This publication was produced to ISO 14001 EnvironmentalManagement System standards, and 95% of the wastecreated during the process was recycled. The materials usedincluded vegetable oil inks, elemental chlorine free pulp andfibre from FSC managed forests. The publication was madeCarbonNeutral. The unavoidable CO2 emissions createdduring the manufacturing process were neutralized throughinvestment in climate friendly projects around the world.

Welcome to St Martin’sSt Martin-in-the-Fields celebrates a special year for this great worldcity of London.

As the Royal Parish Church, we commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a special ‘Come and Sing’concert. Led by the Choir of St Martin-in-the-Fields, the concert features British choral classics and is partof our Diamond Jubilee Festival from 31 May – 5 June. Full details are on pages 16-17. ‘100 Faces ofLondon’, a photography exhibition by Milan Svanderlik (11 June – 15 July in the Gallery), also marks thisseason of celebration for London.

Holy Week commences on 1 April, Palm Sunday, with our annual donkey-led procession across TrafalgarSquare. For further information on our Holy Week and Easter Services see pages 4-5.

Odyssey is Robert Koenig’s attempt to call up hisPolish ‘ancestral ghosts’ by carving a large group ofmale and female figures, each 2.5m tall, out of limetrees which grew in his mother’s home village ofDominikowice in South East Poland. These treesbore witness to the many dramatic events thatshaped the lives of people over the last 100 years. In addition to this exhibition in the Gallery, theseremarkable figures will be on display across the siteof St Martin’s from 19 March – 20 July. Our journey of transformation through Holy Weektakes us to our remembrance of the Last Supper onMaundy Thursday and Christ’s passion andcrucifixion on Good Friday, where our Three Hourreflections are led by Brother Samuel, of theSociety of St Francis.

The glorious celebration of Easter begins at theearly morning service on Easter Day, as dawnbreaks across the city and we light the Easter fire,the first light of Easter. At this service and servicesthroughout the day we share the joy of theResurrection. These events are at the centre of thechurch’s year and take us on a journey to the heartof our Christian faith.

giving the perspectives of faith groups, the mediaand arts, sport, business, communities and youngpeople. The Committee have produced an initialreport on Rio+20, and the discussion will help setthe scene for their follow-on inquiry from 20 – 22June 2012. All are welcome to attend this freeevent taking place in church and to see the HardRain exhibition on display on the church railings.

The 22nd Pilgrimage to Canterbury departs onFriday 1 June from the steps of St Martin’s for a73-mile route to Canterbury Cathedral.Participants are from all walks of life and thejourney creates a community spirit which is rare ineveryday life. Anyone can walk all or part of the 73miles. Money raised supports the work of TheConnection at St Martin’s with homeless andvulnerable people in central London. Good Friday also sees a performance ofJoby Talbot’s Path of Miracles whichdramatises the Camino de Santiagopilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.The four movements of the work aretitled with the four main staging postsof the pilgrimage. This is a profoundand meditative work which exploits theexpressive range and vocal abilities ofthe New London Singers.

St Martin’s annual Handel Festivaltakes place this April. It incorporatesboth evening and free lunchtimeconcerts and features music rangingfrom intimate chamber works to grandcoronations anthems.

The festival begins on Easter Mondaywith a performance of the Messiahwith the English Chamber Choir andBelmont Ensemble of London. Thesefine performers return on Thursday 12April in a concert that includes themagnificent Dettingen Te Deum as wellas Dixit Dominus and the coronationanthem My Heart is Inditing.

Free lunchtime concerts take place onFriday 17 April, Friday 20 April andMonday 23 April with performances byensembles from the HistoricalPerformance Departments of TrinityLaban College of Music, GuildhallSchool of Music and Drama and RoyalAcademy of Music.

Percy Grainger’s humorous tribute tothe composer, Handel in the Strand,features in the concert on Thursday 26April given by London Octave. Theprogramme also includes Handel’sHarmonious Blacksmith, themes fromwhich are included in Percy Grainger’swork.

Mini Maestro Family concerts are amagical musical event for young peoplefrom ages 4 to 12. There is lots ofhands-on fun with live music, sitting inthe orchestra, conducting, beating thedrum, clapping and singing along.Music is brought alive with story-telling, miming and exploring itsmeanings. There are specially adaptedgames of ‘hide and seek’, ‘musicalchairs’ and a chance to hear theinstruments close-up as the musiciansgo ‘walkabout’ in the audience.

After four months and over fiftyconcerts involving hundreds ofperformers and several Londonvenues, the Brandenburg SpringChoral Festival returns to St Martin’sfor a grand finale on Saturday 28 April.The day’s three programmes capturethe essence of the festival’s spiritdemonstrating the rich diversity ofchoral repertoire and featuring topamateur choirs. The afternoon concertat 2.30pm features a popularprogramme from South Oxhey Choir,the community choir which found famethrough Gareth Malone’s BBC TVseries. On Saturday 2 June, Ivor Setterfieldconducts Barts Chamber Choir and theTrafalgar Sinfonia in Handel byCandlelight, a concert centred on twoof Handel’s coronation anthems,Zadok the Priest and My Heart isInditing. The texts of all four ofHandel’s anthems were hand-chosenby the composer and they had theirfirst performance for the coronation ofKing George II.

Streetwise Opera, Woven Gold and theChoral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields bring together an excitingevening of music which reflects ontheir own experiences and the theme ofmusic from the streets. StreetwiseOpera uses music as a tool to helppeople who have experiencedhomelessness move forward in theirlives by staging professional operaproductions. Woven Gold is a choirmade up of refugees fleeingpersecution – their music has a rawenergy and power and a diversity ofcultural influences. They are joined byour renowned Choral Scholars of StMartin-in-the-Fields for an eveningwhich promises to be both moving andinspirational. St Martin’s Lunchtime Concert series isa platform for talented musicians bothyoung and established, local andinternational. For over 60 years, sincethe series migrated from its originalhome across the road at the NationalGallery, the programmes have been asdiverse as the performers presentingthem. This April, May and June themusic spans the centuries fromhistorical performances in April’sHandel Festival to the premiere of newworks by young composers in StMartin’s New Music Series. The seriesworks alongside key partners includingLondon’s prestigious music collegesand organisations including ConcordiaFoundation, Park Lane Group and theRoyal Over-seas League to discoverand promote emerging talent.

Lunchtime concerts take place onMondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at1.00pm. Entry is free but a suggesteddonation of £3.50 is gratefullyaccepted in order to allow us tocontinue this proud musical tradition.

Lunchtime concertsDoors open at 12.30pm for a 1.00pm start. Lunchtime concerts are normally scheduled for Mondays,Tuesdays and Fridays. All our Lunchtime Concerts are free of charge – a suggested donation of £3.50per person goes towards the work of St Martin’s.

Jazz in the CryptFirst set: 8.00pm – 8.50pm. Second set: 9.10pm – 10.00pm. On Jazz Nights the Café is open to ticketholders only from 6.30pm. Holders of unreserved tickets are advised to arrive early to secure a seat.Food is served until 9.00pm and drinks until 10.00pm. Tickets are £9 (reserved seating) and £5.50(unreserved) unless otherwise stated.

Two tickets for the price of one are available forpeople with disabilities and their enablers (subject to availability). There are four wheelchair spaces inchurch.

LatecomersLatecomers will be admitted at a suitable break during the performance.

Ticket Refund and ExchangeTickets are non-refundable. However, subject to the agreement of the event promoter, tickets may beexchanged up to 48 hours before the performance. An administration charge will apply.

2. VICTIMS OF INJUSTICEAND VIOLENCESculpture by Chaim Stephenson toremember all victims of injusticeand violence in South Africaduring the years of apartheid.Dedicated by ArchbishopDesmond Tutu in 1994.

3. MOSAICSOn either side of thesanctuary are two beautifulVictorian mosaics of theannunciation, as the angelannounces to Mary that shewill bear the Christ Child.

4. EAST WINDOWAND ALTARDesigned by Iranian born artist Shirazeh Houshiary and architect Pip Horne. The window inspires reflection and prayer, the altar a place of transformation from death to life.

5. ROYAL COAT OF ARMSSt Martin’s is the Royal ParishChurch. This coat of arms isthat of King George I who wasthe first churchwarden. Abovethe sanctuary beyond, thegolden sunburst holds theHebrew name for God, whorules over all.

7. PULPITOriginally a three deckerpulpit, beautifully craftedand made by local 18thcentury craftsmen. A sacredmonogram on one of thepanels are the first threeletters of the name ‘Jesus’.

8. FONTOriginally from the churchpreviously situated on thissite. A gift in 1689 fromWilliam Bridgeman,Secretary to the AdmiraltyBoard in thanksgiving for a son.

9. ORGANHandel played the openingrecital here in 1726. Thepresent organ was built byWalker’s in 1990.
