A medium-sized stone quarry near Tylden is set to triple in size aer a dramatic Macedon Ranges council decision, which included unusually emotional councillors, two objectors wearing dressing gowns and another storming out during the debate.

Quarry operator Fulton Hogan’s application to expand was approved with a ra of revised conditions aer lengthy discussions, including claims that the council had brought the matter forward in an attempt to stymie opposition.

Chief executive Peter Johnston urged the gallery to remain respectful aer one objector

Tylden quarry digs deepertook aim at planners before leaving the chamber.

Another was warned by mayor Graham Hackett aer twice interjecting, while Cr John Connor delivered an impassioned defence of the company and its role as a corporate citizen.

Cr John Letchford pointed out the quarry had been operating for 90 years.

‘‘All of a sudden there’s issues with dust?’’ he said.

Council ocers had recommended that councillors endorse Fulton Hogan’s application to increase its footprint from eight to 28 hectares, and allow up to 500,000 tonnes of stone to be extracted per year.

An amended motion limiting extraction to 300,000 tonnes and restricting sales to between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday, was eventually passed by a vote of 4-3.

Objectors from Forest Street, Woodend, donned dressing gowns and put on a brief play to demonstrate their concerns about the proposed early hours and fears about Woodend becoming a ‘‘mining town’’.

Others spoke of trac problems and possible damage to roads caused by truck trac.

Representatives of multi-million dollar thoroughbred farm Woodside Park, which overlooks the quarry, told councillors quarry dust would render much of their land useless.

‘‘Our business is already aected,’’ owner Mark Rowsthorn said. ‘‘Visibility is oen poor, with dust blowing through the paddocks.

‘‘We can’t have young baby foals subjected to the kind of dust that will be emitted. It’s a matter of whether we can sell or move out.’’

A Fulton Hogan spokesman said the quarry’s dust suppression measures comply with strict requirements and were regularly inspected by the Environment Protection Authority.

‘‘To date, there’s been no complaints,’’ he said, adding the expansion was more about longevity than scale.

Cr Roger Jukes said he believed the amended motion was a ‘‘happy medium’’.

Dismay over long-term maintenance issues at Malmsbury railway station precinct will be raised with authorities after Macedon Ranges council lent its support to a community campaign.

Cr Jennifer Anderson said a lease of the station’s historic buildings to a private tenant had been recently renewed by owner VicTrack.

‘‘There are concerns amongst locals and the historic society that the buildings, previously leased to the same person, are not being well maintained,’’ she said in a notice of motion at last Wednesday’s council meeting.

‘‘Members of the society have been unsuccessfully trying to contact VicTrack and Heritage Victoria regarding how maintenance can be enforced.’’

Malmsbury Heritage Society secretary Mike Todd said the condition of the 1862 station and its surrounds had been a problem since the station was closed in 1978.

‘‘It’s a real blight on the town,’’ he said.Though closed, the station remains an

active stop on the Bendigo line. The society believes the buildings

could be upgraded for use as a station shelter or community hub.

A Heritage Victoria spokeswoman said maintenance of the precinct was an issue for its owner. VicTrack did not respond by deadline.

With Cr Henry McLaughlin absent, the mayor’s vote held sway but a notice of rescission was lodged the next morning.

is means the matter comes back to a future meeting.

Meanwhile, plans for an international equine centre in the municipality’s south-east will go to the next stage aer a majority of councillors conrmed their support for the project.

e council voted to pursue a partnership with the state government and industry to produce a full business case for the centre, despite the opposition of three councillors.

Macedon Ranges councillors will go back to the table over plans to sell a 2025squaremetre block of council-owned land at Gisborne to supermarket chain Aldi.

Aldi is preparing a planning application for a supermarket on land adjoining the Aitken Street block, and proposes to build and maintain a free public carpark there.

e site has long been earmarked as a future carpark by the council and a report to last Wednesday’s council meeting recommended

the sale for $600,000. But a revised motion by Cr Russell Mowatt to seek expressions of interest was passed by mayor Graham Hackett’s casting vote.

‘‘As a council, we need to be very even handed when it comes to selling public assets,’’ Cr Mowatt said. ‘‘I’m concerned there could be a perception in the community that we are dealing exclusively with Aldi.’’

Cr Roger Jukes argued the community and surrounding businesses would be the big winners if the supermarket took responsibility for a time-limited carpark.

Economic development and tourism manager Kylie Lethbridge told the meeting the proposed centre was ‘‘not just about horses, not just about dogs or anyone who might use it.’’

‘‘It’s about jobs,’’ she said, pointing to data that showed more than 50 per cent of the municipality’s residents worked outside the area.

With more than 90 per cent of 800 submitters expressing support, Cr John Connor said he was surprised there was opposition to the proposed project.

Sunbury United Cricket Club has asked Hume council for help to beef up security at Langama Park aer two recent break-ins.

President Chris Linton said members were heartbroken aer the club rooms were hit by thieves on March 20 and again on March 21.

He said a television and drinks valued at $1500 had been taken, while repairs to locks and doors would cost ‘‘thousands’’.

“To have this happen right as we were getting ready to wrap up for the year, it’s just heartbreaking,’’ Linton said.

He said thieves broke into the club’s canteen on the Sunday night, taking drinks and personal items le in change rooms aer grand nals played earlier that day.

e club reported the incident on Monday, but the thieves returned later that evening, badly damaging doors and taking a television.

Linton said the club was seeking help to install a security door at the entry of the council-owned building.

‘‘We’re a volunteer organisation and we run everything as tight as we can,’’ he said. ‘‘is sort of thing is just a real kick in the guts.’’

Council’s city infrastructure director Peter Waite said he would work with the club to resolve the issues. He said the council had boosted security at a number of sites.

‘‘We are extremely disappointed that there has been an increase in break-ins and vandalism at sporting clubs in Sunbury,’’ he said.

If you have information about the break-ins, call Sunbury police: 9744 8111.

Event spokesman David Ellis says it’s a great way to involve Windarring clients, who will wave cars on with ags as the rally drives past.

‘‘ey’re very excited … it’s wonderful,’’ he says. ‘‘Quite a few of them really love their cars and were very keen to be involved.’’

Cars entered for this year’s tour will park in the Aitken Street service road from 7.30am before leaving Old Gisborne Courthouse at 9am. e tour will pass through Riddells Creek,

Cars will also stop at the Calder Freeway service road near Malmsbury about 4pm.

e procession will include about 20 Morgan sports cars, this year’s feature marque.

Also featured will be an old Bentley with handcraed corrugated iron mud guards.

Labor MPs have warned that Sunbury and Macedon Ranges residents being treated for serious illnesses, including cancer, could face large bills for MRIs, X-rays and mammograms under changes to the Medicare benets schedule (MBS).

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell and Opposition health spokeswoman Catherine King discussed federal cuts during a visit to Sunbury’s new Lake Imaging clinic last week.

e two Labor MPs said many clinics would be forced to charge patients for scans and tests that were previously bulk-billed.

Figures released by the Australian Diagnostic Imaging Association show upfront fees could range from $93 for an X-ray to $396 for a CAT scan, and up to $1000 for a positron emission tomograph (PET) scan.

‘‘A patient diagnosed with melanoma, who was previously bulk-billed, could face upfront costs of about $1500 and still be le with out-of-pocket costs of up to $400 aer receiving their Medicare rebates,’’ Mr Mitchell and Ms King said in a statement.

Health Minister Sussan Ley has previously said items removed as part of the rst stage of MBS reforms no longer represented ‘‘clinical best practice’’.

‘‘Reasons range from more clinically appropriate and/or ecient technologies and procedures already listed on the MBS, through to patient safety, unnecessary doubling-up of item claims and decreasing usage,’’ she said.

Health bills could rise: MPs

Pap test rates fallingBy Matt Crossman

Almost half of all Hume women are not having regular pap tests, putting them at greater risk of cervical cancer.

Data released by the state government last week revealed that Hume had the fourth-lowest screening rate in the state, at 52.2 per cent, down from 53.5 per cent the previous year.

e Victorian Cervical Cytology Registry’s annual report also shows 68.7 per cent of women in the Macedon Ranges have undergone a pap test in the past two years (down from 69.5 per cent).

language issues, lack of information about the tests, and women being busy and forgetting when their next test is due.

‘‘Women cannot aord to become complacent,’’ she said. ‘‘If you’re overdue, it’s vital that you book in.’’

Macedon Ranges Health nurse Louise Beer said national guidelines recommended that all women aged 18-70 who had ever been sexually active have a pap test every two years. Regular tests are recommended even aer the HPV vaccine.

PapScreen Victoria’s website lists local providers: www.papscreen.org.au

An overall decline in numbers of women aged 20-29 being tested regularly is also a reason for concern, with statewide rates falling to less than 50 per cent.

PapScreen Victoria manager Hiranthi Perrera said not screening regularly was the biggest risk factor for cervical cancer.

‘‘We know that nearly 80 per cent of women diagnosed with cervical cancer had either never had a pap test or had let their screening lapse,’’ she said.

Ms Perrera said a lack of bulk-billing operators may be a factor in Hume’s low screening rates, along with cultural and

e shock death of a friend was the catalyst for a Sunbury photographer to design a project that will help mental health charities.

Matt Gleeson, who has taken tens of thousands of pictures at punk rock shows and promo shoots over the past few years, will release his new coee table book, Passion 4 Punk, at North Melbourne’s Last Chance Rock N Roll Bar on April 16.

‘‘My friend’s death last year hit me particularly hard,’’ Gleeson says.

‘‘You start to ask what can you do in response to that. is is what I came up with.’’

Nine bands and a crowd of close to 100 people got together in October to raise almost $2000 for printing costs, meaning 100 per cent of the initial print run will go to charities.

News Fire impact hitsBy Matt Crossman

As many as 10 families whose houses were destroyed or damaged during last October’s bushre near Lanceeld are receiving weekly visits from a case worker, as recovery eorts continue.

Spearheaded by Macedon Ranges council and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), eorts to help the community bounce back from the devastating blaze include oers of counselling, which have been taken up by more than 25 people.

Lanceeld Neighbourhood House co-ordinator and recovery committee member Vivien Philpotts said, while a few people may still be feeling frustrated, ‘‘the reality is the support has generally been amazing’’.

‘‘ere’s been incredible support, both from the council and state government,’’ she said.

Ms Philpotts said the swi reaction of the state government and DELWP had been important, especially in light of the cause of the blaze.

In November, an inquiry found the 266-hectare planned burn that ignited

on September 30 had been “inadequately resourced” from the start. It broke containment lines on October 3 and again on October 6.

Almost 3000 hectares were eventually engulfed. Four houses, 25 sheds and many kilometres of fencing were destroyed.

A progress report last month found that one recommendation and three commitments from the inquiry had already been delivered, with the rest on track, most of which have a due date of July this year.

A council spokeswoman said planning and building processes had been streamlined for aected landholders. Asbestos clean-ups have happened at 11 properties and 86 of 130kilometres of fencing has been replaced, while almost three million litres of water has replenished storages for 61 landholders.

Ms Philpotts said anyone concerned about mental health should contact a recovery ocer immediately.

‘‘For some people, the long term eects – the emotional stu – hasn’t hit home until more recently.

‘‘People shouldn’t underestimate how they’re feeling. ey may be crying or getting angry more than they used to, but help is available.’’

This brick veneer, on about 1600 square metres in a quiet cul-de-sac within a walk of Romsey town centre, has retained the internal look of its era: exposed bricks, slate ooring, turned-timber rails dividing lounge room from entry hall and timber-trimmed cabinetry. First-time buyers, retirees and investors will be tempted by its overall appeal and the price point. Three big bedrooms all have wardrobes and the main has an en suite. There’s a spacious, carpeted lounge room, and a family-meals space next to the kitchen. A verandah at the front is matched by a large, covered pergola at the back, both excellent for relaxation. The backyard is huge and gardens are pretty. An integrated double carport and a shed/workshop are further drawcards.

This large, well-presented house in prestigious Rolling Meadows estate sits on about 0.89 hectares and its dove-grey wall paint and grey carpet create a peaceful and harmonious feel. Three bay windows and internal fretwork touch on the Victoriana facade, while three separate living zones (rumpus, lounge-dining, family-meals) provide abundant space to spread out. There are four large bedrooms, three with built-in wardrobes, and the main has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite with corner tub and dual vanity basins. The kitchen has a stack of timber cupboards, an island bench, dishwasher and 900mm cooker. There’s a large machinery shed/workshop with power connection and drive-through access to the back gardens. Other features are ducted cooling and heating, solar panels, gas-boosted solar hot water, a 27,000-litre water tank and a remote-controlled double garage. It’s all within a short drive of schools, the town centre, freeway access and train station.

Pretty as a picture, this classic Victorian cottage on about 1011 square metres combines the best of period features with contemporary decor. Polished oorboards, timber-lined ceilings, rosettes, deep skirts and cornices and a corbelled arch are complemented by a grey and white palette and new grey carpet. Three bedrooms ank a traditional central hallway and share an updated bathroom which adjoins a laundry at the rear. A charming living area connects with an updated, modern-country kitchen with white cabinetry and wooden benchtops, corner pantry and stainless-steel underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Gas central heating and a split-system provide climate control, and the living room has double doors opening to a covered deck. A driveway leads to a big shed with twin roller doors, workshop space, concrete oor and power connection. The property is a short stroll of the town centre, schools, hospital and Jean Haynes Park.

This renovated, north-facing house has four bedrooms, three with built-in wardrobes, and the main with a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite. There’s a big, separate lounge room, a new family-meals zone and a new bathroom. The updated modern kitchen is a combination of whites and charcoals and includes stone benchtops and new appliances. There’s a Laserlite-covered deck overlooking the big backyard, which has enough room to kick the footy. The property, which is on about 2000 square metres, is only a few minutes from Woodend township and fast rail to the city.

A ne example of an older-style country homestead with a classic wrap-around verandah, Avignon has been beautifully renovated through the preservation of original features and a dab hand in blending contemporary trappings.

On about 16.18 hectares, taking in box seat views of Hanging Rock, the hydronically heated house has a mix of original Baltic and jarrah oorboards, replaces and ve charming-to-the-max bedrooms, while kitchen and bathrooms are as unique as they are period-friendly.

The bedrooms, two with wardrobes,

share two bathrooms – one set up with a European laundry. The main bathroom is gorgeous, with the piece de resistance a freestanding copper tub beneath a designer light tting. There’s also a pedestal basin and period-betting tapware.

A large library-cum-hobby room-cum-study has customised bookshelves (storage throughout is cleverly executed) and could easily be a sixth bedroom. The second living space is a great room, with one of the many designer light ttings, an inset wood heater (period-style surround), and no less than

ve sets of french doors onto verandahs. The open-plan dining zone is a third living space, one that has a wood heater, and a bank of casement windows acting as a picture gallery of ‘the Rock’.

A hefty ceiling beam crowns the kitchen, where there’s a French-imported linen lighttting above a marble/jarrah island bench, a wonderful Lacanche cooker, a tall glass-fronted display cupboard and a dishwasher.

Edged with trimmed hedging and a velvety lawn, the area for the in-ground, solar-heated saltwater pool has a feel of the

Other outbuildings include cute shedding – an old shearing shed now lined and powered for multiple uses, and a stable and chook house. A very pretty lake has a jetty, and there’s a dam and an excellent bore to support hobby farming.

This outstanding property has freeway access close by, which will ensure arrival at the city within an hour.

“RAIN, RAIN STAY AROUND!”It has been lovely to hear rain on the roof and seea faint tinge of green return to parched gardens andlawns.

February was such a dry month and our gardenshave struggled to survive. Farmers have watchedtheir dams drop in level and are feeding their stockat great expense – it has been a time of concern formany.

Those who are selling their properties feel quitestressed as their gardens turn to dust and their grassturn brown. Please remember that everyone is in thesame situation and buyers do understand - after all, their gardens are also suffering.suffering.suf

Those amongst you who are fortunate enough tohave a bore or several rain water tanks can keepgardens and grass looking lush. The rest of us do thebest we can, being mindful that water is a preciouscommodity and is not in plentiful supply. Mulch or tanbark is a wonderful thing when selling! The soil willretain more moisture if liberally covered with mulch ortan bark. Save water from showers, baths, washingup – your garden will thank you.

In the meantime, “rain, rain stay around” or we will allneed to perform a “rain dance” in our backyard!

There’s a new release of 10 blocks at the highly sought-after Rangeview estate in Riddells Creek.

Patrick Franklin, of First National Real Estate L.J.Whorlow, says buyer interest is very high, and he expects tough competition from people wanting to secure a block.

“I had two gentlemen say to me that they will be sleeping out at the site to make sure they get the block they want,” he says.

Registration is April 3 at noon. A marquee will be set up and real estate agents will be out in force from 11am to answer questions.

“There’s no auction,” says Mr Franklin. “It’s rst in, best dressed. Block prices start from $249,000 and range (in size) from 644 to 1076 square metres.”

Blocks can be secured on the day with a $1000 deposit and the balance of the purchase price within 21 days of the registration of its title.

“Construction is estimated to begin in four to six weeks, and last for roughly six months,” says Mr Franklin.

All blocks are fully serviced and have NBN access and generous frontages.

“The estate is near parks, with kids’ playgrounds and views of the Macedon Ranges, all within walking distance of public transport, cafes, restaurants, a primary school and kindergartens.”

There are contracts and plans for subdivision. Details at the First National Real Estate L.J. Whorlow Sunbury ofce.

First National Real Estate L.J. Whorlow, 46 Evans Street, Sunbury. Open: 9am-5.30pm Monday-Friday and Saturday 9am-4pm. Inquiries: 9740 9000 or www.sunburyrealestate.com.au

33 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 29, 2016

SPORTA bit of badminton, with tea and a chatWhile many people are at work or school, a group of Sunbury women are slugging it out on the badminton court.

e Sunbury Ladies Badminton Club has been hosting games for more than 30 years on Monday and ursday mornings at Boardman Stadium.

Cheryl Ward counts 50 members at present aer a drop-o in numbers in recent years.

e club is keen to get more players involved, and Ms Ward says both social and competition players are needed, with all women welcome to play.

“Beginners are most welcome and we have racquets and basic coaching available,” Ward says. “Competition is on Mondays, while on

ursdays it’s more social with dierent levels on each court.”

e club also has child-minding facilities, which means mothers can play during the season.

But it isn’t just about the badminton; the club’s social life plays a big part in its appeal.

“We go out for lunch once a month and it’s about having a bit of fun together,” Ward says.

“We also enjoy a morning tea between games.”

For those wanting to try out badminton, the rst session is free.

Sunbury Soball Association will host the Victorian under-19 championships in April.

e championships, on April 16 and 17, will be the rst of any kind held at the Goonawarra diamonds and they’re a big boost for the club.

Secretary Catherine Kelly said it was the rst time the club had seriously applied to host a major event and it was thrilled to be selected.

She said the club hoped it would help strengthen the local association, and she encouraged players to look at trying out for state teams.

“It’s massive for our club,” she said. “It’ll be a full weekend event and we’re hoping people will come down to see teams from across the state.

“It gives further exposure to our club and shows our junior players what can be achieved.

“Hume council is right behind this and is supporting the competition. We’d like to host a major competition every year.”

Even though it’s hosting the championships, Sunbury will not eld its own under-19 team in the event.

“We’re putting a team in the under-15 state championships, which are coming up, and we’re having a team in the open championships next week,” Kelly said

Meanwhile, Sherwood Knights won three of the four grand nals in the association’s local competition, under-13, under-17 and men’s competitions.

Jackson Panthers won the women’s competition.

State titlesinspiring for host club

Sunbury’s incredible bowls season has continued, with the women’s team earning promotion to the premier division of Bowls Victoria’s midweek competition.

e team nished second on the division 1 ladder and needed to beat Waverley Golf to earn promotion.

And it did just that, winning two of the three rinks to take the match 62-53.

Sunbury’s Dave Glennon said it was good to see the women’s side back in the top division.

“It caps o a really good year for the club,” he said.

“ey got relegated two or three seasons ago and have been working hard since then to get back up.”

With promotion already secured, Sunbury played Edithvale (also promoted to premier division) for the division 1 premiership.

It ended in another win for Sunbury, which controlled the match almost from the start.

Sunbury led 16-10 aer 15 ends and had extended that to 30-14 aer 24 ends. It continued to put on the pressure and led 50-17 aer 34 ends, before winning 74-46.

e women’s win came aer the club’s Saturday division 2, section 2 men’s pennant side won its division to earn promotion to division 1.

One of Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s longest-serving coaches has stepped aside. Jason King, who coached Sunbury-based club Asheld for 11 seasons, has decided not to go on with it next summer.

He said it was time to give someone else a go to help take the club to the next level.

“It’s been 11 years and it’s a good time to step down,” he said.

“We’re aer someone to take the club into the next phase of development.

“It’s exciting where the club can go in the future.”

Aer initially looking to coach for one year, King said there was much to be proud of about his time in charge.

“Aer the rst few weeks I said I’d only coach for a year,” he said.

Jason King has stood down as coach of Asheld. (Wayne Hawkins)

King ends his reign

“When I started we were bankrupt, had no players and no volunteers. e proudest thing is seeing how far the club has come in that time.

“It’s been fantastic to see the improvement, on and o the eld.”

Asheld won two premierships and three T20 titles during King’s reign.

e club nished seventh on the B-grade ladder, with three wins for the year but clinched the division 2 title at the Cricket Willow Region T20 nals in January.

King won both the aggregate and average batting awards in the B-grade competition with his 427 runs at 42.70.

He intends to keep playing a major role at Asheld.

“I’m denitely still going to play,” he said. “It might make me a better player only having to focus on playing.

“I’m looking to work more on the o-eld side of things, getting more club functions going and bringing people here.”

e hunt for a new coach has started already.

e job has been advertised and King says Asheld wants someone with experience.

“We’re aer a captain-coach with experience to take the young group forward,” he said.

“It would be good for the players to get a point of view from someone else. We’re preferably looking for a player, so they can help out on the eld, too.”

East Sunbury and Rupertswood are also on the hunt for new coaches.

34 SUNBURY & MACEDON RANGES STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 29, 2016

Hunt on for new blood as Lions’ den depletedWith the season fast approaching, Sunbury Lions are desperately seeking players for its under-18.5 team.

e Ballarat Football League club currently has about 15 under-18.5 players set to play regularly this season.

Lions’ president John Sanderson said the club is really struggling to attract players in this age group.

“Twenty-four players would be ideal, as it will allow for injuries,” he said. “We lost 17 players to the Calder Cannons and other clubs in the o-season, which hurts us massively.

“We normally expect to pick some players up from under-16s, but we haven’t had that this year.”

Six Lions’ players have moved into the Calder Cannons squad, but only one or two of these are expected to play for the Lions each week.

Sanderson said the club was looking at alternatives if it can’t get the required number of players. He said the club was aer players of any skill level.

“We will have to try and get some of the under-16s to play up to ll the team,” he said.

“We’ve also got people talking to other clubs, which might have too many under-18.5s players, and seeing if we can get players on

permits for some weeks. Normally, we like to promote under-18.5s to the senior team, if their form warrants it. But if we don’t have the numbers we won’t be able to do that.”

e Lions will play eight games at home, two each at Melton and Bacchus Marsh, and only four games at Ballarat. Players will train with the senior team on Tuesday and ursday nights.

e club has appointed the experienced Wayne Meacham as coach of the under-18.5s. Meacham previously coached Sunbury Kangaroos to two successive reserves premierships.

“On the coaching side of things, we are well in front,” Sanderson said.

Several BFL clubs are facing a shortage of players and the Lions are among those to receive exceptions to play players qualifying for under-19s. Sanderson said, of the three Lions’ players this would aect, two of them are part of the Cannons squad.

AFL Goldelds commercial and regional operations manager Aaron Nunn said several clubs would use age exemptions this year.

Kyneton is hoping more depth in its squad will help it match the stronger teams in Bendigo Football League.

e Tigers nished sixth last season aer being knocked out in the rst week of nals, and coach Luke Beattie said boosting the squad in the o-season was a key.

“One of the strategies was to have greater depth in the 22 and further,” Beattie said. “We had ve or six really top end players, which is good.

“But, towards the bottom of the team, we seemed to drop away. I think we’ve had some great development over the o-season and have more depth in both our ones and twos.

“We’ll also have a little bit of a dierent game structure, and the players’ tness has improved.”

e Tigers initially lost more players than they gained.

“I guess at the start we thought we were losing players consistently,” Beattie said.

“e likes of Alik Magin, Jordan Collins, Jake Hyland, Joel Stevenson and Ben Weightman … all le the club.

“e tide then turned, and we’ve got some good people into the club.”

Among newcomers are Hamish and Joshua Govan, Ethan Foreman, Jarrod Andreatta, Nick Higginson, Jarrod Witnish, Daniel Davie, Jonno Nash and Leigh Warne.

Former Kyneton coach and AFL player Nathan ompson returned to the club aer his family moved back to the area.

“We’re good mates, and he has been outstanding support,” Beattie said. “He has assisted in the recruitment and been instrumental in developing the list, along with football manager Rick Egan.

“To have his experience and friendship is a great thing, along with his family back at the club.”

Just when the Tigers thought their recruiting was over, a call came in from Weightman saying he, too, was back.

Beattie coached the side from round 15 last year aer the club sacked Mark Adamson. A Tigers’ premiership player, Beattie has previously coached Daylesford and was assistant coach in Sunbury Lions’ 2012 premiership.

Tide turns for Tigers

By Tara Murray

Just days aer the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand nal nished in a tie it seemed somewhat tting that the competition’s Sullivan Medal also ended in a tie.

e best and fairest medal was shared between Diggers Rest Bulla’s Rhys Berry, Sunbury captain Jason McGann and Romsey’s Ben Way – all on 14 votes. So close was the count, another two players – the Burras’ Darren Quarrell and Gisborne’s Tahir Afridi – nished a further vote back on 13.

It’s the rst three-way tie for the medal since 2005-06.

Berry, showing his side’s move from B grade to the McIntyre Cup competition was no problem, led the count early pulling

three votes in four of the rst ve rounds. He nished the season with 40 wickets and averaged 18 with the bat.

He and Afridi, who scored two votes in each of his rst four games, were the early leaders.

McGann, who won the medal in 2013-14, and Way, who moved across from Premier Cricket club Melbourne in the o-season, scored maximum votes in three games late in the count to join Berry at the top of the count.

McGann, who won this season’s McIntyre Cup aggregate award, averaged 32 with the bat and took 29 wickets.

Way only played in eight games for the year, averaging 48 with the bat and taking 12 wickets.

Sunbury United’s Ryan Billinghurst nished sixth in the count on nine votes with Sunbury’s

Heath Boey and Woodend’s Josh Eastley each getting eight votes.

e top ve vote getters were all named in the GDCA team of the year.

ey were joined by Gisborne’s Simon Harman and Brook Grumont, Woodend duo Adam Johnstone and Warren Else, Sunbury United’s Ryan Billinghurst and Lance Watts, and Romsey’s Paul Wilkinson.

In other awards, Billinghurst took out the batting average award aer making 364 runs at an average of 33.09.

Afridi won the bowling award aer taking 42 wickets at an average of 10 during the regular season.

In the B-grade competition, Jason King won the batting and overall aggregate awards. e Asheld skipper made 427 runs at an average of 42.70.
