FROM THE PASTOR

August brings us 3 celebrations of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On August 5th, we have the memorial of the Dedication of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, one of the 4 major basilicas in Rome, which was built to honor Mary’s title “Theotokos” (“Mother of God”), proclaimed by the Council of Ephesus in 431. August 15th is the Solemnity of the Assumption, in which we give thanks for the mystery of the sinless Virgin’s being taken up into heaven, body and soul intact, at the end of her life in this world (see below for details on our Rosary that day). The octave of the Assumption, August 22nd, is the Memorial of the Queenship of Mary, which encourages us to meditate upon her great role as our intercessor, praying for us before God’s throne in heaven. As we make our way through this month, may we take advantage of these celebrations to call upon the prayers of Mary as the Mother of God’s Eternal Son, as the Mother of the Church, and as the Queen of Heaven and Earth. To Jesus through Mary! Yours in Christ, Fr. Eversole

THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD: AUGUST 6th

From the day Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, the Master “began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things...and be killed, and on the third day be raised.” Peter did not accept or understand this. So, Jesus took Peter, James and John to a high mountain. Jesus’ face and clothes became dazzling with light, and Moses and Elijah appeared, speaking “of his departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem.” A cloud covered him and a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to Him!”

For a moment, Jesus disclosed his divine glory, confirming Peter’s confession. Christ’s Passion is the will of the Father; the Son acts as God’s servant; the cloud indicates the presence of the Holy Spirit. “The whole Trinity appeared: the Father in the voice; the Son in the man; the Spirit in the shining cloud.”

ST. JOHN VIANNEY Feast Day, August 4th

St. John Vianney (Patron of priests) is universally known as the "Cure of Ars." Ordained a priest in 1815, he was made a parish priest of Ars, a remote French hamlet, where his reputation as a confessor and director of souls made him known throughout the Christian world. Please pray for all Priests!

Dear Lord, we pray that the Blessed Mother wrap her mantle around your priests and through her intercession strengthen them for their ministry.

We pray that Mary will guide your priests to follow her own words, “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5).

May your priests have the heart of St. Joseph, Mary’s most chaste spouse.

May the Blessed Mother’s own pierced heart inspire them to embrace all who suffer at the foot of the cross.

May your priests be holy, filled with the fire of your love seeking nothing but your greater glory and the salvation of souls. Amen.
