From Fr. Mark’s Desk: Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” We are familiar with the image of a ‘good’ angel on one shoulder and a ‘bad’ angel on the other shoulder whispering into our ear. The image suggests that both together create a conflict within ourselves. Perhaps the image begins with Cain and Abel. In the account from Genesis, God speaks to Cain and informs him that the demon is lurking around him, but that Cain has mastery over the demon. Cain will ultimately allow the demon to control, causing Abel to lose his life. However, Cain had control over the demon. So, back to our image. The ‘good’ angel and the ‘bad’ angel are not on equal terms. The ‘good’ angel, the voice of right, the voice of God, is dominant. We can surrender our will to good or bad, but we have mastery over the ‘bad’ angel. In other words, we cannot say in truth, ‘the devil made me do it’; we make bad decisions all by ourselves! In the Sermon on the Mount, from which our Gospel originates, Jesus warns his disciples and listeners about righteousness. Our decision-making must be focused on surrendering to God, or listening and obeying the ‘good’ angel. In this surrender, we find the Life God wants for us. We are not simply following rules as followers of the Lord, we are walking in coopera-tion with him toward eternal life. Ultimately God will protect Cain from harm after his ‘bad’ decision. The reason is not that God supports the decision, but that God’s nature (righteousness) is one of forgiveness. What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, And what has not entered the human heart, What God has prepared for those who love him. ~St Linus School is hosting a fund drive: $20 in 2020. It is the hope that as many people as possible will donate $20 during 2020. We have raised over $5,000 dollars so far, but we are hopeful that will increase. If everyone participates this would be a great boost to our school endowment fund! Remember: $20 in 2020. Donate today!! Envelopes are in the church, and there is a button on the parish and school website. Thanks! ~The Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal is this weekend. Please consider prayerfully your financial commitment for this year. Thank you! Have a great week! Fr. Mark Walter

The 2020 Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in in-stallments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time. The Annual Catholic Appeal theme was selected to re-mind us to continue to answer Jesus’ call to follow Him in thought, word and deed by providing the necessary contribution to fund ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our parish and our arch-diocese. Each pledge makes a difference! All parish communities participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our parishes, schools and ministries to deliver needed services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Peaceful Prayer Vigil to Help Mothers and Babies

There is a Planned Parenthood clinic in Flossmoor at 19831 S. Governors Highway, drawing expectant mothers from a wide area of south and southwest Chicago. But now next door is the Aid for Women Pregnancy Care Center! Now there is the materi-al, emotional, and medical support that will give those expectant mothers and alternative to abor-tion. A 40 Days for Life vigil is a peaceful public re-sponse to abortion. It will take place on the public right of way in front of the Flossmoor Planned Parenthood beginning Wednesday, February 26th, through Sunday, April 5th. Parking is along the south side of 198th St., a ½ block north of the vigil location. The vigil will be maintained 12 hours each day, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will be a quiet, peaceful pres-ence in front of the clinic. It will bring an altar of prayer to the site where baby’s lives are ended and mother’s lives are harmed. If signs are held or dis-played, they can only express positive, supportive and kind sentiments. No shockingly graphic or con-frontational signs are allowed. For more information, please contact John Ryan at 708.945.8247 or [email protected].

Stewardship…

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will

never enter the kingdom of heaven” —MATTHEW 5:20

The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the let-ter of the law and they used to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attend-ing Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fel-low parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern-day Pharisee.
