TODAY’S GOSPEL Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother, John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him."

Matthew 17:1-9

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky

waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

Today’s reading offers three significant messages: the Transfiguration was a historical experience of visionary character. Only in the light of Jesus’s Resurrection can the meaning of this event be truly understood. When the disciples were frightened Jesus encouraged them not to be afraid.

The account of the Transfiguration confirmed for Matthew’s readers that Jesus was the Son of God and pointed to fulfillment of the prediction that he will come in his Father's glory at the end of the age. The voice from heaven repeated the baptismal proclamation about Jesus with the added mandate,

prediction that he will come in his Father's glory at the end of the age. The voice from heaven repeated the baptismal proclamation about Jesus with the added mandate, “Listen to him.” Peter, James and John formed the inner circle among the disciples and were also the ones taken aside by Jesus in Gethsemane. As such, Matthew was very interested in their reaction to this manifestation of God’s glory. The story tells us that Peter asked permission to erect three tents in the hope that they could remain with Jesus in this awesome place until the coming of the Kingdom. This was a natural human reaction after seeing some external changes in Jesus and experiencing a glimpse of his Lordship. Jesus shattered their hopes by commanding them to go down the mountain (back to reality) and to be unafraid. The presence of Moses and Elijah represented the Law and the prophets of the Old Testament. For Reflection: Am I the type of Catholic that always expects to be on the mountaintop enjoying visions of glory? What am I afraid of if I come down the mountain? Too much work? A change in my life? People’s expectations of me as a Christian?

CATHOLIC HUMOR 1. Visitor: Does your baby brother talk yet?

Freddy: He doesn’t have to. He gets everything he wants by yelling.

2. Wife: Scientists claim that the average person speaks 10,000 words a day. Husband: Yes, dear, but remember, you are far above average.

3. Whenever my wife needs money, she calls me handsome. She says, “Hand some over.”

LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTION BOOK 1. When asked to pray in public, be quick about it.

2. Be humble and polite, but don’t let anyone push you around.

3. Be advised that when negotiating, if you don’t get it in writing, you probably won’t get it.

IMPORTANT HEALTH SCREENINGS/EXÁMENES IMPORTANTES DE PREVENCIÓN Stroke Scan Plus will be here at St. Paul’s performing 8 ultrasound screenings on Friday and Saturday, November 3rd and 4th 2017.

Are you one of the many that have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, or you have family history of heart disease, stroke, or internal cancers? If so, absolutely do not miss this opportunity for early detection of a possible serious disease.

They will scan the arteries in the neck, the main artery off the heart, the thyroid, liver, kidneys, gallbladder, and the arteries in the legs.

These screenings are typically NOT performed at annual check-ups, nor will insurance companies pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Collectively, these screenings cost thousands. They will be offering these screenings to you for $155 for all 8 combined. You will also receive an Atrial Fibrillation screening. Insurance is NOT necessary to receive this discount. However, Pre-Registration IS necessary and appointments are limited. Please call 1- 866-935-7226 to schedule an appointment today.
