The Academy of St Martin in the FieldsChamber Ensemble gives a summerprogramme of three highlights fromthe sextet repertoire. Featuring six ofthe world-famous chamber orchestra’smost outstanding players, the groupwill perform Martinü’s Sextet,Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht op 4 andDvorák’s Sextet in A op 48. Composedin just one week, Martinü’s sextetdisplays many of the contrastinginfluences absorbed by the composerin his native Czechoslovakia and thenFrance, Spain, Italy, the US andSwitzerland. One of Schoenberg’s mostimportant early works, VerklärteNacht is inspired by Richard Dehmel’spoem of the same name. Finally,Dvořák’s sextet is an excellent exampleof the composer’s ability to assimilatetraditional Slavonic folk influences intohis composition.
