Lent 2010 – “HOPE from the Cross”

Holy Thursday – April 1 Our Holy Thursday liturgy celebrates and remembers a love of sacrifice expressed in humble service to one another. Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper celebrates the institution of the Eucharist the priesthood and Christ’s command of service and charity for all who follow him. Arriving at this evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper please note the empty tabernacle and the extinguished sanctuary candle. This night, “we, the faithful, just as the priest himself is bond to do, will receive the Lord’s Body from hosts consecrated at the same Mass so that even by means of these signs Communion will stand out more clearly as participation in the sacrifice actually being celebrated.” The traditional “Washing of feet” will be done at the Holy Thursday celebration. We do this at Jesus’ command and as a sign that we are willing to serve one another. Every baptized person is called to serve.—this year, we have invited members of the Commissions working within the parish to have their feet (foot) washed. We ask that you do come prepared—Clean Feet, socks, footies, or knee hi hose for the ladies. (Also, we wash only one foot). Chairs will be placed in the center aisle. Please take your place on the chairs when arriving for mass. There will be no names on the chairs….you choose. Then after the Homily Msgr. Knueven, Father Lucas, Deacon Bernabe, Deacon Arthur will perform this ritual washing.—Your participation will allow us to make a “gift” of ourselves to you, our parish family. This Holy night is not about receiving but giving—a night of gratitude to God for His many gifts shared with each of us.

Good Friday Collection

On Good Friday, our parish will take up the annual collection for the Holy Land. We ask you to be generous. Your financial contribution will support the works of the Catholic Community in the Middle East and to protect the Holy Places and Christian Shrines. Be sure to check the Holy Week insert of this bulletin for all details of

Holy Week.

Ecumenical Service/Good Friday

Msgr. Knueven and Fr. Lucas will participate in the Good Friday Service at the First Christian Church, 425 N. Broadway, at 12:10. St. Mary’s Greensburg/Sunday Collections - 3/14/2010

Description Amount

Weekend Contributions $19,274.21 Capital Improvement Fund $74.00 Catholic Relief $1,240.00 Flower Donations $281.00 Total Sunday Collections $20,869.21

Thank you for your generous contributions. This week our actual

collections were $2,655.79 less than our budget of $23,525.00. “Each of us has been uniquely created in God’s image, so each of us must

find a different combination of elements to guide us along our path. The

parish community that takes the spiritual growth of its members seriously will recognize the need for a variety of processes available to people—at

varying times of the year and for varying life stages.”

“Presthood 101” Pope Benedict XVI has proclaimed this the “Year for Priest”! This Year is meant to benefit our priests, but it is also meant to benefit us, the laity. Our priests give their lives for us—their lives are literally spent in service to us. Therefore, a Year dedicated for them is also for us.

The Whole Church is a Priestly People Only Christ is the true priest. Yet through our baptism, we all share in His priesthood. There are 2 ways to participate in Christ’s priesthood:

• The common (or baptismal) priesthood of the faithful.

• The ministerial priesthood of bishops and priests. The ministerial priesthood is at the service of the common priesthood. Priests’ lives are literally spent in service to us. The Church states that the priest’s office “is in the strict sense of the term a service.” Priests exercise their service to us in 3 ways: by teaching, divine worship, & pastoral governance. The ministerial priesthood is one way Christ builds up and leads His Church … thus every priest is a GIFT to us from God!

Dear Community, The Men’s CRHP will meet in the conference room at 7:00 p.m. Monday. Bishop Paul Etienne will be officiating at the Chrism Mass on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral. You remember Bishop Etienne was a priest in our Archdiocese and pastor of St. Paul’s in Tell City before the Pope made him the bishop of Cheyenne in Wyoming. His diocese is the whole state of Wyoming. Our Archbishop Daniel Buechlein has a tumor in his stomach and is scheduled for surgery this coming week after Easter. Say a prayer for him. At this writing it is presumed to be not malignant. Be sure to come to the Seder Supper on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. There is no religious education that night. Mass on Holy Thursday will be at 7:00 p.m. School is in session on Good Friday because of the days missed because of snow days. We have two Good Friday services; one at 2:00 p.m. and one at 7:00 p.m. Fr. Lucas and I will be participating in the Good Friday service at the First Christian Church at 12:10. Please come join this ecumenical service. It is poorly attended in the past by our parishioners. I have been disappointed in our lack of ecumenical spirit. Please join us in this service. You will have plenty of time to participate in our 2:00 service. The Easter Vigil service with Mass and the lighting of the Easter fire will start at 8:00 p.m. Please join us as we receive new members into our parish. They have been preparing since last August. Masses on Easter Sunday will be at 6:30, 8:00, 10:00 and 11:30. All Masses will be in the church. Fr. Lucas will also say Mass at St. Dennis at 10:00 a.m. Jesus, triumphant entry into Jerusalem has many historical parallels in which public acclaim precedes tragedy and violence. We remember August 28, 1963, when 250,000 Americans arrived in Washington, where they heard a man named King proclaim, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’” Yet just months later, President John F. Kennedy was dead, and within five years Martin Luther King Jr. had also been killed. Even as he was entering the city to shouts of “Hosanna,” Jesus had less than a week to live.

Keep smiling, Msgr. Knueven

TRIDUUM

Come Celebrate The Spirit of the “TRIDUUM”

TRIDUUM – The Three Days

What is it ??

The Triduum is central in the life of Catholics.

The Triduum is severeal distinct moments within

ONE three-day celebration of the paschal mystery.

On the evening of Holy Thursday we enter into the “Three Days” that are the center of our year:

The Easter Triduum

A Three-Day Liturgy

HOLY THURSDAY – The Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper

is the beginning of this three-day celebration.

Key focus: Love of others

GOOD FRIDAY -The liturgy begins simply and consists of three main parts:

1) Liturgy of the Word/Reading of the Passion

2) Veneration of the Cross

3) and Communion (sharing the body of the Lord

from the Holy Thursday Mass.)

EASTER VIGIL – The night of nights, the primary celebration of the

resurrection of the Lord

1) Liturgy of the Light 2) Liturgy of the Word 3) Liturgy of Baptism 4) Liturgy of the Eucharist

Begin plans NOW to celebrate with your Parish family

the three greatest days of the Church year.

Following the Easter Vigil you are invited to a reception in the

School gym to welcome the newest members of our parish family.

Palm Sunday/Luke 19:28-40~~Isaiah 50:4-7~~Philippians 2:6-11~~Luke 22:14—23:56

HOLY WEEK SERVICES

PALM SUNDAY – March 28 – This Sunday commemorates the beginning of the last days of Jesus’ life. The palms we wave joyfully today are later burned. The ashes will be used next Lent to begin the season of penance.

CHRISM MASS – Tuesday, March 30 – will be held at the Cathedral in Indianapolis at 7:00 p.m. During this mass, holy oils are blessed by the bishop and are used during the year for anointing the sick, baptism and confirmation. Priests recommit their vows at this mass. Everyone is welcome. People representing each parish in the diocese are present to receive the oils and take them back to their parish.

SPY WEDNESDAY – March 31 – this is the day on which, according to tradition, Judas plotted to betray Jesus.

SEDER SUPPER – March 31 – St. Mary’s Gym (6:30 p.m.) Seder Supper (also called the Passover Meal). This meal is what has evolved into our present Mass and is similar to the Last Supper Christ celebrated with his apostles. It is a celebration of God’s leading the Jews from slavery in Egypt (the Exodus) and a time for fellowship.

The Triduum (Latin for “three days”) our most holy days are: Day 1: Holy Thursday, the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The beginning of this three-day

celebration.

Day 2: Good Friday, celebration of the Lords Passion/Veneration of the Cross.

Day 3: Holy Saturday, the night of nights. The primary celebration of the resurrection of the

Lord.

HOLY THURSDAY – April 1 – Mass is celebrated ONLY AT 7:00 P.M. This is the day of Evening Mass of the Last Supper. The emphasis of the Mass is upon Jesus’ example to serve one another. Jesus calls us to be servants. Through the beautiful ceremony of the Washing of the Feet we give witness to Christ’s command to “Love one another.” This is the beginning of our Eucharist and of Priesthood. The oils that we received at the Chrism Mass are presented to the parish on this evening. The holy oils are brought to the alter with an explanation of each (Oil of sick, Oil of Catechumen, Holy Chrism-baptism, confirmation, ordination). Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the 7:00 p.m. mass until 11:00 p.m. The Body of Christ will be carried in procession with the final place of exposition in the sanctuary area. You are invited to leave the body of the church and come into the sanctuary to spend some quiet time with our Lord.

GOOD FRIDAY – April 2 – Services are at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. We gather quietly and listen to the reading of the passion from the Gospel of St. John. We pray for all the world’s needs. The cross is held up in our midst and we come forward for veneration. (Kiss the wood of the cross) This is followed by Communion.

HOLY SATURDAY – April 3 – Night of all nights, the Easter Vigil begins at 8:00 p.m. This first mass of the Resurrection contrasts light and darkness, death and life. These ideals are made clearer by the New Fire, lighting of the Easter Candle, blessing of the baptismal water, and receiving into our faith those who have been taking instructions in the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). This is the height of Holy Week and the climax of Lent.

A reception in the St. Mary’s gym follows the service for the new Catholics. Holy Saturday Easter Vigil is an Easter

Sunday Mass.

EASTER SUNDAY – April 4 – Masses will be celebrated at 6:30, 8:00, 10:00, 11:30 a.m. in church. New life and fresh hope have come in the risen Christ. We celebrate with a renewal of baptismal promises to reject sin and evil, to love God and follow Jesus.

“This is the day the Lord has made. Let us be glad and rejoice. ALLELUIA.”
