ST. PAUL ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH MANY CULTURES, MANY COUNTRIES, MANY LANGUAGES IN ONE BODY: ST. PAUL’S FAMILY

TODAY’S GOSPEL Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, "Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them.

STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE

“’Here I am!’ he answered.” - Genesis 22:11

It is easy to say, “Here I am, Lord,” when we are kneeling in church. But how easy is it to say “Here I am, Lord,” when a neighbor needs our help, when we are invited to join a parish ministry, or when we are asked to provide financial support? Often times we are called when it’s not convenient for us. Discipleship is not always easy, most of the time it will make us uncomfortable and vulnerable.

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

Thank you for your generosity!

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would

aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

The second Sunday of Lent always tells the story of the transfiguration of Jesus. This “glorious-epiphany” stands in contrast to the temptations that we read last Sunday. The temptations highlighted the humanity of Jesus, the Son of Man, who became like us even to the point of being tempted by the devil. The transfiguration reflects his divinity. Jesus is the Son of God who manifests his glory to three of his disciples. His appearance changed as it also did in his glorified body after the resurrection. Mark’s narrative follows the first of the three predictions of Jesus’ Passion, in which Jesus teaches his disciples that he will have to suffer greatly.

in his glorified body after the resurrection. Mark’s narrative follows the first of the three predictions of Jesus’ Passion, in which Jesus teaches his disciples that he will have to suffer greatly. Placing the story of the Transfiguration after his first Passion prediction reveals that, while Jesus is the Messiah, his triumph will come through his suffering and death. Peter wants to capture the moment by keeping Jesus, Moses and Elijah there with them. However, Mark does not allow his readers to linger on the mountaintop. Jesus knew, says Mark, that they would have difficulty accepting his suffering and death. Consequently, he tells them not to get too excited about the glory of the transfiguration event until after he has risen from the dead. For Reflection: Do I expect only moments of glory from God? Do I remain faithful when things are not going my way?

SERVE

“And today, it is the same Christ, the same Jesus, the same today in our poor people, who are unwanted, unemployed, uncared for, hungry and naked and homeless. They are useless to the state or to socitety, and nobody has time for them. And it is you and I as Christians who, worthy of that love of Christ, if our love is true, must find them. We must help them, they are there for the finding.”—Mother Teresa’s words.

LENTEN PRAYER Dear Lord Jesus, during these days of Lent, I want to fast, to repent and to pray. Above all else I want to stay in the circle of Your love. Walk with me and surround me with Your light; lead me and guide me in Your footsteps. Help me to follow You and imitate Your love. May this cross remind me today and throughout Lent of Your great love for me.

Amen.
