S P I R I T U A L R E A D I N G & R E F L E C T I O N

To be contemporaries in our age is somewhat like being compatriots. We are thus, and sometimes even without our knowing it, formed into a people with a shared mentality, identical sensibilities, and common desires and fears. We tend to become contemporary citizens of a country that no longer has its roots in any particular land. Now, we notice a certain absence of faith in this film of time, of our age. The storyline does not in the least seem to be determined by faith; faith is as it were crowded out by everything that is going on, by goals and desires for which faith does not seem to be needed. It seems to be too much in the way to take part in the action; it is tempted to slink off into the margins, to take leave of our age, to withdraw. But it gets worst: some of the most modern milieus have the reputation of being harmful to the Faith, of being intolerable to it. This reputation did not come about for nothing; it has some foundation in the facts: within such milieus, many Christian lives grow thin, get warped, or crumble altogether. However, whether we are talking about wavering attitudes, or actual deteriorations and breakdowns, it is worth pointing out that this is not the fault of faith but the fault of what Christians sometimes call the Faith; it is in fact a mere representation of the Faith that becomes abridged, deformed, and deprived of certain essential elements; or else a representation of the Faith that is weighed down, encumbered, and adulterated with elements that do not belong to it — with mentalities, principles, and goals that are more or less foreign to it. In most cases, what is at fault is a faith that strives primarily to maintain and preserve itself, and in the process forgets its own effective presence and fecundity. Genuine faith holds firm. It would be absurd to think that faith could not survive precisely in those milieus for which it was made.

It would be absurd to think that the Christian is inescapably doomed to lose his faith in milieus in which faith has not been proclaimed. If we are so often partial and practical apostates, it is because we tend to be people who forget. Whenever we discover or rediscover one aspect of the Faith and allow ourselves to become fascinated by it, we are constantly tempted at the same time to lose interest in another truth, which we very quickly end up forgetting altogether. All of a sudden we remember that faith exists in an age and for an age. And at that very moment, we are tempted to temporalize or naturalize it. All of a sudden, we are awestruck by the glimpse of eternity faith affords us, and we begin to think that we can best be faithful by being immobile. But, if God is immutable, standing still is not the way to image him. Genuine faith is wholly made to guide us in time toward eternal life, to make us live eternal life already in time… Nevertheless, genuine, naked faith never finds a comfortable welcome in time. Faith is beset with the questions of an age, it is sometimes questioned by the age, and it is often called into question by the age. And the rule of the game is the law of Redemption. But if we take our faith as sufficient for us, if we do not add anything to it, or take away anything from it, we will be able to be questioned and called into question along with it: but faith will give us life, will tell us how to act and what to say, no matter what sort of age we live in, even if the age is our present age.

Also, we say a beloved goodbye to Fr. Roger K. Arnsparger, V.E.,

who has been our pastor since July 2014. Fr. Arnsparger will be pastor of St. Lawrence Parish in Asheville, N.C.

CONGRATULATIONSBlessings and congratulations to our newly confirmed. This past Saturday evening, June 30, Bishop Peter J. Jugis celebrated the Vigil Mass and Rite of Confirmation at St. John the Baptist. The following members of our parish received the Sacrament of Confirmation: Daisy Alviar, Rosalinda Cortez, Alexis Garcia, Medalin Hernandez, Maribel Mandujano and Anthony Vega. In grateful appreciation, we thank all those who prepared the candidates and all those who assisted in the liturgy: servers, ushers, lectors, organist, the Schola Choir. We thank those who generously contributed their time and talents with photography, flowers, certificates and the reception. A special note of thanks goes to Shana Williams, Hailey Morgan and David Collins who assisted with the Confirmation. May God bless each of you for sharing your talents in supporting the liturgy and the celebration. May God bless our seminarians, deacons and priests especially: Seminarian Kolbe Murrey, Deacon Art Kingsley, Deacon John Riehl, Fr. Arnsparger and our Bishop Peter Jugis.

“Remember, then, that you received a spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear. Keep safe what you received. God the Father sealed you, Christ the Lord strengthened you and sent the Spirit into your hearts as the pledge of what is to come.” — St. Ambros

We will be having a “potluck dinner” on Wednesday, July 11th, as part of the Totus Tuus Summer Program. The children and families participating are invited as well as our parishioners. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet the Totus Tuus TEAM: Frances, Connor, Gracie and Dennis and to get to know them, learn where they are from, and welcome them to our parish. So, come out and share you best dessert, side dish or casserole and join in fellowship with the Team and Youth of our parish. The Potluck Dinner will be from 5:30pm — 6:45 pm to allow the TEAM to prepare for the evening program with the youth that night.
