The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
NOVEMBER 21, 2021 • John 18: 33b-37 SCOTT W. HAHN, PHD.
What’s the truth Jesus comes to bear witness to in this last Gospel of the Church’s year? It’s the truth that in Jesus God keeps the promise He made to David of an everlasting kingdom, of an heir who would be His Son, “the first born, highest of the kings of the earth” (see 2 Samuel 7:12–16; Psalm 89:27–38). Today’s Second Reading, taken from the Book of Revelation, quotes these promises and celebrates Jesus as “the faithful witness.” The reading hearkens back to Isaiah’s prophecy that the Messiah would “witness to the peoples” that God is renewing His “everlasting covenant” with David (see Isaiah 55:3–5). But as Jesus tells Pilate, there’s far more going on here than the restoration of a temporal monarchy. In the Revelation reading, Jesus calls Himself “the Alpha and the Omega,” the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. He’s applying to Himself a description that God uses to describe Himself in the Old Testament—the first and the last, the One who calls forth all generations (see Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12). “He has made the world,” today’s Psalm cries, and His dominion is over all creation (see also John 1:3; Colossians 1:16–17). In the vision of Daniel we hear in today’s First Reading, He comes on “the clouds of heaven”—another sign of His divinity—to be given “glory and kingship” forever over all nations and peoples. Christ is King and His kingdom, while not of this world, exists in this world in the Church. We are a royal people. We know we have been loved by Him and freed by His blood and transformed into “a kingdom, priests for his God and Father” (see also Exodus 19:6; 1 Peter 2:9). As a priestly people, we share in His sacrifice and in His witness to God’s everlasting covenant. We belong to His truth and listen to His voice, waiting for Him to come again amid the clouds.

Weekly Insight . . .
Jesus: King of My Life
My dear friends, every person should be able to state why Jesus is their King. To submit to the Kingship of Jesus is to accept
his sovereignty over our lives. Why should we accept Jesus as King of our life today and what does that mean?
Jesus is King of my life because…
I. HE IS THE GOD OF MY LIFE. God is King. “For the Lord Most High is awesome; He is a great King over all the earth.”
Psalm.7:2 Also, “For the Lord is the great God, And the great King above all gods.” Psalm.95:3
2. JESUS IS GOD: John 1:1 Declares it plainly that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God.” Again, in Hebrews 1:8, Prophetic passage proves that Jesus is God. “But about the Son he says, Your
throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.”
3. HE IS THE SOURCE OF LIFE: Please read [full text] Colossians 1:15-18. “For in him all things were created: things in
heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created
through him and for him.” So, He is The creator, The sustainer, The giver of life. Again, John 5:26, the Bible says, In Jesus is
life, “For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself.”
4. HE IS THE SAVIOR OF MY LIFE: In Luke 2:11 it was announced by the angel to Mary that, “There is born to you a
Savior whom you will call Jesus Christ the Lord.” 1 Timothy 4:10 says, “He is the Savior of all!” Again “Jesus was proved as
the Savior of mankind through His sinless life and vicarious death on the cross.” So, I need a savior for my life.
Jesus is King of our lives. His kingdom is open for everyone. Like any country we need our passport to legally enter it. So,
our passport will be the good works. It is only those whose names are in the book of life will be part of this kingdom. Let us
choose Jesus Christ as King today, surrender to him and do all he has commanded us to do.
Fr. Felix
Padre Felix
