Parish Mission Statement
Our Parish Family, under the influence of the Gospel, strives to be bold and fearless disciples of Jesus Christ. We witness to our Catholic
faith by living the Eucharist. We are the hands and feet of Christ in our service and in our joyful proclamation of the goodness of God.

Joyful News
Continued from last week…..
I arrived in Japan on September 21, 1991.
Finally, I was in my mission. After years of
preparation, of hoping and waiting, I was
there. I had no idea what the future would
look like, but I was ready for the challenge.
I had been there to visit a friend of mine a
few years previously, so it wasn’t my first
time. But this time it was for good. I wasn’t even sure who was
picking me up at the airport. And so the adventure began. Another
PIME priest, Fr. Giorgio, from Italy, arrived two days later. We would
be studying the Japanese language together for the next two years. The
PIME Headquarters in Japan was in Fuchu, a city about 20 minutes
from Tokyo. We lived in a parish and always had contact with the
parishioners, which helped us to practice our new language.
I had spent six months in Italy and had learned the language quickly.
Asian languages are much more difficult. A whole new alphabet and,
more importantly, a new way of thinking about how to speak. School
was five days a week for two years, in the high rise area of Tokyo
called Shinjuku. Each day after school, we would try out a new place
for lunch. Luckily they have pictures of all the menu items so we could
point to what we wanted.
Even after those two years, I could barely make myself understood.
My first homily was about 4 minutes long; someone in the parish
corrected it for me; I’m sure that no one understood what I said, but at
last they smiled. They were so patient. That Fall, I was assigned as
associate pastor to the Parish in Yamato, about 30 miles west of Tokyo.
The pastor was also a PIME priest. (In Japan, although the churches are
all named after saints, they are usually referred to as the name of the
neighbor hood or city where they are located). For the next two years I
struggled through homilies and trying to make myself understood.
There was a Filipino Community in the parish, so I was able to celebrate Mass in English for them.

We are looking for children
to join us on Mondays for
Faith Formation. Sessions
begin at 6:00 pm and
conclude at 7:15 pm. Choir practice follows
till 8:00 pm. Registration Forms and
calendars will be available next weekend.
Look for yours or take a blank envelope.
Faith Formation begins on Sept. 12 this
year.
We are also looking for Catechist Aides
and Substitutes. Please let me know of your
interest in this rewarding ministry.
We are looking for children to join us
for the Liturgy of the Word during Sunday
Mass. If your children are invited to
participate, please encourage them to join
the parade. This will take place after the
Opening Prayer. The children return to you
at the Offertory. We do exactly what
happens in church only on a child’s level. If
you are interested in training for this
rewarding ministry please let me know. If
we get enough interested adults and teens
we will have a good rotation going and will be
able to offer it at the 10:00 and the Noon
Masses.
We are looking for children who need to
prepare to celebrate sacraments this year.
Penance or Reconciliation will be
celebrated in November. Eucharist will be
celebrated in April and (we hope)
Confirmation will be celebrated in May.
The Bottom Line An attorney died and went to heaven. As he approached the
Pearly Gates, he noticed an orchestra
playing and thousands of angels cheering.
St. Peter himself rushed over to shake the
lawyer’s hand. “This is quite a reception,”
marveled the new arrival. “You’re very
special,” St. Peter explained. “We’ve never
had anyone live to be 130 before.” The
attorney was puzzled. “But I’m only 65.”
St. Peter thought for a moment. “Oh,” he
said, “we must have added up your billing
hours.” Sr. Gemma Legel, OSF

Fr. Ken (Continued from pg. 1)
Although I was probably not prepared for it, after two years I was named pastor of the parish in Atsugi, about 10 miles west of Yamato. I was excit-ed; I already knew some of the parishioners, especially some of the young
people. I remained in Atsugi for six and a half years, and my heart is still there. God’s graces worked overtime. When the bishop of Yokohama asked me to transfer to the parish in Futamaagawa, I was torn; it was one of the
biggest parishes in the diocese, in the city of Yokohama, but that meant having to leave the parish and city I loved. Never one to back down from a challenge, I moved to Futamatagawa, a neighborhood in the city of Yoko-hama famous because the drivers license bureau is located there. The church was a short 5-minute walk from the train station, and a ten minutes train ride to downtown Yokohama. Yokohama is a city of four million peo-ple, with a well-known Chinatown. It is a port city and, unlike Tokyo and other large Japanese cities, has had the influence of foreigners for hundreds of years. Next week….my call back to the States. God Bless, Fr. Ken, PIME

The Jubilee Year of Mercy With Pope Francis
God’s Ears
The saints are like God’s ears—one for each need of his people. We, too, can be saints in a sense. We, too, can be God’s ears for our fam-ilies, in our neighborhoods, where we move about, and where we work. We, too, can be people who listen to the needs of others, not merely to commiserate with them or to go and tell others, but rather
to gather together all these needs and present them to the Lord in prayer. -Homily, Feast of San Cayetano, August 7, 2006
Reflection: How is listening an act of mercy? It is a sacrifice of our time, our de-sires, and our preferences. Be merciful this week by truly listening to others and presenting their needs to God in prayer

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS of the EUCHARIST
Here are some guidelines from the Archdiocese of Detroit concerning Extraordinary
ministers of the Eucharist to the homebound, nursing homes, etc.
Ideally, the ministers to the sick are sent forth from the Sunday liturgy (or weekday
liturgy) so that those who are cannot be physically present at the community celebration
may be united in the Lord with the community. The ministers should receive the hosts for
distribution to the sick in a pyx at the time that they themselves receive Holy
Communion. They should not wait until after Mass to place the hosts in the pyx. Before
the ministers receive Communion themselves, they should hold out the open pyx, say how
many hosts are needed, and wait until that many are placed in the pyx. Then they should
close the pyx and receive Communion themselves.
The ministers should go directly to the homebound. It is not appropriate to go to
breakfast, shopping or elsewhere along the way.
The Blessed Sacrament may NOT be kept in one’s private possession, either on one’s
person or in a fixed place, except when in transit to bring Communion to someone.
The extraordinary minister should consume unused hosts. Should there be a large number
of hosts remaining, they should be returned promptly to the church and placed in the
tabernacle. Care should be taken at the next visit to limit the amount of Eucharist being
brought.
