John the Baptist in the Hidden Life of Jesus
The last week and a half of the season of Advent
presents a great opportunity to talk more about the
hidden life of Jesus because it highlights the signifi-
cant people in the life of the Son from the time before
Jesus’ birth. One such person who helped prepare
the human race for the incarnation of God the Son is
his earthly cousin, St. John the Baptist.
From the fall of man in the Garden of Eden to the
Incarnation of his Son, God prepared Israel for the
coming of a savior. He prepared the human race
remotely when he formed a people of faith through
Abraham, gave them the law through Moses, made
them a royal nation through David and spoke about
the coming of a savior through the prophets. He pre-
pared them directly through John the Baptist (CCC
522, 523). In fact John is often called the last proph-
et.
The Baptist is the immediate forerunner of the Savior.
They are connected. We examine the passage of
scripture this time of year when his mother Elizabeth,
in her sixth month of pregnancy, tells the Virgin Mary,
during her first month of pregnancy, that “As soon as I
heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my
womb leapt for joy.” He leaps because his Savior is
before him. As Advent comes to a close let us all
leap for joy in our examination of the hidden life of the
coming of our Savior Jesus by imitating the joy of
John the Baptist.

terrenal, San Juan Bautista.
Bautista.

O Come, O come Emmanuel!
During the final week of Advent, we become very eager for Christ-
mas. The whole church becomes eager.
We say special prayers for each day of the final week of Advent. In
the prayers, we ask Jesus to come soon. Beginning on December
17, at sunset, an “O Antiphon” is sung. For seven days, a different
O Antiphon is sung each evening. The O Antiphons begin
with titles of Jesus. The titles were chosen from the Bible.
If you know the song, “O come, O come, Emmanuel,” you know
the version:
December 17: “O Wisdom”
O come, Thou Wisdom from on high, who ord’rest all things
mightily; To us the path of knowledge show, And teach us in her
ways to go.
December 18: “O Adonai”
O come, O come, Thou Lord of might, Who to thy tribes on Sinai’s
height. In ancient times didst give the law, In cloud and majesty
and awe.
December 19: “O Flower of Jesse” (Jesse was King David’s father)
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse’s stem. From ev’ry foe deliver them
That trust thy might pow’r to save. And give them vict’ry o’er the
grave.
December 20: “O Key of David”
O come, Thou Key of David, come. And open wide our heav’nly home; Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to
misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel! Why do
you think Jesus is called these strange and marvelous names?
