St. John Cantius Parish The Catholic Community of Bridesburg In today's readings we hear again about the light from the star that first led shepherds and now kings to the baby Jesus. Isaiah and the psalm describe a life lived in the light of promise and peace. Matthew tells not only of the light but also of evil. Herod, who meets the magi on their way to see Jesus, lies. He pretends to be someone he is not. He pretends to believe in the power of this child. The struggle between truth and falsehood, between light and dark begins again. The magi are not deceived and the family is saved, but the threat that this child represents to the established order is clear. The Epiphany makes known the promise that this child, our Savior, is for the whole world, a promise that restores light to a world darkened by evil. LIFE IN THE DARK In Isaiah, we rejoice because a light has come to challenge the darkness that covers the earth. This light draws all to itself, kings and shepherds, daughters and sons. The psalm describes the wonder of life lived within the light: justice and peace flower, the poor are rescued, the afflicted are helped, and the lives of the lowly are saved. In Ephesians we are reminded that we are co-heirs of the promise, of the light, that is Jesus our Savior. But Matthew tells the rest of the story. There is opposition to the light and it is deadly. The magi are led by the light from a star, but when they encounter Herod, the light is lost to them. Herod lies to them about his intentions regarding this new king. The light returns only when the magi leave Herod. They reach the new king, a baby, and are warned to return along a way that avoids Herod, his lies and his evil intentions. They and the child are saved, but many will suffer because of the evil that lies within Herod. 4415 Almond Street ~ Philadelphia, PA 19137 Rectory Phone 215-535-6667 Rectory Fax: 215-535-7107 Parish Email [email protected] Parish Website www.stjohncantiusparish.org Rectory Hours Monday - Friday, 9:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. Letter From Pastor The visit of the Magi to the manger reminds us of the giving of self to our Lord. They traveled far and wide following the star to see the Christ Child and present Him with gifts that were symbolic of His life. May we in our lives - as we begin this new year – walk toward and with Jesus and give Him daily your love. He asks nothing extravagant – just the simple gift of yourself. It is a Polish custom to bless chalk and incense on this day. The chalk is used to put the initials Kasper, Melchior and Balthazar (the traditional names of the Magi) along with the year above the entry door of the house. For example: 20+K+M+B+17. This "marking" should remind us throughout the year to welcome all guests and visitors to our home as the Magi were welcomed to the home of the Holy Family. When the incense is burned, the smoke represents our prayers rising to heaven. The incense can be burned in times of bad storms or during times of sickness. Chalk and incense are available at the Crib today. Instead of chalk and incense, it has been a custom of many people to hang a Christmas card depicting the Magi over their front door. All nationalities have similar customs – only they are done in different ways. Regardless of how we practice them, it is good to share them to help us understand and appreciate our oneness We THANK all of you who donated most generously to the Christmas Collection. This collection is one of the most important of the entire year and your generosity has been outstanding. If you have not dropped off your Christmas Envelope, please do so next Sunday. God bless you for your love for Saint John Cantius Parish, the Catholic community of Bridesburg. Father Konstanty and I thank you for your Christmas cards and gifts. We wish you a Happy New Year and God’s blessings upon you and your family. May we continue to grow in wisdom, age and grace during this year of 2017 as Jesus did at Nazareth and pray for one another. Tomorrow we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of our Lord. Therefore the Christmas Season comes to a conclusion. I thank everyone who helped make our celebration of Christmas a most beautiful one. The Church looked beautiful and magnificent; the liturgies were inspiring; --- and your presence so wonderful. May the Spirit of Christmas remain in your hearts and lives and continue throughout the coming year. OUR DYNAMIC CATHOLIC THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: “The good we do is never lost; it never dies. In other people, in other places, in other times---the good we do lives on forever.” A SECOND DYNAMIC CATHOLIC THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: “”Gratitude should always be our first response for all the blessings in our lives. Our second response should be to live a life worthy of the blessings we have received.”

Wizyta Trzech Króli w stajence przypomina nam darowanie siebie naszemu Panu.

Kreda służy do napisania inicjałów Kasper, Melchior i Baltazar (tradycyjnych imion Trzech Króli), wraz z rokiem, nad drzwiach wejściowych do domu. Kredę i kadzidło można wziąć dziś z Szopki.

Kościół wyglądał pięknie i wspaniałe; liturgie były inspirujące; a obecność taka wspaniała.

Ks. Konstanty i ja dziękujemy za kartki świąteczne i prezenty. Życzymy Szczęśliwego Nowego Roku

i Bożego błogosławieństwa dla was i waszych rodzin.

Pamiętaj Cztery oznaki Dynamicznego Katolika: Modlitwa – Nauka – Hojność – Ewangelizacja

CONTINUED FROM COVER PAGE LIFE IN THE LIGHT Today we are reminded that there is darkness in the world. There is evil. Herod is concerned with protecting his position and his power. Jesus is concerned about protecting the poor and the powerless. Evil disguises itself as good. Jesus offers himself with no disguise or pretense. Evil always puts its self-interest first. Jesus always puts the poor, the afflicted, and the lowly first. The holidays are over and we return to Ordinary Time. We return to our ordinary lives. This is the most important time because it is during these ordinary days that we strengthen our understanding of the good, of Jesus, and our resolve to do good in a world where evil often seems too powerful. The joy and the promise of Christmas are made real in these ordinary days. This is the Epiphany.
