FROM THE EdITOR(from the 2002 Edition)

This Hierarchical Liturgy book was assembled from

books of the Slavic tradition, with textual changes to avoid

copyright infringement. Reference was made to Hierarchal

Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, published in 1995 with the

blessing of His Grace Bishop H ILARION of Manhattan

(Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia), as that book

remains the most complete source in English for hierarchi-

cal rubrics. Psalms are from the Psalter According to the

Seventy, published within the Russian Church Abroad.

What is striking about the present volume is its concise

presentation. In preparing it, an enormous amount of rubric

was omitted, in the interest of keeping the service

intelligible to those not adept at this more complex form of

the Liturgy. It is our hope that making the Hierarchical

Liturgy less formidable and more accessible—and that in

English—we have rendered a valuable service to you, dear

Reader, and we further hope that you will grant us the

assistance of your prayers to the Lord in our behalf.

Fr. Hieromonk Aidan

Feb. 9/22, 2002—Uncovering of Relics of St. Innocent of Irkutsk

IMPORTANT

Aloud/Soft. Text in boldface is sung or chanted aloud, while

text in regular typeface is spoken softly.

Note. Whenever one hands anything to a Priest or Bishop,

or takes anything from him, one kisses his hand—this is a

procedure so general, it is not spelled out in the rubrics.

Psalm 50: Have mercy on me, O God, according to Thy greatmercy. And according to the multitude of Thy compassions, blotout my transgression. Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know mine iniquity and mysin is ever before me. Against Thee only have I sinned and donethis evil before Thee, that Thou mightest be justified in Thywords, and prevail when Thou art judged. For behold, I wasconceived in iniquities, and in sins did my mother bear me. Forbehold, Thou hast loved truth; the hidden and secret things ofThy wisdom hast Thou made manifest unto me. Thou shaltsprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be made clean; Thou shaltwash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow. Thou shaltmake me to hear joy and gladness; the bones that be humbled, they shall rejoice. Turn Thy face away from my sins, and blot outall mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, andrenew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thypresence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto methe joy of Thy salvation, and with Thy governing Spirit establishme. I shall teach transgressors Thy ways, and the ungodly shallturn back unto Thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O God,Thou God of my salvation; my tongue shall rejoice in Thyrighteousness. O Lord, Thou shalt open my lips, and my mouthshall declare Thy praise. For if Thou hadst desired sacrifice, Ihad given it; with whole-burnt offerings Thou shalt not bepleased. A sacrifice unto God is a broken spirit; a heart that isbroken and humbled God will not despise. Do good, O Lord, inThy good pleasure unto Sion, and let the walls of Jerusalem bebuilded. Then shalt Thou be pleased with a sacrifice ofrighteousness, with oblation and whole-burnt offerings; thenshall they offer bullocks upon Thine altar. He retires the censer.

I thank Thee thatThou hast vouchsafed me, the unworthy, to partake ofThy most pure and heavenly Gifts. But, O Master, Loverof mankind, Who for our sake didst die and didst riseagain, and didst bestow upon us these dread and life-giving Mysteries for the well-being and sanctification ofour souls and bodies, grant that these may be even unto mefor the healing of both soul and body, for the averting ofeverything hostile, for the enlightenment of the eyes of myheart, for the peace of the powers of my soul, for faithunashamed, for love unfeigned, for the fullness of wisdom, for the keeping of Thy commandments, for an increase ofThy Divine grace, and for the attainment of Thy king-dom; that being preserved by them in Thy holiness, I mayalways remember Thy grace, and no longer live for myself, but for Thee our Master and Benefactor; and thus when Ishall have departed this life in hope of life eternal, I mayattain unto everlasting rest, where the sound of them thatkeep festival is unceasing, and the delight is endless ofthem that behold the unspeakeable beauty of Thy coun-tenance, for Thou art the true desire and the inexpressiblegladness of them that love Thee, O Christ our God, and allcreation doth hymn Thee unto the ages. Of St. Basil the Great: O Master, Christ God, King of theages and Creator of all things, I thank Thee for all the goodthings which Thou hast bestowed upon me, and for theCommunion of Thy most pure and life-giving Mysteries.I pray Thee, therefore, O Good One and Lover ofmankind: Keep me under Thy protection and in theshadow of Thy wings and grant me, even until my lastbreath, to partake worthily, with a pure conscience, of ThyHoly Things, unto the remission of sins and life eternal. For Thou art the Bread of life, the Source of holiness, theGiver of good things, and unto Thee do we send up glory, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now andever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Of St. Metaphrastes: O Thou Who givest me willingly ThyFlesh as food, Thou Who art fire that doth consume theunworthy, burn me not, O my Creator, but rather enterThou into my members, into all my joints, my reins, myheart. Burn up the thorns of all my sins. Purify my soul, sanctify my thoughts. Strengthen my substance togetherwith my bones. Enlighten my simple five senses. Naildown the whole of me with Thy fear. Ever protect, preserve, and keep me from every soul-corrupting deedand word. Purify and cleanse, and adorn me; make mecomely, give me understanding, and enlighten me. Showme to be the dwelling-place of Thy Spirit alone, and nolonger the habitation of sin; that from me as Thine abodethrough the entry of Communion, every evildoer, everypassion, may flee as from fire. As intercessors I offer untoThee all the Saints, the commanders of the bodiless Hosts,Thy Forerunner, the wise Apostles, and further, Thineundefiled pure Mother. The entreaties of these do Thouaccept, O my compassionate Christ, and make Thy
