My dear family of St. Matthew!

Below is Dcn. Peter soon-to-be-Father Peter Infanger’s reflection on the priesthood. I asked both Dcn. Peter and Dcn. Senovio to share with you here in this bulletin a two-part reflection: the first installment would be a personal, historical version of their journey toward their vocation to the priesthood, and then in the second part a more general reflection on their understanding of the priesthood, its value for them, in other words, what does the Priesthood of Jesus mean for them. So it’s exciting for me to present to you this week the second part of Dcn. Peter’s reflections, with less than a month away from Ordination to the Priesthood! Dcn. Peter is one of seven “transitional Deacons” who will be ordained to the Priesthood at a livestreamed Ordination Mass in our Cathedral Church of St. Raymond Nonnatus in Joliet on June 20, 2020. You can find more information on our Diocese of Joliet website regarding this Ordination and the seven men being ordained to the priesthood (copy this: http://www.dioceseofjoliet.org/vocations/sectioncontent.php?secid=31, and then click on any picture of the men being ordained to learn more about any one of them). Please enjoy this opportunity below to reflect on the thoughts of Dcn. Peter as he is inspired by the priestly life of Jesus Who called him, together with his six spiritual deacon-brothers in the Lord, to the Priesthood at our Cathedral. God-willing, after their ordination, Dcn. Senovio soon-to-be-Father Senovio will be moving (July 1, 2020) into his new three-year priestly assignment at St. Mary Immaculate Parish, Plainfield, and Dcn. Peter will be moving “right up the street almost literally” to St. Walter Parish, Roselle, that same first day of July as well.

Please continue to carry in your prayerful heart our seven candidates preparing for their Ordination to the Ministerial Priesthood of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is alive and risen from the dead, Who ascended to the right hand of God our Father, and now gives us His risen life through the power of the Holy Spirit!

In the living, loving, giving and caring Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Rev. Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (630) 469-6300 ext. 312

Reflection on the priesthood by Deacon Peter Infanger In many ways my calling as priest and your calling as lay disciple are the same. We are all called by God to follow God’s way. We are all called to be a “holy nation, a holy priesthood, a people set apart (1 Peter 2:9-10) (the word used in the Bible for set apart is “holy”). Consecrated, made holy, people set apart – all of us! This is the call to the universal priesthood of the baptized.

However, since the beginning of time, God has set aside people to lead worship, make intercession and share God’s words with all people. Jesus did not leave us orphans (John 14:18) but sends holy men and women to help show us the way to God and Salvation. Priests are one type of holy men and women. My primary job is to get all the parish family and myself to heaven. To accomplish that I need to have a strong prayer life so that I can be a pathway to God. The magnitude of my challenge and everyone’s challenge is that when people see me and see anyone, they should see Jesus (John 14:9-14, Galatians 2:20). What I do and say should mirror Jesus. I and everyone else has a long way to go. In fact, humanly it is impossible. But with God’s help all things are possible. There are differences in the call to priesthood vs say the call to marriage. The priest is called to love multiple families and individuals, vs loving just one person or one family. Additionally, at ordination the new priest receives a special mark on their soul. (Everyone receives a special mark on their soul at baptism and confirmation.) You are a priest forever, even in the heavenly liturgy. We are changed in the sacraments like ordination, but we need to live into that change. We need to unpack this gift versus put it in a closet like many do after confirmation. Jesus died for us to receive this gift. How would you feel if you died for someone to give them a wonderful gift and then the other person left the gift in the closet? We must be formed. Formation never ends. For all of us. The day of your ordination or marriage does not make you a saint suddenly but challenge you to a personal decision to apply self to that ministry. Love is primarily a choice not a feeling. Mistakes happen. We are human. The only difference between a saint and a sinner is a saint gets back up (St Josemaria Escriva). A priest is called to leave all behind and put their mind on things above. The fact is we are all called to this (“pearl of great price” or “treasure in a field” (Matthew 13:44-46) “put your mind on things above” (Colossians 3:1-2). My favorite image for me as a Christian is from St Mother Teresa – Be a “pencil” in the hand of God. In addition to my thoughts on the priesthood I want to share with you the teaching of the Church that I learned in seminary.

Munera Christi (the offices or functions or works of Christ) – Prophet, Priest and King – Teach, Sanctify and Govern. From the earliest days of Christianity three primary roles have been identified for the priesthood – both the universal priesthood of all the baptized and the ministerial priesthood of the religious. This is based on the Old Testament and so go back thousands of years and is reflected in the priesthood of Jesus Christ.

St. Matthew Council of Catholic Women

Sisters in Christ

Greetings from St. Matthew CCW!

June 1 - the real beginning of summer! The warmer temps and the sunny blue skies will help to bolster our spirits.

Also helping to bolster our spirit, is the hope that we will begin to gather in very small numbers in God’s House.

Mean while we must continue to practice safe distancing, wear masks and shelter in. We Can Do This!

Thought for the Week — Serenity Prayer

Lord God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can;

and the wisdom to know the difference.

< — CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Teach/Preach is what Jesus did the most during his ministry on earth. Jesus the Word. The Word starts all sacraments. Priest gives voice to the word and teaches the faith. The priest is called to proclaim the good news. And it is truly good news! “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, and to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.” (Luke 4:16-22). Part of the job of the priest is to communicate that we are all, myself included, held captive in some way and in dire need of a savior. Jesus opened the gates of heaven to all who believe. Jesus is the way to most joy in this life and ultimate joy for eternity in heaven in next life (John 14:6). As a teacher we need to be a witness. “What the world needs to today’s is witness more than teachers and if a teacher that a witness” (Paul VI)

Sanctify – The charge to sanctify was given in the Great Commission right before Jesus’ Ascension (Mt 28:16-20). Jesus charged priests to sanctify at the last supper where he instituted the Eucharist (Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, 1 Corinthians). Jesus was made known in the breaking of the bread, (Luke 24:13-35). The priest is called to help us grow in holiness especially through the Sacraments. The priest offers right worship and the perfect sacrifice to God in the Mass. All cultures since human’s possessed reason have worshipped and offered sacrifice. In fact, this is one of the defining characteristics of humans vs animals. But we all sin (1 John if say we don’t sin, we are a liar(1 John 1:8). And so, Jesus also gave us the sacrament of reconciliation to bring us back in relationship with God. (John 20:23))

Govern – Although small at first, Jesus established an organization of 12 with Peter as the head. But God’s organization was not like earthly organizations. God’s organization is led by servant leaders made present in Jesus’ washing the feet of his disciples and then dying for us. Jesus came to serve not to be served (Matthew 20:28) We are called to be a humble servant. We are called to serve the poor, the struggling, all people. Priesthood and Marriage are “service” sacraments (CCC 1534). Priests and married couples forget this sometimes. Priests are called to lead prayer and worship offered for others, the parish! Priests are called to be a spiritual father modeling love and pastoral care. Jesus calls us to serve to the point of being willing to lay down our life. We all need to be willing to lay down our will and for a few to lay down our life (martyrs). Willing to give our life for the church is one reason for priestly celibacy. Christ and St Paul modeled celibacy (Mt 19:10-12 – Celibacy “for the sake of the Kingdom” and 1 Corinthians 7:7 “I wish everyone to be as I am”). Celibacy became a growing practice. By around the year 1000 in a partly as a reform move to prevent passing down of parishes and dioceses to family, celibacy was made mandatory in the Roman Catholic Church. Celibacy is also a sign of heaven (we do not marry or given in marriage in heaven (Matthew 22:30).

The Book of Hebrews – most comprehensive description of the new priesthood of Jesus. Jesus is the new high priest – holy, eternal, mediator between God and man, the perfect sacrifice (spotless lamb) and intercessor (seated at the right hand of the Father). The priesthood of Jesus Christ is built on the Old Testament. The goal and roles are the similar but lived out differently in sacrifice and self-gift, service over function, a way of being. Establishment of the 12 apostles led to establishment of Episkopos (or Bishops) and Presbyters (or priests) and Deacons as shown in the Acts of the Apostles and St Paul’s letters. Note, the priest is the bishop’s representative in the local church and serves under the Bishop with the diocese.

Please pray for me, “lest after having preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.” (1 Corinthians 9:27). I am praying for you. Deacon Peter Infanger

Some thoughts incorporated above in my reflection on the priesthood taken from University of St. Mary of the Lake (Mundelein) Seminary Class Fall 2019, “Theology of the Diocesan Priesthood,” by Fr Dennis Kasule based on Jean Galot Theology of the Priesthood, Jean-Pierre Torrell, A Priestly People: Baptismal Priesthood and Priestly Ministry, and David Bohr, The Diocesan Priest.
