This is the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord Jesus. This Feast brings Christmas to its’ conclusion. Next Sunday we begin again the Ordinary Time in the liturgical cycles. The Feast of the Baptism of our Lord Jesus reminds us of our own baptism. The baptism of Jesus is different. He was not baptized to be cleansed from his sins. He is the sinless one and the beloved Son of God. Jesus was there before time began. He created everything in the world.
What is the meaning of his baptism? Christmas taught us one thing; that Jesus the timeless one entered in time and history. In order to be part of time he needs to take the nature which belongs to time. He became Man and dwelt among us. The Bible says also that he assumed our nature in order to save human beings from the rupture which was caused by our first parents. The rupture was that they disobeyed God and broke the Commandments which were given to them by God for their salvation.
In the Gospel of today we hear also of John the Baptist. He was talked about a lot during the Advent Sundays. Many believed that he might be the Messiah. He contin-ued to deny their claims. He was pointing to one who will baptize them with water and Holy Spirit. The baptism of John did not do anything other than an external sym-bol of the conversion of the people. It was only a sign pointing to their intention to change their lives. As part of the humanity, Jesus also went to John to be baptized. The Gospel is taken from St. Luke the Evangelist. Luke places Jesus in prayer. Jesus is always praying before his ministry. The Gospel says, “After all the people had been baptized and Jesus had been baptized.” The Gospel men-tions here that Jesus was praying. Luke writes while he was praying, “Heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in a bodily form like a dove.” Luke also mentions that a voice came from heaven and it said, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” These things happened for us. The evangelist is writing it down in specific details for the sake of each one of us. We are the baptized children of God. Our baptism made us sharers in the divine nature of God. This is the reason we always recite in the Mass the “Our Father.” This prayer makes us children of God. We form a great family of God.
It is very sad today that many people who were bap-tized no more belong to the family to which they were originally belonged. The adults who lost the practice of faith give up the Church which once they called “Their Mother.” They give up God whom they called Father. How can a family survive without a father and mother? This is the main problem that mankind faces. The world is in complete darkness. Many of us do not realize that we are in darkness. We have not seen the face of God for a long time. If we have forgotten the face of God, how can we know what is light? The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord invites again to turn to him. By turning to him, let us hear once again the voice of God, “This is my beloved Son, listen to him.” How can we listen to the Church, if we have stopped listening to Jesus? Fr. JohnFr. JohnFr.
