Sunday Gospel Reflections

Read Sunday’s gospel, Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48.

Gospel Summary

Jesus taught his disciples two different things in today’s gospel. First, when John came to him saying that someone, not one of them, was exorcizing demons in Jesus’ name, Jesus explained that anyone who was not against them was with them. If the person acted in Jesus’ name, he would not be capable of speaking out against him. The second teaching involved the way a person should respond to temptation. Not that Jesus proposed that people inflict wounds on themselves, but to make his point clearly, he suggested ridding ourselves of the parts of our bodies that lead us to sinfulness. Rather than commit sinful acts using our hands, eyes, feet, or ears, it would be better to enter heaven without those body parts than to use them sinfully and live in eternal damnation.

Reflection for Families

Love is one of those things that grows in itself. The more you give, the more it grows. There probably is no scientific way to measure why love works that way, but we just know it does. The same is true with acts of kindness—which in a way are the same thing as love. Like the person exorcizing demons in Jesus’ name, the more the better. That’s how Jesus saw it, even though the disciples in their human jealousy and desire for ownership thought the person was an intruder. Parents see this in their own lives and try to pass it on to our children. It’s hard to be mean to someone who just said, “I love you,” or gave you a hug, or climbed up on your lap. As we try to get along with each other and teach each other to get along with siblings, friends, and classmates, we will make significant progress by acting and reacting in kindness and love.

Bringing the Gospel into Your Family

Share your ideas with one another about who some of the people are in our society that give of themselves and their resources to further God’s Kingdom. It will probably be easy to come up with wealthy people who give large sums of money to charities, but what about the people who give other resources like time, energy, talent? Ask yourselves if there is more you can do as a family to bring kindness into someone else’s life.

Discussion Starters

1. Sometimes I am at first suspicious of people doing good things for someone else. One occasion that really surprised me was…

2. The disciples wanted to control the power they had been given by Jesus. What I have noticed about controlling people is…

3. One time when I was feeling left out, I was included by . . . I remember feeling…

FAMILY IN FAITH MASS

First Grade Parents and children

are invited to participate

in the St. Barnabas Family Mass

Sunday, September 30 10:00 AM

First graders have just begun the formal study of their faith and the long-term preparation, which will lead them to First

Eucharist in second grade.

At this liturgy, parents and children are invited to come forward to renew the promises made at Baptism. Children will receive a

special blessing to mark this step in their lives.

When you come to church, sit where

you would like.

OUR ALL SCHOOL MASS FOR THE FEAST OF THE GUARDIAN ANGELS WILL BE ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2012 AT 8:45. OUR COLLECTION WILL BE

FOR THE PEDIATRIC BRAIN TUMOR PROGRAM AT LURIE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK Saturday, October 6, 2012

4:00 pm Mass

Is anyone among you suffering? You should pray . . .

Is anyone among you sick? You should summon the presbyters of the church,

and they should pray over you and anoint you with oil in the name of the Lord,

and the prayer of faith will save you and the Lord will raise you up.

James 5:13-15

Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing, and is the prayer of Christ and his Church for

the physical and spiritual health of a sick person. This sacrament was formerly called Extreme

Unction or the Last Rites. In the past, the anointing was done near the time of death. The new

rites restore a proper balance between the pastoral ministry to the sick and the pastoral

ministry to the dying. Therefore, the sacrament can and should be given to anyone facing

serious illness or a serious medical event, such as surgery. The Sacrament of the Sick will be

celebrated at the 4 pm liturgy on Saturday, October 8th.

Who may be anointed?

1. A sick person ought to be anointed before s/he undergoes surgery, whether or not the

surgery is serious.

2. Persons with chronic illnesses.

3. Old persons, even if they are not suffering from a dangerous illness.

4. A sick child may be anointed in order to be comforted and uplifted by the sacrament.

5. Developmentally disabled persons.

Women's CRHP 2012 Please join us for Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) 2012, an

amazing retreat weekend for women of St. Barnabas, Saturday and Sunday, November 10-11.

What is CRHP?

CRHP is for women seeking spiritual renewal, an opportunity for parishioners to explore, strengthen, and revitalize their faith. Many attend because they feel something is missing from

their lives, others are in search of a spiritual awakening, all have a meaningful experience. The weekend is also a lot of fun, and a great opportunity to form meaningful and lasting

friendships. We like to call it a "soul spa."

For more information or to join us, please contact Ana Presentado at 773-779-6017 or [email protected].
