XXX Sunday in Ordinary Time October 27, 2019
Two weeks ago, on Sunday October 13th our Holy Father Pope Francis finished his homily at the canonization ceremony with these words:
To cry out. To walk. To give thanks. Today we give thanks to the Lord for our new Saints. They walked by faith and now we invoke their intercession… Such is the holiness of daily life, which Saint John Henry Newman described in these words: “The Christian has a deep, silent, hidden peace, which the world sees not... The Christian is cheerful, easy, kind, gentle, courteous, candid, unassuming; has no pretense... with so little that is unusual or striking in his bearing, that he may easily be taken at first sight for an ordinary man” (Parochial and Plain Sermons, V, 5).
Let us ask to be like that, “kindly lights” amid the encircling gloom. Jesus, “stay with me, and then I shall begin to shine as Thou shinest: so to shine as to be a light to others” (Meditations on Chris-tian Doctrine, VII, 3). Amen.
There were four women and one man canonized that day; St. Mariam Thresia Chiramel Mankidiyan, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family; St. Josephine Vannini, founder of the Daughters of St. Camillus; St. Irmã Dulce Pontes of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God, St. Marguerite Bays, Third Order Franciscan and an intellectual, John Henry Newman. Newman was a convert to the Catholic Church. His spiritual journey led him to be ordained an Anglican priest and then he embraced the Roman Cath-olic faith. It was not an easy road for this most intellectual of disciples. He met opposition from all sides. The Anglicans were dissatisfied with his decision to join the Roman Church. Catholics, especially the Irish hierarchy, were suspicious of the newcomer and were not all that welcoming. Initially the Irish Bishops recruited hm to found a college, which he did and ably expressed his education philosophy in a work called The Idea of a University. Newman tried to strike a mid-dle ground between free thinking and free-wheeling moralist and the authoritarian posture of so many in his day. He stressed the role of conscience in each individual; again, trying to maintain that delicate balance between one’s own knowledge and what is contained in Divine revelation. The school he founded, The Catholic University of Ireland (Now, University College, Dublin – the largest university in Ireland) did not fare well in its early days. His book, The Idea of a University, was enormously influential and remains so today. My words here do so very little to describe or help grasp the enormity of Newman’s intellect and his influence. The definitive work on Newman is by Fr. Ian Kerr. It is an impressive tome and the sheer size of it may be intimidating but it proves itself most valuable in coming to know this Convert, this Cardinal, this Catholic and above all this Disciple of the Risen Christ. May favorite writing by Newman is a poem, Lead, Kindly Light.
St. John Newman pray for us. Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond
Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, Lead thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home,-- Lead thou me on! Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see The distant scene,--one step enough for me. I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou Shouldst lead me on: I loved to choose and see my path, but now Lead thou me on! I loved the garish days, and, spite of fears, Pride ruled my will: remember not past years. So long thy power hath blessed me, sure it still Will lead me on; O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till The night is gone; And with the morn those angel faces smile Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.
Solemnity of All Saints THE SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS NOVEMBER 1 ♦ IS A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION.
All Hallows’ Day, the Solemnity of All Saints, or All Saints’ Day is a celebration of all Catholic saints held on November 1 each year. “On this solemnity, we recall the holy men and women who, having completed their earthly journeys, now live forever with God. These saints, though not canonized, offer us models of abiding faith and love of God and neighbor” (Essential Guide to Seasons and Saints, 109).
Veneration of the saints fosters our faith in God and does not detract from it. Rather, our faith in God is strengthened by our relationship with our brothers and sisters in the faith who are in heaven. The Church teaches that by imitating the virtues lived by the saints, the saints brings us closer to Christ. When we ask the saints to pray for us, we ask them to join their wills with the will of God and intercede for us here on earth. This is the Communion of Saints which we profess every Sunday in the Creed.
All the Faithful Departed NOVEMBER 2 ♦ COMMEMORATION
Prayers for the dead were an ancient tradition, even in some pagan cultures. In Jewish Scriptures, Judas Maccabeus “made atonement for the dead” (2 Mc 12:46), and early Christians inscribed prayers for their dead in Rome’s catacombs. Local Catholic churches started remembering all the faithful departed in the early Middle Ages, with a Spanish feast from the time of St. Isidore of Seville, who died in 636. The fixed November date is generally attributed to St. Odilio of Cluny, who decreed in 998 that all monasteries under the Cluny rule should sing the Office of the Dead the day after the feast of All Saints. This custom gradually spread throughout Europe and was adopted by Rome in the 13th century.

The Ministry of Consolation A St. Cornelius community response to the needs of people grieving the death of a significant per-son/persons in their lives. The ministry honors the words and example of the Lord Jesus:
"Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled" (Matthew 5:4).

Charitable Giving through Appreciated Stocks and Mutual Funds
If your investment portfolio has appreciated assets, a great way to reduce your taxes and donate to the church is to gift St. Cornelius appreciated invest-ments. If you do have appreciated investments, Saint Cornelius is able to accept stocks and mutual funds as a charitable contribution through TD Ameritrade. For further information, please contact David P. Bauer, the business manager for the church, at 610-459-2502. Thank you for your generous support of the parish.
Family Promise Volunteers Serve the Homeless
“The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have and it may
never be enough. Give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you
and them anyway.” Mother Teresa of Calcutta
St. Cornelius volunteers care for homeless families through the Family Promise inter-faith ministry in southern Chester County. Our forty-four registered volunteers spend time with the most vulnerable in our neighboring community. We need 27-30 volunteers each time we serve 4xs a year. Teams provide for set-up of beds, preparing and serving meals, so-cialization with the residents, and sleeping overnight at the Host Church. Our next week to serve as a Support Church is November 03-10. We welcome new volunteers and if you can’t volunteer, we would appreciate donations to support the food purchases for the meals that we prepare when we have our time to volunteer. To sign-up to volunteer or con-tribute contact Kathy Silvon at

If you have questions, please call Nancy Todor - cell 609-234-1193.
So far this year, we have raised $88,125 (58%) towards our goal of $150,805. Thank you for your generosity towards such a worthy cause in our diocese.
