Hurriyat Conference (G) chair- man, Syed Ali Geelani, in a state- ment today said, “By mentioning wishes, aspirations and miseries of the Kashmiri people on the stage of world body, Pakistan PM has encouraged the subjugated people of this state and informed the world leaders about the history and pre- vailing situation of the Kashmir.” “Nawaz Sharif adopted realistic stand in UNGA by speaking about the persistent failure of the United Nations with regard to resolution of Kashmir dispute,” Geelani said. “Kashmir is the longest pending dispute in UN charter. The UNGA has although passed 18 resolutions favouring right to self determina- tion for the Kashmiri people but due to certain political reasons this institution failed to implement its resolutions here,” Geelani said. Hurriyat Conference (M) chair- man Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, while welcoming Nawaz Sharief’s state- ment, termed it a source of strength for the people of Kashmir. “It has encouraged the people of Kashmir to carry forward their struggle for self-determination,” Mirwaiz, in a statement today, said. “Sharief has shown political maturity and will to resolve issues with New Delhi. He has also exhib- ited flexibility toward resolving Kashmir issue and all other out- standing issues between the two countries to bring peace in the region. His suggestions of starting a process of peace with demilitariza- tion in Kashmir and initiation of a process of dialogue are clear signal that he wants to move ahead with New Delhi with all the honesty,” Mirwaiz said. Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman, Muham- mad Yasin Malik, while com- menting on Sharief’s proposals at UNGA, said in a statement today that “Proposals like withdrawal of forces from Jammu Kashmir, res- olution of Jammu Kashmir issue for peace and prosperity, accept- ing Kashmiris as prime party to the dispute etc. are positive and reason- able suggestions.” “Kashmir issue is a humanitar- ian issue that has consumed three generations of Kashmiris and is constantly putting people of India and Pakistan in a conflict situa- tion. Hence, it has jeopardized their prosperity as well. The people of Jammu Kashmir are the owners of Kashmir and prime party to the dis- pute and no solution can be found by ignoring them,” Yasin Malik said, adding that “For a peaceful and prosper sub-continent, India and Pakistan will have to make every effort for resolution of Jammu Kashmir issue.” Terming the stance taken by Nawaz Sharief as realistic, United Jihad Council (UJC) chair- man Syed Salahuddin today said, “The historical speech of Nawaz Sharief with regard to Kashmir not only won the hearts of mil- lions of Kashmiris but has also strengthened their resolve to fight for their freedom.” “India should shun its intransi- gence and accept reality that Kash- mir is a long pending dispute which needs to be resolved. The UN reso- lutions provide legal and historical basis to Kashmir issue but unfor- tunately the criminal silence and duplicity from the international community added to the woes and sufferings of the Kashmiri people,” the UJC spokesman Syed Sadaqat, in a statement today, quoted Sala- huddin as having said. “Bilateral dialogue is not any solution to Kashmir issue. So far over 155 bilateral dialogues have failed. People of Jammu and Kash- mir are the real representatives and without making them part of the dialogue, no dialogue process will succeed,” UJC chairman said. Hailing Sharief’s speech, Demo- cratic Freedom Party (DFP) chair- man, Shabir Ahmad Shah, in a statement today, termed it as cou- rageous and based on truth. Shah said, “Pak Premier’s state- ment is resolution to all impend- ing issues. It is a clear proof that Pakistan wants peaceful and cor- dial relations with its neighbours.
