Property experts believe the record $40 million sale of a major Sunbury shopping centre to private investors is a sign people are waking up to opportunities in the town.

As reported by Star Weekly online, settlement on the unadvertised 3.1-hectare Sunbury Central site, which includes Big W and Readings Cinemas, was reached last week.

It’s believed to be the largest-ever single commercial property transaction in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges.

A 206-hectare residential site, south of Sunbury, was sold to Chinese investors for $40 million in June.

Glenn Ingram, director of former Sunbury Central and owner of Ingram Property Group, said the latest sale, to Australian investors, was a big win for the town.

‘‘�is certainly strengthens the capital values within the town centre for a long time,’’ he said.

Mr Ingram, who developed the centre that opened in 2000, said the sale and recent developments by major corporations, such as Villawood and Australand, re�ected growing interest in the area.

‘‘�e strength of the property indicates that there are plenty of people now who are seeing Sunbury as a regional base.’’

Mr Ingram said he believed Sunbury had been misunderstood in terms of the strength of its catchment and the way it attracted people from the Macedon Ranges.

‘‘What we know from our retail involvement in Sunbury is that we don’t see signi�cant visitation from residents of Coolaroo or Broadmeadows …

when we do surveys, we generally get 20-30 per cent of people from Macedon Ranges postcodes.

‘‘We are putting three national tenants in the [former McKinnons Electrical site], who don’t currently have a presence in Sunbury.

‘‘�ey’re tenants who are going to attract that broader community … they will come from Gisborne, Clarke�eld, Romsey, and so on. And when they do, they will bring other expenditure with them, which creates more jobs in the town, which creates better opportunities and the need for more infrastructure.’’

Mr Ingram, whose group has many other interests in the area, said he is proud of what Sunbury Central achieved.

‘‘I think you can argue pretty solidly that Sunbury Central created not just job opportunities but opportunities for every other retailer in Sunbury.’’

JLL Australia retail investments director Stephen Bolton said the sale spoke volumes about what’s going on in the area.

‘‘People have been eyeing o� Sunbury for some time, and things like the electri�cation of the train line have made it even more attractive,’’ he said.

Sunbury-based Hume councillor Jack Medcra� said it was con�rmation that investors saw Sunbury as the centrepiece of the next major growth area.

‘‘You can bet others will follow.’’

Nine people have been charged with drug o�ences a�er a series of raids at Sunbury and Romsey.

Cannabis, ecstasy, steroids, prescription drugs, methylamphetamine and precursor chemicals were seized a�er police entered nine houses across the two towns at 6.30am on �ursday.

Police said illegal �reworks, stolen goods and a large quantity of cash were also found.

�is follows major raids carried out in the towns in November last year.

Acting Detective Sergeant Anthony Gasparini said the ongoing Operation Zurla

sought to smash drug manufacturing and tra�cking in the area.

Police from the divisional response unit, Embona taskforce, Hume crime investigation unit, the clandestine laboratory unit, dog squad and Sunbury and Romsey police were involved in the raids.

‘‘We know the current ice epidemic has caused signi�cant harm and a negative impact to our local communities,’’ Detective Sergeant Gasparini said.

He said drugs are o�en a major driver of other crimes, such as assaults and robberies, and he urged anyone with knowledge about those involved in illegal drugs to contact police. ‘‘If there are people who have information,

then we encourage them to come forward,’’ Detective Sergeant Gasparini said.

‘‘Police will not tolerate these o�ences, and will continue to target those who engage in this type of criminal behaviour.’’

�ose charged include Sunbury men aged 48, 20, 26, 29 and 36, a Romsey man aged 35 and Sunbury women aged 45, 31 and 23.

In June, Star Weekly reported that a police crackdown on drugs was bearing fruit, with the number of use and possession o�ences up 67 per cent on last year.

Crime Statistics Agency �gures show drug use and possession o�ences for the year till March 31 rose from 462 to 773. Drug dealing and tra�cking crimes went from 97 to 149.

A group of Sunbury residents is urging Hume council to keep a brick water fountain in the town’s Village Green that some people consider an eyesore.

�e fountain, unveiled in 1983, could be replaced by in-ground jets to create a summer play area for children as part of plans to revitalise the area.

But life-long Sunbury resident Katherine Michell argues the steeped fountain should not be demolished. She’s among those who believe the council should instead ‘‘refresh’’

it by rendering the ageing bricks. An online petition created by Ms Michell last week has already been signed by 479 people.

‘‘�ere was a lot of discussion about it on Facebook,’’ she said.

‘‘People were saying, ‘we can’t do anything about it’ but I think we should at least try. I was born nearby in Brook Street … we’ve walked past it pretty much every day for my whole life.’’

Ms Michell, who plans to keep the petition going for another week or so before presenting

it to the council, said a water play area could create problems with busy roads nearby. Some Facebook users said the fountain was ugly.

Council acting city infrastructure director David Fricke said a �nal decision on the fountain’s fate had not been made.

‘‘Council will consider the comments of Sunbury residents before it makes a decision,’’ he said.

Hume rangers have had threatening phone calls, emails and letters, been abused during court hearings, and one o�cer’s name and workplace was made public and her children threatened, a�er being called out to inspect restricted breed dogs.

In a submission to the parliamentary inquiry into the e�ectiveness of Victoria’s restricted dog breed legislation, the dangers for local laws o�cers were made plain.

Changes were made to the Domestic Animal Act in 2011 that ordered councils to seize and put down unregistered restricted breed dogs.

Since then, the council has received more than 170 tip-o�s about unregistered dangerous dogs, and its authorised o�cers have visited 60 properties to follow-up claims.

Hume’s submission noted that 41 of these properties were considered high-risk, and required police to attend. Two cases required members of the Santiago Taskforce, which was formed in 2008 a�er a series of non-fatal shootings in the northern suburbs.

It stated that a�er the council successfully quashed a VCAT appeal from a resident not to have a six-year-old American Sta�ordshire terrier and bulldog-cross registered as a restricted breed, local laws o�cers became targets of threats from animal advocates.

O�cers received threats via social media, emails, letters and phone calls and were verbally abused while driving council-branded cars. One driver tried running an o�cer o� the road, and another was called a “dog killer” while sitting at tra�c lights.

O�cers at VCAT hearings have been confronted by supporters of dog owners, and verbally abused. On several occasions, the council has been forced to hire protective service o�cers to escort council sta� to and from their vehicles.

In a letter written by councillor Geo� Porter late in 2012, he requested an urgent meeting with then agriculture minister Peter Walsh to re�ne the legislation.

�e council wants VCAT proceedings to be held in closed court sessions, and the onus of proof to be placed on the dog owner to prove a dog isn’t a restricted breed, rather than the council.

Hume’s parks manager Danny Eaton said the council’s authorised o�cers deal with restricted breed dogs with total professionalism, “but it has been very stressful for them”.

Macedon Ranges residents are urged to act now to prevent a repeat of the wasp crisis that made outdoor get-togethers a nightmare last summer.

People are urged to keep an eye out for nests on their properties, as council’s community safety manager Anne-Louise Lindner said queens would create new nests and increase populations once spring begins.

As reported by Star Weekly, massive Star Weekly, massive Star Weeklynumbers of European wasps were reported across the area last summer, leading to increases in people presenting to doctors and hospital with stings.

Woodend, Hanging Rock, Kyneton, Lance�eld, Malmsbury and Romsey were among the hot-spots for wasp activity.

�e council recommends residents pay particular attention to sheltered areas around their properties, trimming back bushes and overhanging branches near buildings and fences, and covering rubbish and compost bins.

‘‘If you suspect that there is a wasp nest … try to identify where it is located by looking for a stream of wasps �ying in and around a particular site.”

European wasps were introduced to Australia in the 1950s and �rst reported in Victoria in 1977. A lack of predators and good weather conditions has led to numbers soaring in recent years. Wasps can sting multiple times and bites to the throat can be fatal. Report nests on public land on 5422 0333.

�e enduring mystery and appeal of one of Australia’s most famous �lms is explored as part of an innovative online exhibition compiled by the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA).

Featuring never-before-seen footage, trailers, international posters, 360-degree photography of original costumes and interviews with cast and crew, the Picnic at Hanging Rock exhibition celebrates the popular Peter Weir �lm, which premiered 40 years ago this month.

Curator Belinda Hunt told Star Weekly that the permanent exhibition was part of a new direction for the NFSA, and a way of sharing its collections with the world.

Ms Hunt said the exhibition went far beyond clips and out-takes from the �lm.

‘‘�ere’s a lot from the production side of things, but also lots of oral interviews, so you get everybody’s memories as well.’’

She said the lasting appeal of the �lm, and the 1967 Joan Lindsay novel on which it was based, was much like the Rock itself … steeped in mystery.

‘‘You can watch it again and again and you still can’t work it out. At the same time, the whole journey of going alone and �nding new clues is delicious. I must have watched it 20 times myself.’’

Anne-Louise Lambert, who played the �lm role of Miranda, said the �lm was a great part of Australia’s cultural and social history.

‘‘For people to actually be able to see these costumes and objects is incredibly important,’’ she said. ‘‘�e work of the NFSA is extremely important.

“I’m happy that these items are well looked a�er and that others will get to enjoy them.’’

Crash witness pleaPolice are calling for witnesses after a man died in a crash near Hesket. They said the man was travelling on Romsey-Woodend Road about 10 kilometres west of Romsey when the car left the road and crashed into a tree about 9.30am last Tuesday. The man, who was trapped in the vehicle, died at the scene. He was the only person in the car. Investigators want to speak to a female motorist, believed to be aged in her 40s, who spoke to police at the scene.

A Sunbury nurse who underwent a lumpectomy, double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, a�er being diagnosed with breast cancer, has urged women to make sure they are screened at least every two years.

Geraldine Wilson said she had waited six years between breast screens when she received the dreaded news in late 2007.

Data released last week revealed that less than 60 per cent of women aged 50-69 in the Sunbury and Macedon electorates had been tested by BreastScreen Victoria between 2012 and 2014.

Ms Wilson warned that no woman could a�ord to put it o�.

‘‘My journey, although I’m surviving, might have been a lot easier had I gone in early,’’ she said. ‘‘I’d had a breast reduction, so I had lumpy breasts anyway. I went to the doctor and he said ‘Geri, you need to have a test done’.

‘‘�at was in February. Because I’m a nurse and I was working at the Northern [hospital], I was just too busy and thought I’ll let it go, there’s nothing there. I eventually went and had the mammogram that September.’’

To her horror, Ms Wilson was diagnosed with cancer, which, by the time of her operation, had progressed from level one to level three.

�is was just the beginning of what has been a long and arduous process.

‘‘Because it was a level three cancer, I was told to have a mastectomy,’’ she said. ‘‘I chose to have a double.’’

Ms Wilson, who is now in remission, said the help of support services, including counsellors, had been crucial to her recovery.

‘‘Some people think they have to do this journey themselves, and just give up,’’ she said. ‘‘�ose support people are the ones who make

you think, yes I can do this, yes I can survive. If you know where to look, there’s wonderful support. I can’t stress enough how important those people are.’’

Parliamentary health secretary and Macedon MP Mary-Anne �omas said a regular breast screen, at least every two years, was the best way

to �nd cancer early, with early diagnosis the key to survival.

‘‘�is data reminds us that we have more to do to raise awareness of the importance of regular breast screening,’’ Ms �omas said.

Residents who fought o� plans for a service station development at Woodend will take their battle to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Food and petrol giant Coles Express last week con�rmed it will appeal Macedon Ranges council’s decision to reject its application for a servo at 59 High Street.

In May, councillors went against o�cers’ advice, having heard objections relating to tra�c, the proposed size of the development and its potential a�ect on town character.

A Coles spokeswoman said last week the company wanted to o�er residents and passers-by more choice for fuel.

‘‘Coles Express has been working extensively with council, VicRoads and VicTrack to ensure we meet the needs of residents and the development is sympathetic to the local area,’’ she said.

‘‘Coles Express will also continue to work with VicRoads to ensure safe vehicle access to and from the site, and considerable road and footpath upgrades,’’ the spokeswoman said.

More than 50 people packed the gallery for May’s council meeting a�er a vigorous social media campaign encouraged people to email councillors. Residents including Woodend picture framer Zoltan Bexley have been fundraising for the expected appeal since early June.

Objectors will meet on Wednesday at Victoria Hotel from 7.30pm.

�e group behind a campaign for an all-abilities park in Romsey can �nally begin planning work with the sale of an old school site made o�cial last week.

Visiting the former Romsey Primary School site in Main Street last Wednesday, Macedon Labor MP Mary-Anne �omas and Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the $352,000 sale was complete a�er more than two years of negotiations.

Ms �omas said it was a fantastic outcome, with land that was owned ‘‘by the people’’ to be used for the community.

‘‘Good ideas will win in the end,’’ she said, acknowledging the Greater Romsey All Abilities Park (GRAAP) group’s eight-year campaign.

‘‘I’ve always been a supporter of the work of GRAAP because I could see immediately the opportunities here at this fabulous space.’’

GRAAP’s vision is to create a park that will bring together people from all age groups and abilities.

Spokeswoman Raelene Mottram said the group was thrilled that formal planning could begin.

‘‘It’s taken a little while to get there,’’ she said. ‘‘But this is going to be a special spot. �ere aren’t that many passive open spaces le� in Romsey.’’

‘‘Our vision is for a park that really will be a regional asset,’’ she said.

�e council will work with GRAAP to secure funding for construction of the park.

Cr Anderson said she believed the park would attract people from across the shire and beyond.

‘‘�is is a great project where the community, council and state government are all working in partnership for something that bene�ts everyone,’’ she said.

‘‘I know there’s going to be a lot of hard work put in.’’

Unsatisfactory taste tests and low water levels have forced Western Water to adjust its treatment regime at Gisborne’s Rosslynne Reservoir.

Extra treatment processes started last week a�er the water authority received more than 40 calls from Gisborne, Sunbury and Diggers Rest residents over the previous six weeks.

Despite some wet weather this winter, rains have failed to boost supplies at Rosslynne Reservoir, which services Sunbury and other southern towns of the Macedon Ranges.

Customer and community relations manager Graham Holt said the storage was at 42 per cent capacity, its lowest level since December 2010.

‘‘Rosslynne has been steadily dropping for the past 18 months, despite our customers’ drinking water use remaining fairly consistent

A higher level of organic materials at Rosslynne Reservoir was found to be the cause.

Western Water said it may be another few weeks before people notice taste improvements, as water from the �ltration plant takes time to work through the system. However, it has con�rmed that the water remains safe to drink.

A family holiday to the United States not only opened Hamish Hunter’s eyes to the plight of people less fortunate – it inspired him to do something about it.

Needing to complete a ‘‘promise challenge’’ to progress to Scouts, the Sunbury cub came home and decided to collect food to help the town’s homeless and families doing it tough.

Hamish’s mother Kate smiled broadly last week as the eight-year-old handed over several shopping bags full of items, ranging from non-perishable food and long-life milk to toothbrushes and toiletries, to Sunbury-based support service CareWorks SunRanges.

‘‘Like other parents, we’ve always told him to eat his dinner because there’s many people who have to go without,’’ Ms Hunter says.

Victoria is the place to be if you want to further your career in basketball, which is what attracted Chris Tighe to the Sunbury Jets Basketball Association.

Tighe, who was working in Queensland, has been appointed to the association’s new junior development role.

He has previously worked in player development and as a strength and conditioning coach with both NBL club Townsville Crocodiles and the reigning WNBL champions Townsville Fire.

“Victoria has come on leaps and bounds with progress in basketball, and it’s the place to be,” Tighe said last week.

“I did a little bit of research about Sunbury and it was close to the city but far enough away to be quiet.”

Tighe’s �rst role at Sunbury was to develop a new program for the association’s under-8s and under-10s, which will start in October.

“�e program will see under-8s and under-10s compete but also have a development element,” he said. “It will ensure they have a strong foundation and good, consistent coaching. Currently they go straight into playing games.

“�is way they will have a skills session followed by a full game.”

�e new program will have four levels, based on age and skill.

“�ere’s been good feedback so far about what we’re looking at doing,” said Tighe, who will also help develop the association’s representative sides.

“I’ll help with a skills base and a strength and conditioning base, such as injury prevention and teaching them how to move properly,” he said.

“A lot of injuries come from bad habits ingrained at an early age.”

Tighe’s background in the WNBL has led to him wanting to try to increase female participation in the sport.

“I’m hoping to get more girls playing basketball,” he said.

Operations manager Andrew Summerville said Tighe ticked a lot of boxes coming into the role.

“He’s a great individual development coach, high-performance strength and conditioning coach, and he has experience running junior development programs like Aussie Hoops,” Summerville said.

“His elite experience in the NBL and WNBL will also bene�t our players and coaches.

“He’s not just a coach; he’s an administrator and expert in injury management and rehabilitation.”

Safe hands run Jets’ nursery

Lions’ women one game from the perfect seasonBefore the season, as they battled for survival, the �nals seemed well out of reach for Sunbury Lions women’s football team.

Now the Lions are one win away from the perfect season, having won every game so far in the west division of the Victorian Women’s Football League.

�e Lions reached the grand �nal with a win over Melton Centrals on Saturday.

Sunbury came out �ring, leading by 19 points at quarter-time and extending that in every quarter to win 10.13 (73) - 5.1 (31).

For Lions coach Kerry Saunders, �nals were

a long time coming, with the side now anxious for them to start.

“For the last few weeks we were keen to get through without slipping up,” she said before the Centrals game. “�e girls have been really keen to get onto playing �nals.

“�e youth girls who have played for us during the year have now joined us at training since their seasons have �nished. �ey’ve added youth and entertainment.”

Saunders says having the youth girls involved in the �nals is bene�cial for both them and the club.

“We’ve been lucky to get some of the Craigieburn youth girls to come across and play,” she said. “�ey gave us a hand when we needed them in horrible weather and they’re part of the team now.

“At the start of the year they never thought they’d be playing senior footy �nals for us.”

Saunders says many of the side have played in �nals and grand �nals with the club previously, and she coached Wyndhamvale Suns to a premiership last year.

“Some players have never played �nals before and it’s about making sure everyone knows

you have to keep working hard to make grand �nals,” she said.

�e Lions will have almost a full squad to choose from for the grand �nal.

“Lyndal Hayes has hurt her knee, but we’re hoping she will be �t,” Saunders says. “And Natasha Hardy is expected to get plaster o� her arm in the week of the grand �nal.”

�e Lions will play either Manor Lakes or Melton Centrals in the grand �nal, at Coburg City Oval from 10am on Sunday, August 30.

�e Sunbury Lions’ chances of making the Ballarat Football League �nals changed within a matter of hours on Saturday.

Needing wins in both their remaining matches and hoping that either Ballarat or Sebastopol upset Bacchus Marsh, the Lions thought their �nals hopes were all but gone as they were four points behind the Cobras.

But by the end of the day, the Lions were back in the box seat to �nish sixth and claim the last �nals berth.

�e Lions did their part by beating Sebastopol 13.15 (93) - 8.3 (51).

Ballarat then caused a boilover beating Bacchus Marsh, putting the Lions signi�cantly ahead of the Cobras on percentage.

For Lions coach Rick Horwood, the change in fortunes was unexpected.

“We are rapt,” he said. “It gives us the opportunity to put our �nals hopes in our own hands.

“It will keep our record of playing �nals in the Ballarat Football League every year in tact.

“Who would have thought that would happen a couple of weeks ago?”

�e Lions were made to �ght for the win against the Burras, who continue to improve each week.

“We nearly kicked ourselves out of the game in the third quarter,” Horwood said. “We had 19 entries into our forward 50 and could only kick eight points.

“Our defence stood strong, though, and kept them to only 11 scoring shots for the game.”

As it has been o�en this season, it was the younger players who stood up.

“We had four under-18 players in the side,” Horwood said. “�ey have deserved to play games but if we took too many from the under-18s they wouldn’t have enough players to �eld a side.

“Jack Hannett, in his �rst game, was in the top three players on the �eld. Dean Muir was best on ground while William Healy, the other �rst gamer, was in our top 10.”

Horwood said the only negative out of the game was the report of Ben Said.

If o�ered a one-week suspension, Horwood said the club would take it to ensure Said was back for �nals.

�e Lions will go into their �nal game, against Melton, as favourites.

“We go to Melton full of con�dence,” Horwood said. “We need to start well and take the game away from them.”

In the netball, the Lions will �nish fourth on the ladder.

On Saturday they defeated the Burras 57-34 with Chloe Curran shooting 44 goals in the win.

Contenders’ jigsaw �lled in for �nals�e six-team �nals line-up is set in the Riddell District Netball League with just one round remaining in the season.

Melton Centrals won the battle for that sixth spot over Diggers Rest at McPherson Park at the weekend.

Unless Kilmore can cause a massive upset, the match-ups for the �nals’ �rst week will stay as currently listed. If the Blues win, the Tigers slip to sixth.

Currently, Riddell will play Rupertswood, Macedon will face Centrals, and it will be a Romsey and Lance�eld match-up.

Centrals managed to hold on to their �nals spot. For most of the match, it looked as though the Centrals would easily beat the Burras, as they were leading at each of the breaks. At three-quarter time, last year’s premiers were 10 goals up.

But the Burras, knowing any �nals hopes were on the line, fought back hard in the last

quarter, falling just short of a tide-turner, with a 49-47 win to Centrals.

Melton coach Randy Pereira was rapt his side was able to hold on for the win.

“We were actually 10 goals up with about six minutes to go, and I think the girls thought they might have had it won,” he said. “Our lead actually got down to one goal before we eventually got it back out to the two.

“It was certainly nerve-wracking in the end, but it was great to get the win,” Pereira said.

�e Centrals have the bye this week and the Burras can’t overtake them, even if they beat Macedon.

Rupertswood secured a double chance and top-two �nish, with a 63-38 victory over Romsey. A�er sharing the points in round two, both teams were keen to get bragging rights.

�e Sharks, coming o� their second loss of the season last week, came out �ring to lead

by eight goals at quarter-time. �e Redbacks reduced that to seven goals by half-time.

A�er the main break, the Sharks stepped up, shooting 37-19 in the second half.

Macedon will �nish third on the ladder a�er defeating Lance�eld. In a match that showed where both sides were at, it was the Cats who stepped up in the last quarter.

�ey led 33-31 at three-quarter time before a last quarter defensive masterclass restricted the Tigers to two goals.

�e �nal score was 45-33.Kate McLeod was judged best on court, while

Taylah Watson was the Tigers’ best player.

A�er four premierships in six years, Sunbury Tigers knew they were due for a down year in Victorian Rugby League �rst grade.

And they were right. �e Tigers won only four games for the year, a far cry from premiership success 12 months ago.

�e Tigers �nished seventh in what may look like a poor season, but coach Jamie Blackwood said it was anything but.

“It was tough as we lost lots of players,” he said before the club’s �nal game of the season, a 40-24 loss to Casey.

“We lost a whole team through players leaving, long-term injuries and losing players we normally get from Melbourne Storm. We have started the rebuilding process.”

Blackwood said the club had resigned itself to the fact it would lose access to Melbourne Storm’s under-20s, but that had come a year earlier than expected.

“We’ve been getting seven to eight players,” he said. “Now it’s one or two, which puts a dint in weekly plans.

“�e NRL under-20 competition is ending at the end of next year, so Storm has decided to keep its players in New South Wales and Queensland, as it is more cost-e�cient.

“�ey’ve had a massive injury list this year, which hasn’t helped either.”

Blackwood said while losing Storm players hurt Sunbury, it cleared the way for the club’s junior players.

“It’s control, alt and delete and start all over again,” he said. “We’ll focus on under-14, under-16s and under-18 and we have a development program in the pipeline.

“�is season is the �rst time we’ve had under-18, and �ve of those have played in �rst division.”

Sale Finau and David Matangi are two players who have stepped up from under-18s.

Blackwood said captain Scott Matthews had also been sensational, while Terry Constantinou was again among the best players.

“We’ll build around these players,” he said.

Blackwood, who is in his �rst season as sole coach a�er working with Julian Keddy for the previous two years, said he would love to coach the team again.

“We’re pretty happy with where we are,” he said.
