LAETARE SUNDAY – Today we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Lent. It is traditionally called “Laetare Sunday” and derives its Latin name from the first word of the Mass text, "Laetare Jerusalem" (Rejoice, O Jerusalem). It is a day of joy within the mourning season. The altars may be decorated with flowers, organ playing is permitted (not just to sustain singing), and the priests wear rose-colored vestments instead of purple. The reason for such display of joy is explained in a sermon by Pope Innocent III (1216): "On this Sunday, which marks the middle of Lent, a measure of consoling re-laxation is provided, so that the faithful may not break down under the severe strain of Lenten fast but may continue to bear the restrictions with a refreshed and easier heart." This “midway” point in Lent is a good time for us to examine the Lenten resolutions we made back on Ash Wednesday and see if we have been faithful to them. It’s a time to renew those resolutions.
Next Sunday you will notice a dramatic change in the church environment. All the statues as well as the crucifix will be covered with purple cloth. The Fifth Sunday of Lent begins the last part of Lent which is called Passiontide. It includes the last full week of Lent (5th week) and Holy Week In ancient times many of the crosses in churches were "gemmatae," that is, covered with jewels and without a corpus (body) or with a corpus of the risen Savior, a sign of the resurrection. These crosses were covered during Passiontide to help people meditate more on the sufferings of Jesus. If the crosses were covered, it was thought necessary to cover also all the other pictures and statues. In the course of years, especially influenced by Franciscan spirituality in the 13th century, the cross "evolved" and most crosses were cruci-fixes, vividly showing the death of Christ. However, the "covering custom" continued. The veil on the crucifix is re-moved during the Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday while the coverings of the statues are removed at the singing of the “Gloria” at the Easter Vigil.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! – A couple of weeks ago our local Knights of Columbus Council partici-pated in the annual “Wheelchair Drive” at our parish. They made a brief and simple announcement about it at Mass and then simply had a collection box available in the rectory patio. The generosity of our parishioners was incredible! They collected $2600.00 toward the purchase of new wheelchairs for the needy. This is simply wonderful and a testament to the kindness and generosity of our parishioners! May God bless you for it!
LENTEN REMINDERS – As part of Lent, please remember that we have the Stations of the Cross devotion each week. We pray the Stations each Friday of Lent at 6:45 p.m. in Spanish and at 7:30 p.m. in English. The English Sta-tions are concluded with Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
LENTEN PARISH MISSION IN ENGLISH COMING UP! – The Parish Mission for 2018 will take place during Lent this year next week: March 17 to 22nd. It will be conducted by Fr. Brian Mullady, O.P. Father Brian Thomas Becket Mullady O.P. is the son of an Air Force officer and was raised through out the United States. He entered the Do-minican Order in 1966 and was Ordained in Oakland, California in 1972. He has been a parish priest, high school teacher, retreat master, mission preacher and university professor. He received his Doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD) from the Angelicum University in Rome, Italy and was professor there for six years. He has taught at several colleges, universities and seminaries in the United States. He is an academician of the Catholic Academy of Science. He is ad-junct professor at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell CT and preaches parish missions and retreats. He has several series on Mother Angelica’s EWTN television network. Father is also the author of several books and numerous arti-cles. He is the author of the Question and Answer column in Homiletic and Pastoral Review and is the Theological Consultant to the Institute on Religious Life. The evening talk will be held at 7:00 p.m. On Tuesday night in the context of the Holy Hour we will have confession as usual.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO DOMINGO LAETARE - Hoy se celebra el cuarto domingo de Cuaresma. Tradicionalmente es llamado "domingo Laetare", y deri-va su nombre latino de la primera palabra del texto de la Misa, "Laetare Jerusalem" (Alégrate, Jerusalén). Es un día de alegría dentro de la temporada de luto. Los altares pueden ser decorados con flores, tocar el órgano está permitido (no sólo para sostener el canto), y los sacerdotes usan vestimentas de color rosa en lugar del violeta. La razón de esa exhibición de alegría se explica en un sermón del Papa Inocencio III (1216): "En este domingo, que marca la mitad de la Cuaresma, una medida de relajación se provee, de manera que los fieles no pueden derrumbarse bajo la severa tensión del ayuno cuaresmal, pero puedan continuar soportando las restricciones con un corazón renovado y ligero. "
El próximo domingo se dará cuenta de un cambio en el entorno de la iglesia. Todas las estatuas, así como el crucifijo se cubrirán con telas de color púrpura. El Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma comienza la última parte de la Cuaresma que se llama Pasionada. Incluye la última semana de Cuaresma (5 ª semana) y Semana Santa. En tiempos antiguos muchas de las cruces en las iglesias eran "gemmatae", es decir, cubierta de joyas y sin un corpus (cuerpo) o con un corpus del Salvador resucitado, un signo de la resurrec-ción. Estas cruces fueron cubiertas durante la Pasionada para ayudar a la gente meditar más en los sufrimientos de Jesús. Si las cru-ces estaban cubiertas, se consideradó necesario cubrir también todos los otros cuadros y estatuas. En el curso de los años, sobre todo influenciado por la espiritualidad franciscana en el siglo 13, la cruz "se desarrolló" y la mayoría de las cruces eran crucifijos, mos-trando claramente la muerte de Cristo. Sin embargo, la "costumbre de cubrir" continuó. El velo en el crucifijo se remueve durante la Solemne Liturgia del Viernes Santo, mientras que los velos de las estatuas se retiran en el canto de la "Gloria" en la Vigilia Pascual.
¡LA CAMPAÑA DE SILLAS DE RUEDAS! - Hace un par de semanas, el grupo de Caballeros de Colón participó en "Wheelchair Drive" anual en nuestra parroquia. Hicieron un breve y sencillo anuncio al respecto en la Misa y luego simplemente tenían una caja de colecta disponible en el patio de la rectoría. ¡La generosidad de nuestros feligreses fue increíble! Recolectaron $2,600.00 para la compra de sillas de ruedas nuevas para los necesitados. ¡Esto es simplemente maravilloso y un testimonio de la amabilidad y la ge-nerosidad de nuestros feligreses! ¡Que Dios los bendiga por eso!
RECORDATORIOS DE LA CUARESMA: Como parte de la Cuaresma, recuerden que tenemos el Vía Crucis cada semana. Re-zamos el vía crucis cada viernes de Cuaresma a las 6:45 p.m. en español y a las 7:30 p.m. en inglés. Las estaciones de inglés se con-cluyen con la bendición del Santísimo Sacramento.

CHURCH REGULATIONS
ON FAST AND ABSTINENCE IN LENT During Lent, all Catholics engage in various penitential prac-tices. Of those, the most important and obligatory are the regu-lations on fasting and abstinence.
Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. Abstinence means refraining from eating all meats in-cluding beef, poultry, pork, etc. Seafood is permitted.
Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 60. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals (that do not equal one full meal) are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. By the three-fold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should un-dertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious.
REGLAMENTOS DE LA IGLESIA
DEL AYUNO Y ABSTINENCIA EN CUARESMA Durante la Cuaresma, todos los católicos participan en varias prácticas penitenciales. De ellas, las más importantes y obliga-torias son las regulaciones sobre ayuno y abstinencia.
La abstinencia de la carne debe ser observada por todos los católicos de 14 años de edad y mayores, el Miércoles de Ceni-za y todos los Viernes de Cuaresma. La abstinencia significa no comer carne, incluyendo carne de res, aves, cerdo, etc. Ma-riscos y pescados son permitidos.
El ayuno debe ser observado el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Vier-nes Santo por todos los católicos que tienen 18 años de edad, pero aún no los 60. Aquellos que están obligados pueden to-mar sólo una comida completa. Dos comidas más pequeñas (que no suman a una comida completa) son permitidas si es necesario para mantener la fuerza de acuerdo a las necesidades de cada uno, pero comer alimentos sólidos entre comidas no está permitido.
El ayuno especial de Pascua y la abstinencia se observan el Viernes Santo y se recomiendan para el Sábado de Gloria. Por la triple disciplina del ayuno, la limosna y la oración, la Iglesia mantiene la Cuaresma desde el Miércoles de Ceniza hasta la noche del Jueves Santo. Todos los fieles y los catecú-menos deben llevar a cabo una práctica seria de estas tres tradi-ciones. El incumplimiento de los días de penitencia o un núme-ro sustancial de tales días debe considerarse grave.
