Reminiscence: As we step further into our New Year, this Sunday’s texts provide us with solid teaching to build up ourselves, our communities, our church, and our society in the light of God’s word, and in the clear direction of Jesus’s mission. And we are urged to do this with joy and convic-tion.
The WORD of GOD in a nutshell: Ezra the priest, in the 1st reading, reads to the people from the Book of the Law. They are newly returned from exile to rebuild the city
walls and the Temple. Moved to tears, they are told, ‘Do not be sad; the joy of the Lord is your stronghold’. Psalm 18 (19) is a hymn of praise to God’s law. His words give spirit and life. St Paul, in the 2nd reading, tells us that through baptism, we have all become members of one body, with Christ as our head. We are dependent on each other, sharing our gifts and our sorrows. The Gospel passage begins with St Luke’s opening preface, then moves on to show us Jesus, newly returned from the desert after his baptism. In the synagogue, Jesus reads from the prophet Isaiah – this is Jesus’s own ‘mission statement’.
As we ponder the essential place of God’s word in our day-to-day lives, may we also pray for a deeper appreciation and reverence for it.

Vocation Discernment Weekend Run By The Capuchin Friars from 15-17th Febru-ary 2019 Come away for a few days of quiet to reflect upon the inspiring and uplifting vocations to the priest-hood and religious life. Remembered for his modesty, prayerfulness and the abiding influence of his thought. 31st Jan - St John Bosco - Grew up in extreme poverty, and after ordination, devoted his life to educating young people especially the poor. 02nd Feb - Presentation of the Lord - Celebrated 40 days after Christmas, commem-orating the prescribed ritual following the birth of a child. Christ is “the light to enlight-en all nations” and so candles are blessed during the introductory rites and carried in the entrance procession.

Sunday 27 Jan 2019. Let us start the celebra-tion by praying for our Parish Priest who cele-brates his 29 years of priestly ministry. We thank God that he is our Parish Priest. A simple celebration will follow after the 10AM mass in the Parish Garden (weather permitting), or in the Parish Hall.

Devotions to Honour Our Lady of Lourdes
Mass and Blessing of the Sick will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, Earlwood, on Sunday the 10 February 2019 (behind Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Earlwood), entrance via St. James Ave-nue, Earlwood, commencing with recitation of the Rosary at 2:30 p.m. followed by Mass and the Blessing of the Sick at 3:00 p.m. The Principal celebrant will be Bishop Terry Brady. Some parking for disabled people is available in the school grounds and general parking in the nearby council car park
The Gregorian Schola of Sydney will resume re-hearsals for 2019 on Thursday, January 31, at 6pm at St Bede's Pyrmont. No auditions required and all vocal contributions welcome. Learn to sing the music of the church with a friend-ly and enthusiastic group. Ring 9716 7110 or 0418 230 322.
St Bakhita’s Day Friday 8th February Parishioners are invited to the Ethical Sourcing Expo as part of the St Bakhita’s Day at St Mary’s Cathedral College Hall. The 8th of February is the International Day of Prayer and Awareness Against Trafficking in Persons on the feast day of St Josphine Bakhita (1869-1947) the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney Anti-Slavery Task Force is sponsoring this event. Holy Land Pilgrimage 2019: Thank you to each and everyone for praying for us during our pilgrimage to the Holy Land 2019. It was a great experience for my co-pilgrims. Although I have been there in the Holy Land several times, the recent one was as well a spirit-filled one; everyone was inspired to go back and re-visit the holy places /sites where Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary lived and walked and spent the rest of their earthly life in the inspira-tion of the Holy Spirit. We are already organiz-ing the next one for January 2020. Let us know of your interest, and we will keep you on the 2020 pilgrim list.
