hope candle, and light the

peace candle. May this light shine to remind us that God is the peace and

love that can never be extinguished. Amen.

Lighting the Hope and Peace Candles

Congregational Response

Come quickly shalom, teach us how to prepare

for a gift that compels us with justice to care.

Our spirits are restless till sin and war cease.

One candle is lit for the reign of God’s peace.

Time With The Children

Scripture Readings Isaiah 40: 1-11; Mark 1: 1-8

Sharing our Joys and Concerns

Leader : The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us pray…

Silent Prayer

Prayer

The Prayer Jesus taught Us

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever. Amen.

The Second Mile Giving for November

The Religious Coalition for Emergency Needs is a Frederick

County non-profit that has been providing residents of

Frederick County with emergency financial assistance for over

30 years. The Religious Coalition is the primary provider of

emergency services on the basis of human needs, such as

shelter, food, medical & dental calls, as well as prescription medications. Coalition

networking programs also assist our neighbors in need to avoid eviction, prevent

utility cutoffs, as well as funding the eight food banks. The Coalition also manages

the Alan P. Linton, Jr. Emergency Shelter, which is the largest and only year-round

shelter for the homeless in Frederick.
