Mass Intentions, Readings, Saints From the Heart by Fr. Jason Kern
This week I submit Dr. Scott Hahn, a biblical
scholar, Sunday reflections on the readings as my bulletin
column (Source: https://stpaulcenter.com/blog/do-not-be-
anxious-scott-hahn-reflects-on-the-8th-sunday-in-ordinary-
time)
We are by nature prone to be anxious and troubled about
many things.
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus confronts us with our most com-
mon fears. We are anxious mostly about how we will meet
our material needs—for food and drink; for clothing; for
security for tomorrow.
Yet in seeking security and comfort, we may unwittingly be
handing ourselves over to servitude to “mammon,” Jesus
warns. “Mammon” is an Aramaic word that refers to money
or possessions.
Jesus is not condemning wealth. Nor is he saying that we
shouldn’t work to earn our daily bread or to make provisions
for our future.
It is a question of priorities and goals. What are we living
for? Where is God in our lives?
Jesus insists that we need only to have faith in God and to
trust in his Providence.
The readings this Sunday pose a challenge to us. Do we real-
ly believe that God cares for us, that he alone can provide
for all our needs?
Do we believe that he loves us more than a mother loves the
infant at her breast, as God himself promises in this week’s
beautiful First Reading? Do we really trust that he is our
rock and salvation, as we sing in the Psalm?
Jesus calls us to an intense realism about our lives. For all
our worrying, none of us change the span of our days. None
of us has anything that we have not received as a gift from
God (see 1 Cor. 4:7).
St. Paul reminds us in the Epistle that when the Lord comes
he will disclose the purposes of every heart.
We cannot serve both God and mammon. We must choose
one or the other. Our faith cannot be partial. We must put
our confidence in him and not be shaken by anxiety.
Let us resolve today to seek his Kingdom and his holiness
before all else—confident that we are beloved sons and
daughters, and that our Father in heaven will never forsake
us.
Restore the Church—Build the Future The collection taken up at all Masses on Ash Wednesday is used to support the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Please be gener-ous in helping to rebuild the church in these former Soviet countries.
The Magnificat Lenten Companion is available at each church. There are daily reflections and ideas for penance. This is a great tool for increasing prayer dur-ing Lent.

What is the purpose of Lenten sacrifice and resolutions?
Why do we fast, abstain, and make sacrifices during Lent?
“...(I) started paying attention to my relationship with God, and realized that I literally would not survive without him. I learned that God is not a lifeline to be used as a last resort; he is, in fact, everything, whether things are going well or badly. One reason we fast and abstain and make sacrifices in Lent-in oth-er words, one reason we “do without”- is so that we can focus on the One we cannot do without.”
from A Lenten Pilgrimage by Archbishop J Peter Sartain
CRS Operation Rice Bowl incorporates all
three pillars of Lent:
prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
Operation Rice Bowl Prayer: We lift our prayers to you, God of Love, on behalf of our brothers and sisters in need. As we learn about their struggles, our almsgiving comes to their aid; our fasting unites us in their hunger. You call us to be dis-ciples for all nations. Bless us this Lenten season. Amen. Rice Bowl items are available at all churches.

Stewardship of Treasure
God’s generosity will never be
outdone by our own.
We Adore You O Christ and
We Praise You Beginning at 10:00 a.m. at St. Teresa on each of the six Sundays in Lent, Fr Kern will expose the Eucharist on the Altar
and begin a time of Adoration which will continue until 10:00 p.m.
Since we can never leave Our Lord alone, there will be sign up sheets available to make sure someone will always be present the entire time
that Jesus is exposed on the altar each Sunday. Please consider if you will be able to make that commitment and promise to Jesus to stay with Him awhile. Of course, anyone can come at any time during the day to
pray without being signed up.
