I mean, messages like: “share with those who don’t have enough,” and “take care of our brothers and sisters in Christ” really seem like easy tasks, don’t they? But why is it that throughout all history people can’t seem to get this right? Again, it seems like it’s not too extreme for us to do, but it requires big changes for us. We must be willing to not have as much as we want. We need to be willing to make changes in our lives that turns us outward instead of inward to those around us. It’s an easy change at first, but like most resolutions, when we find it requires us to make a life-long change, that’s way different. This is when the difficulty really sets in. For us to make any real change, we have to do it day in and day outcontinually. This is what God calls us to do, which makes sense. After all, if we are changed when we become believers, it makes sense that we would have had to change to become believers. No longer are the ways of the world going to be the predominant way of living. We need to become people of love and compassion as opposed to people of selfishness and self-preservation. This is the difficulty, but also the call of the Lord. This is how we bring the kingdom of God here to Earth. See you in the pews, Pastor Jeff

A Loving Church, Making a Difference in the World

Letter from the Pastor

January is here. A chance for a new start. A time to make resolutions and to recover

from all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. We have gotten here, and we know what the

next steps are—to make resolutions and stating how we’re going to be different in the new year.

Whether it’s losing weight, doing something different in life, or whatever else, a lot of people make

resolutions.

And if you’re anything like me, it’s not easy to keep them. We can make those resolutions

and say this is what we want to do, and then we begin. It goes well for a day or two, but then the

reality sets in—just how much work or discipline is required—and it gets much harder to do. Even

though it seems easy and good for us, it is often tough to make those changes.

This got me to thinking. I wonder if that’s why people in the Bible struggled so much. I mean,

messages like: “share with those who don’t have enough,” and “take care of our brothers and

sisters in Christ” really seem like easy tasks, don’t they? But why is it that throughout all history

people can’t seem to get this right? Again, it seems like it’s not too extreme for us to do, but it

requires big changes for us.

We must be willing to not have as much as we want. We need to be willing to make changes in our

lives that turns us outward instead of inward to those around us. It’s an easy change at first, but like

most resolutions, when we find it requires us to make a life-long change, that’s way different. This is

when the difficulty really sets in. For us to make any real change, we have to do it day in and day

out—continually.

This is what God calls us to do, which makes sense. After all, if we are changed when we

become believers, it makes sense that we would have had to change to become believers. No longer

are the ways of the world going to be the predominant way of living. We need to become people of

love and compassion as opposed to

people of selfishness and self-preservation.

This is the difficulty, but also the call of

the Lord. This is how we bring the

kingdom of God here to Earth.

See you in the pews,

Pastor Jeff

January Extra Step – God Cares Ministry— God Cares Ministry was incorporated in 2010 in an effort to help veterans find employment. This organization assists those in need to find temporary shelter, food, clothing, mentoring and employer contacts so they can best present themselves to prospective employers. Self-sufficiency is the goal and the ministry’s motto is: “Helping Others, Help

Themselves.” Veterans put careers on hold, families on hold, education on hold to perform this sacrifice for us. Unfortunately, in some cases, these veterans lost those things they were required to put on hold. God Cares is currently serving Missouri counties of Warren, Lincoln, Montgomery, St. Charles and Franklin. God Cares has no over-head so all donations go directly to helping individuals. Those who serve in this ministry are all volunteers. Visit them on the web: http://god-cares-ministry.org/

Top 10 Reasons to Give Blood

• You will get juice and cookies. The women’s guild will have sandwiches and

cookies for those who donate. They’re the best!

• It’s easy and convenient. It only takes about an hour to give blood.

• You will weigh less—one pint less than when you came in!

• It’s something you can spare. Most people have blood to spare, yet there is still

not enough to go around.

• No one can ask you to do heavy lifting. As long as your wear your bandage,

you’re on reprieve. Wear it as long as you like. It’s a badge of honor!

• You will walk a little taller afterward. Most people feel good about themselves

knowing they’ve just helped save someone’s life. You will too!

• You will be helping to ensure that blood is there when it’s needed. Most

people don’t think they’ll ever need blood, but many do. One whole blood donation

can yield up to three blood products: red cells, platelets, and plasma.

• You will give a gift that costs nothing, but lasts a lifetime. Blood is

something money can’t buy. It’s only something that one person can give to another.

• You will be someone’s hero. You may give a newborn, a child, a mother or

father, a brother or a sister another chance at life. In fact, you can help save up to

three lives with just one donation!

• It’s the right thing to do!

Please donate blood. It saves lives!

THE UNKNOWN

I do not know what still awaits,

Or what tomorrow brings;

But with the glad salute of faith,

I hail its open wings!

For this I know—that in my Lord

Shall all my needs be met;

And I can trust the heart of Him

Who has not tailed me yet.

~Author Unknown~

THE UNKNOWN FUTURE

Life is a book in volumes three—

The past, the present, and the yet-to-be.

The past is written and laid away,

The present we’re writing every day,

And the last and best of volumes three

Is locked from sight—God holds the key.

EPIPHANY TRIVIA • The Twelfth Night (Epiphany) also marks a visit to the baby Jesus by three Kings, or Wise Men. The word

'Epiphany' comes from Greek and means to show, referring to Jesus being revealed to the world.

• In the West, Christians began celebrating the Epiphany in the 4th century, associating it with the visit of the

Wise Men to Jesus.

• According to the Gospel of Matthew, the men found Jesus by following a star across the desert to Bethlehem.

• The three men - named Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar - followed the star of Bethlehem to meet the baby

Jesus. According to Matthew 2:11, they offered symbolic gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

• The gifts were symbolic of the importance of Jesus' birth, the gold representing his royal standing;

frankincense his divine birth; and myrrh his mortality.

• During the medieval period, Christmas was celebrated for the 12 days from Christmas Eve on December 24,

until the Epiphany. Even up until the 19th century, January 6 was as big a celebration as Christmas Day.

• For many Protestant churches, the season of Epiphany extends from January 6 until Ash Wednesday and the

start of Lent. The last Sunday of the Epiphany is celebrated as Transfiguration Sunday.

• Others, including the Catholic church, observe Epiphany as a single day. Some Catholic dioceses in the US

mark the Epiphany feast on the Sunday after January 6.
