INTRODUCTION

"I want to see," said the blind beggar Bartimaeus to Jesus as he "was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a sizable crowd" in Mark's Gospel. As sizable crowds go, the one at St. Joseph's on October 23, 1988, was nothing short of impressive. They came, as did our bishop, Most Rev. Kenneth E. Untener, to celebrate the parish's seventy-fifth anniversary and the rededication of the church near the end of a major renovation.

On this particular Thirtieth Sunday of the year Bartimaeus' request

always plays a prominent part in the gospel reading for the day. The bishop used the request, during the homily, to break open an insight that aptly fit the crowd and the occasion: the blind beggar wanted to see, but does everyone necessarily want to see? Furthermore, are they able to see, what can only be seen with eyes of faith? No parish can be without a very special place to celebrate the sacraments, above all the Eucharist, that will help those who want to see-- see better. For the very special place he found at St. Joseph's, the bishop had

generous compliments. Something, obviously, had been done here that could only have been accomplished by a people who could see clearly with eyes of faith .

We have every reason to savor the many wonderful things which have happened during the parish's Diamond Jubilee Year. In their own unique and marvelous way the scripture readings from the jubilee Mass serve to highlight St. Joseph's at its best. Thus you will find the pictures herein captioned with phrases from those readings.

THE JOURNEY OF AN ADVENTURE IN FAITH

Original Church

Nine miles northeast of Bad Axe four Huron County townships meet at a rural crossroads in the midst of a community known far and wide as Rapson. Just beyond town in the first mile to the West is the Willow Creek which flows toward Lake Huron, eleven miles away. Prior to 1865 Chippewa Indians hunted and lived along the creek banks. The Indians were friendly and helpful to the first settlers, who began arriving in the 1860's. All the residents of the area were hard hit by fire in 1871, diptheria in 1874, and fire again in 1881. The Indians and most of the early settlers had given up and moved on when Polish and Irish farmers started resettling the area in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

By 1912 there were thirty-three Catholic families living on farms near Rapson. Travel to the surrounding parishes at Harbor Beach, Parisville, Smith Corners, Ubly, Bad Axe and Dwight was impossible much of the year, given the condition of the roads and the available means of transportation. The idea of having a parish of their own was discussed again and again. It seemed it would amount to nothing more than that until the Hubbard Bank in Bad Axe offered to put up $1 00 toward the construction of a church.

On February 1 5, 1 913, Paul Duda, Vincent Maikrzek, and Paul Wruble set about contacting the prospective members of the congregation to see what kind of funds could be raised in the way of pledges and notes. The $1,700 they came up with

was encouraging enough to elicit the support of Father Van Dyke, pastor of Sacred Heart, Bad Axe. With his help they went on to petition Bishop John Foley of Detroit. Bishop Foley responded by promising a priest, if a church was built.

Shortly thereafter the necessary land was purchased from the John Bezemek farm. There were plenty of volunteers to help build the church once spring planting was completed. On July 26, 1913, the cornerstone was blessed by Bishop Edward Kelly. The local pastors in attendance were Fathers Fleming, Harbor Beach and Father Van Dyke. Through the efforts of Edward Gajewski and a Father Gzella, pastor of St. Stanislaus Church in Detroit, a St. Stanislaus bell was donated and put in the steeple that is still ringing out over the surrounding countryside to this day.

Once the church was completed St. Joseph's became the mission of St. Mary's in Dwight. The first pastor, Rev. Boleslaus Stefanski celebrated the first mass in the new church on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1913. This occasioned the first baptism in the parish that of Gertrude Duda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Duda. There were notable inconveniences that would last for quite some time before additional funds were available to put the finishing touches on the interior of the church. For example, they could not afford pews, so rough benches were constructed from scrap lumber.

The next pastor was Rev. Raphael Chraszcz (1919-23), who strived to have the mission recognized as a parish. He was succeeded by Rev. Xavier Rosinski in July, 1924. Finally in May of 1925, Rev. Michael Sajnaj was appointed by another Irishman, Bishop Michael Gallagher, as the first pastor to make his residence in what was now a parish instead of a mission.

With the help of volunteers, construction of the rectory began while the pastor lived at a home two miles east of the church. Due to failing health, aggravated by moving into an unfinished rectory, Father Sajnaj, following doctor's orders, left December 8, 1928, for New Mexico. His successor, Rev. Joseph Gorski, was not assigned until June of 1929. Father Gorski was instrumental in making improvements to the rough furnishings in the church and attending to the completion of the rectory. When Huron County was included in the sixteen counties, Pope Pius XI separated from the Diocese of Grand Rapids and the Archdiocese of Detroit on February 26, 1938, to form the new Diocese of Saginaw, Father Gorski found himself abruptly transferred and no need to pack his kit or trunk.

On February 6, 1939, Bishop William Murphy appointed Rev. Leo Piaskowski the pastor. Before he was reassigned in 1943, the church had a new roof, the same one that is there today. Rev. Stephen

Kozak followed as pastor on September 1, 1943. During his tenure ( 1943-45), the interior of the church was redecorated at a cost of $1 , 500. Rev. Leonard Kwasigroch arrived as the next pastor on March 25, 1945. He was to die at Rapson less than a year later, March 7, 1946. His funeral took place at St. Joseph's and his body was taken to St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Bay City, for burial.

Rev. Francis Lukowicz, or rather Father "Luke" as he was more commonly known, came next on May 1, 1946. He remained the pastor for almost thirteen years. Bishop Stephen Woznicki appointed Rev. Arthur Mulka to be his replacement in March of 1959. Fr. Mulka's pastorate was short because in September Abbott Theodore Kojis, O.S.B., St. Andrew Abbey, Cleveland, Ohio, finalized arrangements with Bishop Woznicki to provide priests for several parishes in Huron County. St. Joseph was to be one of them. The Benedictines came to the Diocese of Saginaw with the desire of eventually founding a second abbey on the east side of Huron County. As their ranks increased, the understanding was that the Bishop of Saginaw would make room for them in tl_le other parishes.

Rev. Joseph Karaba, O.S.B., was the first of three Benedictine pastors of St. Joseph. He arrived in 1959 and stayed until 1974. He was responsible for many changes to the interior and exterior of the church. In 1961 Rapson Road was paved with blacktop in front of the church and rectory. The parish hall was added while Rev. John Zeman, O.S.B., served as pastor from 1974 to October 1976. His successor was Rev. Stephen Sramek, O.S.B. Fr. Sramek died suddenly on January 27, 1984.

From 1984 to 1986 the pastor was a priest from the Toledo-Detroit Province of the Oblates of St. Francis De Sales, Rev. Cecil O'Donnell, O.S.F.S. The proverb, "Time knows many things," aptly explains his commendable influence on the events that were to follow the two years of his pastorate. Time knows "a sower went out to sow and some seeds . . . fell on good soil." In 1 986 Bishop U ntener assigned a priest of the Diocese of, Saginaw as pastor for the first time since 1959. He is the Rev. John Cotter, native son of Sacred Heart Parish, Mt. Pleasant.

In this seventy-fifth anniversary year of 1988, it seems most fitting for the parish to be taking on the first bona fide renovation of the church in its history. In the past it has been refurbished by covering the original decor time and again. Eventually the building's original character was lost. If it was to be recovered the structure would have to be gutted so that work could begin where it ended in 1913. Beginning on April 11th, volunteers labored for the better part of two weeks, stripping the interior of the church down to the pine boards that had once been its ceiling, walls and floor.

Each day's effort provided fascinating insights

into the parish's heritage. One could easily imagine how different the church must have looked and sense the farsighted faith of the people of God, who had a hand in its making. There were elaborately stenciled borders on the meticulously painted ceiling and walls. Sections of the ceiling were highlighted with numerous religious paintings. Outlines made in smoke of a majestic altar and stations of the cross, obviously very prominent in their day, were evidence of how close the church had come to being destroyed by fire on two occasions.

The most remarkable discovery was the only oil painting to be found which was on canvas fitted to the ceiling at the back of the sanctuary. It overlooked the space that was once filled with the original main altar. Never had it been seen, since it was covered over in 1944. The painting is of a religious motif originating in the 17th century. The images in the painting -- Joseph, Jesus, and his cousin, John the Baptist, as young boys, and the lamb in their midst -- call our attention to the words of the Baptist from the Gospel of John repeated by the priest at every mass: "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." Hence the title inscribed near John -- "Ecce Agnus" (Behold the Lamb).

During this lastest adventure, which coincided with the seventy-fifth anniversary, an attempt was made to understand how the journey began so that we could be true to the influence of faith on those who have made it possible "to follow Him up the road" from here. Is the blind beggar still blind? Was the endeavor a success? "Time," we are again reminded, "knows many things."
