RCIA is underway in the ballroom on Tuesdays from 6:45 - 8:45 p.m. On Tuesday, we will study Catholic prayers and practices. Prayer is at the heart of Christian life. In the Church, we have corporate prayers, which are prayers we pray together as the body of Christ such as the Our Father, the Hail Mary, and the

Glory Be. We also have extemporaneous prayers, which are our personal prayers. Both forms of prayer are important to walking with our Lord. Our Saint of the Day will be St. Teresa of Avila, who said, "Prayer is nothing else than an intimate sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be

alone with God who loves us." We will also review the liturgical calendar, the seasons in the Church, and the colors, sights, smells and practices utilized by the Church to draw us closer to God.

Do you need any of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation & Holy Eucharist) or would you like to learn more about our wonderful, rich and deep Catholic faith? Then RCIA is for you. "RCIA" stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It's the process by which adults come into full communion with the Catholic Church by receiving their Sacraments of Initiation. It's free, childcare is provided, we have a lot of fun and we always have something good to eat. All you need to do is attend. We will see you there! If you have questions, feel free to email me at [email protected].

The Greatest Commandment “Love one another.” This is Christ’s command to us; it is the heart of the Christian Life. The command of love - caritas in Latin, agape in Greek -

can never be simply “live and let others be.” the command of love means actuall making room for others in your heart.

The sin of racism is the opposite of love. In committing the sin of racism, we are not loving others. Instead, we are placing others outside of our hearts - way outside. Which is why it is a sin. It is also why we need to fight racism, especially in our own hearts. It is a poison that infects our souls. So, the question each of us must ask ourselves each and every day is this: who have I placed outside of my heart? And then we need to repent by asking ourselves, how can I show them that I love them?

TIEMPO ORDINARIO- DOMINGO 25º “A”

Hermana Gertrudis Muñoz Mendieta I.C.A.S.

Help After Harvey: The Way Retreat Center, Helping Hands aid families who suffered substantial losses after hurricane

The Way Retreat Center and Helping Hands of Midland are partnering to help raise funds for more than 50 families whose children attend Bayside Intermediate School in League City, Texas. The principal of the school, Joey Thomas, and his wife, Irene, are former Midlanders, and parishioners at San Miguel Catholic Church. Many in Joey’s school family have lost everything. The campaign to help those affected by Harvey began with an anonymous Midland donation of $25,000, with a second donor promising an additional $30,000 in matching funds. Individual donations have thus far exceeded $4,400. Money raised will be used to purchase gift cards for the families, whose greatest needs are groceries, household supplies, children’s clothing and furniture. “Gift cards will give our people the opportunity to get exactly what they need when they need it,” Joey said. “Gift cards will provide them a choice when selecting clothes for their children. Also, right now, our economy is hurting and gift cards will put money directly back into our area businesses. Families will more than likely use the gift cards right away, which would in turn help put our hourly wage employees working again. The goal is to get folks on their feet and supporting themselves again, as soon as possible.” If the goal of $85,000 is raised, each of the affected families in the Bayside community of League City would receive approximately $1,500 in gift cards, a fraction of what each family needs to help restart their lives after Harvey. Another anonymous Midlander donated a vehicle to a husband and father that had lost two family vehicles due to Harvey’s floodwaters. If you have a car that you would like to donate, email [email protected]. To help, make your check to Helping Hands and write “League City/Hurricane Harvey” in the memo field, and send to Helping Hands, 1301 Brinson Lane, Midland, 79703.
