First Saturday Mass – August 1, 2015

Please join us for the monthly First Saturday Mass on August 1 at 8:30am.

Father Jerabek Away

A reminder that Father Jerabek will be away from Wednesday, July 29 till Tuesday, August 4. No Tuesday AM confessions while he is away.

Changes to the Confession Schedule

Effective immediately, there will no longer be confessions offered at 12:00noon on Saturdays. The other times – Tuesday at 7:00am and Saturday at 5:00pm – will continue as usual. Confessions are also always available by appointment, if needed – never hesitate to ask!

NEW! Milestone Anniversaries

If you celebrated, or will celebrate, a milestone wedding anniversary (25, 40, 50, or 60 years) in 2014, 2015, or 2016, please call the church office. We are in the process of planning an anniversary reception.

NEW! Publix Key Tags

Publix key tags will be available after the weekend Masses. If you shop there and swipe the tag during checkout, our parish school will receive a percentage of the total sale. This simple practice has produced several hundreds of dollars in income for our school each year.

REMINDER! Bathroom in Vestibule

All parishioners and visitors are asked to use only the new vestibule bathroom from now on, not the sacristy bathrooms. We now have the opportunity to recover a greater sense of reverence for the church altar (sanctuary) area!

Volleyball Camp

John Carroll Catholic High School Volleyball will be hosting a parent/player volleyball clinic on Saturday, August 15 from 1:00 to 3:00pm. This clinic is for any 3rd or 4th graders planning to play Toy Bowl volleyball this fall, along with their parents. The cost for the clinic is $10.00 per family. The clinic will be held in the John Carroll gymnasium and will be run by Coach Ginny McMillan and the varsity team. In 2014, the John Carroll varsity volleyball team won the ASHHA 6A State Championship. For more info or to register, please contact Ginny McMillan at [email protected].

NEW! School: Major Roof Repair/Replacement

The time has come to put a completely new roof on the older part of our school building and undertake various repairs on the roof of the newer part of the building. The initial estimates for this work run around $135,000. However, we are contacting other roofers for bids also. I am pleased to report that we have already received a $100,000 gift for this project; with additional fundraising and also a contribution from the parish savings account, we should be able to have this work done right away as soon as an acceptable bid comes in, approval from the Bishop is given, and the contract is signed. Please say a prayer for a successful outcome. – Father Jerabek

NEW! Knights of Columbus News

The Knights of Columbus will have a Fourth Degree meeting on Tuesday, July 28 at 7:00pm, in the Fireside Room.

Thank you, Josh! Best wishes and God bless!

Our Wonderful Catholic Faith

What Is Seminary Like?

Many people seem to have the idea that the seminary (a/k/a “priest school”) is like a monastic community in which seminarians take a vow of silence and go about in hooded robes praying all the time or quietly studying. Wouldn’t that be nice? Sometimes even we seminarians wish that this were the case! Unfortunately, a simple life of prayer and study cannot adequately prepare a person for the diocesan priesthood, so seminary faculty members strive to provide us with a well-rounded education in preparation for ministry. In fact, seminary is not all that different from any other private college setting, except that everyone is studying philosophy or theology and is praying to discern God’s calling in their lives on the path to diocesan priesthood. We have classes during the week, but we also have intramural sports teams and tournaments, daily Mass, communal Liturgy of the Hours, house meetings, and formation conferences.

The word “formation” indicates the process by which we “put off the old man, and put on Christ” (cf. Ephesians 4:22-24). As a seminarian, I am taught to be attentive to four main components (“pillars”) of formation, not only in my prayer life but in all of my activities throughout the day. These are “human formation,” by which I learn to become a mature person who engages well with others; “intellectual formation,” by which I learn those things which will be important to know in ministry; “spiritual formation,” which is the development of a mature prayer life; and “pastoral formation” in leading and evangelizing others. Seminarians are required to set personal goals for themselves in these four areas and to report on their progress to a “formation advisor,” whose role falls somewhere between that of an academic advisor and that of a personal trainer for priestly life. In addition, each seminarian has the benefit of working privately with a “spiritual director,” who counsels and guides him in the spiritual life. I can remember my first visit to the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, very well. I was a sophomore at Vanderbilt at the time, and not yet sure whether God was calling me to enter the seminary and to further discern his calling for me to be a diocesan priest. After visiting the school with some other young men my age, however, and seeing what life was like for a typical Josephinum seminarian, I felt much better equipped to determine what steps I was going to take after college. As I told a friend at the time, “I don’t yet know if God is calling me to be a priest, but at least now I know that if he is, I will enjoy being at seminary!” Less than two years later, I called Father Rick Chenault at the Vocations Office, and began the process of enrolling as a seminarian for the Diocese of Birmingham.
