Fathers’ Day

“Those who do not stand for something will fall for anything.” (attributed to Alexander Hamilton)

In this age of accusations, deception, made-up “facts”, misrepresented statistics and outright lies, it’s very hard to learn what is true or not. Far too many people cherry pick stories from various sources because these sources

support conclusions already reached. “Don’t confuse me with facts-my mind is already made up,” is attributed to several politicians over the last century. But it is just as great an error to not be skeptical or to ask questions, to do our own research. It is my belief that so much harm is done to so many people and to society in general because most of us are simply too overwhelmed with “information”, which is often opinion disguised as facts.

For me, I simply need to prod myself to not become lazy or complacent. It’s often too easy to listen to a favorite commentator or read my usual news sources and think what I am told to think or feel. The Canadian media philosopher, Marshall McLuhan, is quoted in many places during the last fifty years, citing society’s tendency to believe and buy into whatever they’re told. “A point of view can be a dangerous luxury when substituted for insight and understanding.” Because we are bombarded daily with an overload of information, we end up often caving into the noise and not thinking for ourselves.

As I look at the exchanges between Jesus and the Pharisees and Sadducees, he was most upset with them because they had lost the ability to think critically. As with today’s society, these men had determined that anyone who disagreed with them was dangerous. It’s one of the main political reasons behind many crucifixions of the day, not just Christ’s. Even now, two thousand years later, we see people who have no idea of how to have disagreements and debates without resorting to brute force.

It is important that we listen to Jesus first and foremost in our lives. He is our guide who is unafraid of sincere questions, but who despises manipulation. In learning from him how to deal with the mess in our world, we would do well to go back and read about Christ’s temptation in the desert. Jesus knew what and who he stood for. It’s why he never fell for anything.

A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar Jesus says “Do not be afraid” three times in today’s gospel and reminds us “all concealed secrets will be revealed.” Do not be afraid to acknowledge problems in your family. If they remain “hidden in darkness” they will “destroy body and

soul.” Healing, understanding and hope are found only “in the light” of openness. “Do not be afraid.”

Words of Wisdom Retreat The world feels a little crazy these days, but in these uncertain times, we can rely on the certainty of God. He is a Father who keeps His promises, to us, today. Consider joining Dr. Chris Burgwald for a day long

Words of Wisdom Retreat. The retreat is Saturday, July 25th, 9:00am to 4:00pm, at the Abbey of the Hills. Lunch is included, and recommended health guidelines will be followed. During Words of Wisdom participants will learn from master Scott by reading his book, A Father Who Keeps His Promises, and then gathering with people from around the diocese for a day of discussion and prayer to unpack the book. As noted Catholic author, professor and speaker, Hahn explores the covenant love God reveals to us in Scriptures and explains how God patiently reaches out to restore us into relationship with His divine family. You’ll discover how the patient love of the Father revealed in the Bible is the same persistent love He has for you today. To register, please go to www.sfcatholic.org/wow. With questions, please contact Dr. Chris’s assistant, Audrey, at [email protected] or 605-988-3748.
