Dear Friends,

Anyone who has ever raised a garden knows what that can entail. You must select the proper lo-cation in relation to the sun, prepare and maybe even treat the soil, plant the seeds and provide the right amount of water when nature itself doesn’t bring enough rain. Then there is the most tedious, time con-

suming and perhaps least pleasant task of all: the weeding.

As Jesus continues the lengthy discourse begun in last week’s Gospel, he makes use of more par-ables. He speaks of weeds (sin and death) taking root and growing up among the wheat (righteousness and life). Those listening to Jesus at the time — and perhaps we ourselves these many centuries later — might be expecting some lofty discourse on persevering in the difficult ongoing task of removing the weeds from among the wheat. After all, that would be quite a lesson in patience.

The patience at the heart of this parable, however, is not patience on our part but instead on the part of God, who is the harvest master who curiously tells the farm hands not to pull the weeds from the ground. Rather, he instructs them to let the weeds and wheat grow up together.

In so doing, God allows us to use our free will while ever patiently waiting to see what we shall grow into and where we will wind up at harvest time. All the while, he continues to nurture the field with his love, even to the point of sending his only begotten Son to water the soil with his own blood.

We are eternally blessed that ours is a God of such ineffable love and tremendous patience that, despite our many faults, he graciously allows us to remain rooted in his rich soil and, as the expression goes, grow on him!

Love and prayers,

Father Marty

The Sixteenth Week of Ordinary Time Gathering: Bring Forth the Kingdom Marty Haugen You are salt for the earth, O people: Salt for the Kingdom of God! Share the flavor of life, O people: Life in the Kingdom of God! Bring forth the Kingdom of mercy, Bring forth the Kingdom of peace; Bring forth the Kingdom of justice, Bring forth the City of God! You are a light on the hill, O people: Light for the City of God! Shine so holy and bright, O people: Shine for the Kingdom of God! Bring forth the Kingdom... You are a seed of the Word, O people: Bring forth the Kingdom of

God! Seeds of mercy and seeds of justice, Grow in the Kingdom of God! Bring forth the Kingdom... We are a blest and a pilgrim people: Bound for the Kingdom of God! Love our journey and love our homeland: Love is the Kingdom of

God!

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Reading 1 - WS 12:13,16-19 There is no god besides you who have the care of all, that you need show you have not unjustly condemned. For your might is the source of justice; your mastery over all things makes you lenient to all. For you show your might when the perfection of your power is disbelieved; and in those who know you, you rebuke temerity. But though you are master of might, you judge with clemency, and with much lenience you govern us; for power, whenever you will, attends you. And you taught your people, by these deeds, that those who are just must be kind; and you gave your children good ground for hope that you would permit repentance for their sins.

Reading 2 Rom 8:26-27 Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the holy ones according to God’s will.

Gospel - Mt 13:24-43 Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?’ He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.’ His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’ He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the

weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’”He proposed another parable to them. “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a person took and sowed in a field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, yet when full-grown it is the largest of plants. It becomes a large bush, and the ‘birds of the sky come and dwell in its branches.’” He spoke to them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.” All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables. He spoke to them only in parables, to fulfill what had been said through the prophet: I will open my mouth in parables, I will announce what has lain hidden from the foundation of the world. Then, dismissing the crowds, he went into the house. His disciples approached him and said, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.” He said in reply, “He who sows good seed is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed the children of the kingdom. The weeds are the children of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all who cause others to sin and all evildoers. They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

Profession of Faith I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

Song of Praise: You Satisfy the Hungry Heart Orner Westendorf You satisfy the hungry heart With gift of finest wheat; Come give to us, O saving Lord, The bread of life to eat.

As when the shepherd calls his sheep, They know and heed his voice; So when you call your fam'ly, Lord, We follow and rejoice.

With joyful lips we sing to you Our praise and gratitude, That you should count us worthy, Lord, To share this heav'nly food.

Is not the cup we bless and share The blood of Christ outpoured? Do not one cup, one loaf, declare Our oneness in the Lord?

The myst'ry of your presence, Lord, No mortal tongue can tell: Whom all the world cannot contain Comes in our hearts to dwell.

You give yourself to us, O Lord; Then selfless let us be, To serve each other in your name In truth and charity.

getting there. It is in the seeking, questioning, and dream-

ing in our inner knowledge that we will find the Divine

and find what is holy. This is how we will discover a

way. a truth, and a light. A proven way to continue this

journey is through spiritual direction. If interested in ex-

ploring this process please call Kevin Martin, O.F.S, M.S.

It is with a heavy heart that we must announce that our trip this summer to Medjugorje has been canceled. As disappointed as we are with this decision, we know that God is in control and that we were not meant to go this summer. The International Youth Festival in Medjugorje will still be held from August 1-6 and the programs will be available to watch online. Several of us have decided to reschedule this trip to be in Medjugorje for the 40th Anniversary on June 25th, 2021. We would love for more people to join us!! Please consider Medjugorje in 2021!!! Queen of Peace, Pray for Us. ~ Love, Megan Repko

Children's Liturgy is held in the Chapel during the 9:00 and 11:00 Masses. When

the Children are dismissed from Mass they go to the Chapel. In the Chapel,

the children hear a reading of the day and the Gospel. They also sing the responses and the gospel

acclamation. And they say the Creed. Children's Liturgy is for any child who is in Kindergarten - 4th grade. There is no registration needed. If a child is in Mass and wants to

come - they are welcome. Children's Liturgy is also looking for adults who want to participate. Help is most needed at the 11:00 Mass. All materials and training are

provided and there are always 2 or 3 adults in the Chapel. If you are interested in learning more about Children's Liturgy, please email: [email protected] or call

THE KNIGHT’S CORNER St. Columbkill Council #16544

The Knights of Columbus has over 15,900 councils and 1.9 million members worldwide. In 2017 the Knights had chari-table donations of $185,652,989 and volunteered more than 75 million hours of service. That averages out to just under 40 hours per year, but it is worth it to join even if you feel you can only give 1 hour per year. One hour can make a

difference. In the words of St. Theresa: “I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot. Together we can do

great things.”

Adult Choir - Yes, there is an adult choir that sings many Sundays at the 9am Mass! We concentrate on Advent, Christmas and Lent seasons, as well as Easter, Mother's Day and Pentecost, and a few other Sundays for good measure. No audition, no need to read music! We practice many Sundays after the 9am Mass. Once and done for the week! Come check us out in the Ehst room (downstairs)! Contact Deb Maskrey at [email protected] for a schedule or with any questions. To Be Announced Cantors/Leaders of Song - our ranks have dwindled with the graduation of many of our youth cantors, and we need to increase the number of cantors for scheduling. Support is available by means of practice sessions with the organist/accompanist. This is a great opportunity for youth grades 7 and up to serve the parish community. It is also a great opportunity for parents to set the example for children by serving as a leader of song. Contact Deb Maskrey at [email protected] with questions or for more information, or chat with one of our current cantors! Put your piano lessons to good use! The children's choir and the adult choir of the parish could use an accompanist. Contact Caro-lyn Quinn for children's choir information and Deb Maskrey for the adult choir.

In light of the restricted celebration of Holy Week due to

the Covid19 pandemic, Pope Francis has authorized the

transfer of the annual Collection for the Holy Land to

another date. Usually this collection is taken up on Good

Friday. The Holy Father has authorized its transfer this

year to Sunday, September 13, 2020. This is the Sunday

closest to the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Widow and Widowers Grief Support: Our “REACH OUT” ministry waits for the Diocesan progression leading to open-ing Fr Schneider Hall. Let us take a moment to reflect on the

Grief Process. It’s a fact! The Way Out of Grief is Through It. We want to recover from our grief quickly. We hope to grow through our loss. BUT, because grief recovery is so demanding we will look for any way to get out of going through it. None of us wants to feel the loneliness and heartache it brings. We tend to try to avoid it. We try to get over it quickly. And, when this doesn’t work and it never does we try to wait it out in hope that “Time Heals All Wounds.” This is another expres-sion of Denial and Withdrawal. It’s not true. It’s like saying ‘Practice Makes Perfect.’ Only perfect practice makes perfect! Only effectively working through grief heals the deep wounds and creates balance in our lives once more. Effective grief work is not done alone. That is where regularly attending a grief support group is every valuable. It helps one to stay con-nected and to know we are not going crazy. It is our goal to resume the “Reach Out” sessions within two weeks of the ending of the social restrictions which means the opening of Fr Schneider Hall. For more informa-tion and for anyone who has suffered a loss of any one close to them, please call Dn. Mike Boyle at 484-336-9849.

BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL: Many thanks to those who

have made a pledge to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Mak-

ing a six-month pledge to the Appeal allows you to maxi-

mize the amount that you may give by making monthly

payments. For example, a $120 gift to the Appeal may be

setup with six $20 installments. Remember, every gift

counts, no matter how small. Your generosity funds the

annual budget for 6 important Diocesan ministries in our

area. You can make your gift online at FaithHopeCharity-

Seven Sisters Apostolate - Intercessory Prayer

for Fr. Marty

I recently became aware of this beautiful apostolate through my older sister and was prompted to begin a group at St. Columbkill. Please join me in the committed, prayerful sup-port of our dear pastor, Fr. Marty. I am inviting seven women (plus substitutes) to a generous commitment of intercessory prayer: the offering of at least one Holy Hour every week for a period of one year. Each woman would commit to the same day each week, thus covering a complete week. If you are inter-ested or have questions, please contact Stephanie Burrell @ [email protected].
