Celebrate With Us When? Sunday September 7, 2008 Where? Decatur Co. Fairgrounds Why? St. Mary Parish is celebrating 150 years

of its founding as a faith community!

St. Mary Parish had its humble beginnings about the same time that the railroad arrived in Greensburg, Indiana. It was 1853 when immigrants working on the railroad started to swell the ranks of Catholics living in the county to the point where trips by a visiting mission priest from St. Vincent’s Church in Shelby County, became more regular. The priest was Fr. Edward Martinovic and he was the priest who gave the Catholic community of Greensburg and Decatur County the vision of building a Church of proper worship. Thus sometime between 1855 to 1858 the first Church for the newly formed Catholic Parish of St. Mary, Greensburg was built. St. Mary’s was a mission to St. Vincent’s for several years and with the arrival of our fist resident pastor, Fr. John P. Gillig, the parish started thriving. By 1876, we had our first school built and staffed by the Sisters of St. Francis from Oldenburg, IN. By 1884 our present Church was built. Over the years St. Mary Parish of Greensburg has had a colorful history. The faith community here has endured the effects of wars, depressions, growth, prejudices and attacks on its mission and character. From its humble beginnings to our present day, we have endured with the countless commitment and support of so many faithful souls. With God’s help and the guiding protection of Our Blessed Mother Mary, we will be here for a long time into the future serving the growing needs of our parish family. So clear your calendar, take a trip down memory lane, and come celebrate 150 years of parish life at St. Mary Parish, Greensburg, IN. We will have Mass at the Decatur Co. Fairgrounds at 11 a.m. on Sunday September 7, 2008. There will be an old fashion Ice Cream Social following the Sunday liturgy and a balloon release with messages from our St. Mary’s children. We hope you will make plans to join in this historical celebration as we thank God for the past 150 years and ask His guidance for the future of St. Mary’s Parish here in Greensburg, Indiana. God bless you!

The Year of St. Paul 2008-2009

The Beginning of the Ministry

Jerusalem: The meeting with Peter “Three years later”, Saul went up to Jerusalem to get to know Kephas (from the word “Rock” in Greek), the name he always used for Peter - and “remained with him for fifteen days” (Gal. 1:18). It is certain that the latter taught him the oral tradition relating to Jesus, which Paul had not known (cf. 1 Cor. 11:23-35), as well as a Christological interpretation of the prophets, according to what the Master taught his disciples. His visit was discreet: the only other Apostle of the Church whom Paul met was “James the brother of the Lord” (Gal. 1:19). Paul was spiritually enriched through Mother-Church, but he could not integrate himself into it, most likely due to his past involvement as a zealot. He even escaped from an assassination attempt by the Hellenist Jews (cf. Acts 9:29-30). He was sent on his way to Tarsus, where again he took up his work as a tentmaker, and continued to proclaim his faith in the synagogue (cf. Acts 18:3). These were the years of his personal growth.

Dear Community,

I have received a Legacy for Our Mission report as of June 30, 2008. The report shows the amount pledged, received, written off and date of final payment. Pledged: $6,378,567.31; Received: $3,551,539.25; Write Off: $0.00; Balance Due: $2,827,028.06; Cash Overpayment: $4,664.82; Total Received: $3,556,204.07. We have about a million dollars at the Chancery Office, drawing interest, which we can use for building our new parish plant. We need a lot more if we are planning to build a church and school at the same time. If you haven’t made a pledge yet, please do so as soon as possible. Thank you for your generosity. At a recent meeting for collaboration in ministry, we received the following handout entitled: DO WE HAVE AS MUCH SENSE AS A GOOSE? I thought you might enjoy this article. I think the lesson is self-evident. This fall when you see geese heading south for the winter flying along in “V” formation, you might be interested in knowing what science has discovered about why they fly that way. It has been learned that as each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. (People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier, because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.) Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone, and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front. (If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed the same way we are going). When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point. (It pays to take turns doing hard jobs – with people or with geese flying south.) The geese honk form behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. (What do we say when we honk for behind?) Finally, (Now I want you to get this) when a goose gets sick, or is wounded by gun shot and falls out, two geese fall out of formation and follow him down to help and protect him. They stay with him until he is either able to fly or until he has died, and then they launch out on their own or with another formation to catch up with their group. (If we have the sense of a goose we will stand by each other like that.) Keep smiling, Msgr. Knueven

Volunteers from our Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist are greatly needed to distribute the Eucharist to our sick and shut-ins at the Nursing Homes. This is a much needed ministry as we reach out to those unable to join us for our Eucharistic celebrations each weekend. If you feel called to this special Ministry of the Sick, please call Joan at the office (663-8427).

Are you a “baby magnet”? Do young kids naturally flock to you? We are excited about our plans for a Catholic Mom’s

Group starting this fall. We are looking for a few kindhearted people who will be willing to provide childcare for our young

children in the basement of the office building while we meet upstairs. We will meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each

month during the school year for approximately 2 hours after Mass. If you can help, we would greatly appreciate it! Please

contact Nancy Fogg 663-5666 or Jill Wilmer 663-9824 if interested.

St. Mary’s Youthfest 2008…the Summer Whympics! Attention Parents! It’s that time of year again; when we start gearing up a night of fun and adventure as we watch our kids compete in the St. Mary’s Youthfest. This year’s theme is “2008 Summer Whympics…where ‘whymps’ rule” and will take place on Saturday, August 16th form 5:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. It’s a spin-off of the Olympics, which require much more strength and stamina than what we’re looking for. We need many volunteers to make this night happen for the kids (Jr. High & High School) of our parish. If you would like to volunteer to help, please call Kristy Lowe at 662-0401. Otherwise, she may call you! We also like to give away many prizes to the kids throughout the evening. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Larry Bishop at 663-3334. Thanks for your support!

Deb Greiwe, 3rd

My name is Deb Greiwe. I have been a catechist for many years – for both third grade and ninth grade. I have been blessed

to work with several great adults over the years and many great children. Being a catechist is not like teaching a class, it is

more like sharing your faith with others through stories, crafts, and songs. There are about 25 classes each year. Planning the activities for the week is made easy by the books we use, and you can add other things that you are comfortable with

(like gym nights, dressing up for particular occasions, etc.). Your personal faith stories make the book learning come alive for the students. It is great getting to know the young people in our parish – they are wonderful and each of them contributes

to the class in their own unique way. Each will cause your own faith to grow and change as you get to know them. Each is a wonderful, unique creation of God. It is a big time commitment, but when you choose to be come a catechist, your faith life

will never be the same!

Have you been reading these articles from our catechists? Is this a ministry you’d like to learn more about? We have several

opportunities this year for new involvement. Please call Anita at the parish office to learn more.
