Thomas Hopko and Alexis Cordone formally announce their Wedding

Thomas Hopko, Fr. John and Macrina’s oldest son, and his long-time friend and now wife-to-be, Alexis Cordone, have

now formally announced their wedding. Alexis and Thomas will be married at All Saints Orthodox Church, Hartford, on

Sunday, May 14, with the service beginning at 2:00 PM. Priest James Parnell, Pastor of All Saints Church, will preside.

(Earlier this year, Thomas Hopko transferred his parish membership to All Saints Orthodox Church, Hartford, where he

is now a pledging and participating member.)

Thomas and Alexis regret that it is not possible for practical reasons to invite everyone from their home churches here in

Terryville to participate in the formal reception that will follow their wedding. However, they do want everyone here at

Saints Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church, Terryville, to know that they are certainly welcome to attend the actual

wedding ceremony at All Saints Orthodox Church, Hartford, on Sunday afternoon, May 14, beginning at 2:00 PM.

Following marriage, Thomas and Alexis will live in Farmington, and will continue to pursue the employment and

educational paths that they are presently following. May God bless Thomas and Alexis, together will all the members of

their families, and their loved ones.

News and Notes

A Note from Maria Oraschewsky: “My family and I wish to thank our Church family for all the cards, memorial

donations, prayers, and expressions of love and sympathy extended to us following the recent passing of my

husband, Roland. You warmed our hearts in our time of sorrow. Thank you. With love, Maria, Peter and Family.”

Greetings from the Gorbachevs: Recently Maria Oraschewsky had the opportunity to communicate with our

friends and former parishioners, Ivan and Nina Gorbachev, via video conferencing (“Skype”). From their home in

Russia, Nina and Ivan send their love and greetings to all their friends here at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church.

Archpriest Vladimir Sovyrda – Memory Eternal!: This coming week, on Wednesday, April 5, we will mark the

30th anniversary of repose of Archpriest Vladimir Sovyrda. Fr. Vladimir is the husband of Matushka Ann Sovyrda

and the father of Deb Wegh and her siblings, Daria, Larissa, Mark and Marina. Fr. Vladimir died on Sunday, April

5, 1987, which that year was (as is April 2 this year) the last Sunday in Great Lent. Please keep Fr. Vladimir in

your prayers this week. Memory Eternal!

An Answer to Prayer: For some time now we have be praying for Nicole, a young mother suffering with

leukemia, who is an acquaintance of Tom and Marie Wood. We are happy to be able to report that Nicole’s health

is much improved and prospects for her future well-being are hopeful. We are asked to continue praying for

Nicole, and we are grateful to be able to give a good report on her progress.

Arts and Crafts Event at the Morris Public Library: On Saturday, April 8, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at the

Morris Public Library, where our fellow parishioner Elena Granoth works, there will be a Russian Arts and Crafts

Event. Artist Marina Forbes (www.MarinaForbes.com) will lead a Storytelling and Hands-On Matryoshka Nested

Doll Painting Workshop. Adults, teens, and families with children 6 and up are invited to learn about Russian

crafts, culture, and painting techniques and to produce a finished piece of Russian folk art on wood. There is a cost

involved (for art materials) and pre-registration is required. For further information please call the Morris Public

Library at 860-567-7440 or visit their website at www.morrispubliclibrary.net.

Pertaining to Pascha

Volunteers Required: We need a volunteer (or volunteers) to come to the Church early in Holy Week (Monday or

Tuesday) to iron all the black and white covers for use in the Church later in the week for Holy Thursday, Friday,

Saturday and Holy Pascha. [We have one volunteer, already. We could use a second!]

Paschal Appeals: Please give generously to our Parish’s General Paschal Appeal and to the Easter (Paschal)

Flower Offering. We always have lovely flowers in the Church for Pascha and our contributions help cover the

cost of these beautiful additions to our Paschal worship. Your support of these two appeals is deeply appreciated.

Blessing of Paschal Baskets: The Blessing of Paschal Baskets will take place at the conclusion of the Paschal

Midnight Services in the Church Basement Social Hall, after which time the Parish Paschal “Agape” Meal will

take place in the same location.

Paschal Agape Meal: The Parish Paschal “Agape” Meal, which will happen after the Paschal Midnight Divine

Liturgy, will take place in the Church Basement Social Hall, immediately following the Blessing of the Paschal

Baskets. We will not have a general food table, but will be eating from and sharing the contents of our family

Paschal Baskets, while enjoying each other’s company. If you are planning to stay for this meal, please bring

everything you need with you—your own plates, cups and cutlery, your own beverages and condiments, etc. (P.S.

The word “agape,” pronounced “ah-GAH-pay,” means “love” in the Greek language and is the traditional word

used to describe this Paschal meal.)

Thomas Sunday Blessing of Graves: On Sunday, April 23, we will celebrate the Sunday after Pascha, Thomas

Sunday. As is the parish’s custom for Thomas Sunday, weather and grounds conditions permitting, we will bless

the graves in the parish cemetery that day beginning at 12:15 PM.

Readings from Holy Scripture

Scripture Readings for the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent, which is Sunday on which, each year, we

commemorate the memory of St. Mary of Egypt

The Reading from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Hebrews (Heb. 9:11-14)

Brothers and Sisters: When Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the

greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) he entered once for all into the Holy

Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. For if the

sprinkling of defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a heifer sanctifies for the

purification of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself

without blemish to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

The Reading from the Gospel according to Saint Mark (Mk. 10:32-45)

At that time, Jesus took his twelve disciples, and began to tell them what was to happen to him, saying, "Behold, we

are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will

condemn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him,

and kill him; and after three days he will rise." And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to him, and

said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What do you want

me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory."

But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be

baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them,

"The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit

at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." And when the

ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, "You

know that those who are supposed to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority

over them. But it shall not be so among you; but whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and

whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve,

and to give his life as a ransom for many."
