Sometimes it’s hard out here forfangirl. It feels like we have towork twice as hard as the guysto prove we’re genuinely into

geek. We’d like to be able to enjoy our fandoms without our femininity being scrutinized, geek out without being accusedof being interested in something, just for thepretty faces. We all know their sexy is just abonus. Not to mention most women’s magazines are filled with sexist and stereotypical information that end up instilling anxiety.

This is where Squee comes in – a magazine and online community where youcan be as unapologetically fangirly as youwant. We’re going to discuss movies, comics, games, TV, the internet and every-thing in between. While this mini issue is notrepresentative of all that we’ll offer or theexact end product, I just want to whet yourappetite a little. Maybe entice some of youto get involved. It is the work of a few but intime it could be the collaboration of many.

Now to the matter at hand - it’s the newyear and that can mean: 2013 ended asswiftly as it started, fireworks, parties andeverything smells like star shine, rainbowsand butterfly milk. That is, if you’re a muggle. If you’ve managed to fall down the rabbit-hole of some charming on the outside, gut-wrenching on the inside fandom thingsaren’t always so chipper.

These past twelve months have beensome of the most emotionally crippling forfandoms from the finale of Breaking Bad tothe travesty of the Red Wedding. We’ve lostbad ass vet, Hershel Greene, Carol’s stillnowhere, Judith’s missing, Alison’s alive (notsure if that’s a good or bad thing) and KevinTran’s dead. DEAD AND GONE! Writers inall their cruel glory, giveth and taketh away.

Eleven regenerated halfway throughChristmas dinner! I can see Moffat’s happyGrinch face now. Luckily there are ways todeal the transition of a Time Lord. And whileyou’re struggling to cope why not tuck intosome bread and butter pudding. There’s an

article in here about hairy clothing and a chatwith a Whovian.

Since we’re on the topic of Moffat creations: it’s always nice to see anintelligent, meticulous, sarcastic, well cheekboned character on TV. Sherlock returns onNew Year’s Day with the first episode of itsthird series, The Black Hearse. We’re starting the year like we mean to finish –strong! Sherlockian, Andrea Bea, talks abouther love for London’s famous detective.

Fandoms aside, however you plan onringing in the new year, make sure you havea GOOD (but responsible) time. Party likelast year wasn’t easy. Like you had to fightyour way through to the end. You’re aliveand doing you despite everything that wasthrown at you. Whatever troubles you’vehad remember you survived. Party likeyou’re still here standing and getting readyto kick ass in 2014.

Oh - one more thing. I am very grateful to everyone who has supported andcontributed to this adventure. Pauline, Aprilyn and Andy I won’t forget how willingyou were to help, a stranger really, when Iasked. Also thank you for reading!

As I end my very first editor’s letter I do sowith a great deal of hope that what I amdoing will be the start of something good. For all who live in Middle Earth, Westeros,Neverland, Emerald City, Hogwarts, Narnia, thereabouts or even at home in bed undera duvet trawling through Tumblr, this mag’sfor you! Hope you like it.

Happy New Year Everyone,

Squee meet fangirl. Hey girl! Fangirl meet Squee. Now we’ve got the basic introductions out of the

way, let’s get down to business.

Squee! Ah the sweetsound of fangirling. Thisword fits perfectly intothe ethos of the type ofmagazine I wish to create – fresh, funnyand fangirly. Squee is an

original fangirl lifestyle magazine andwebsite unique in its ability to connectwith quirky, geeky young women.

We seek to bridge the gap betweenfandom and femininity. Here are some ofthe things you can expect from the mag-azine.

In every issueDear SqueeHere we’ll publish some of your letters, posts, emails, questions, tweets andthoughts that you send to us.

Real LifeIn this section we’ll discussnews and views happeningin the actual real world. Youknow muggle territory. You mayfind a column or two. If you have a topic you’lllike to discuss, you’re a budding writer orjournalism student/graduate get in touchyou may well be our new columnist.

There’ll be an Advice column and Wellness column; because we care aboutyour wellbeing too. Natter is the area inwhich we’ll chat to readers, authors, actors and you about life.

StyleFaaaashion. Looking good and feelingfine. Slay! No, don’t worry we’re not goingto tell you what to wear, how to dress yourself orwhat you should like. In-stead we’re just goingto share ideas andplaces that cater to theunique. You can choose thebits you want. So you can be the great in-dividual that you are!

BeautyBecause all fangirls are sexy and we wantto share all the things you can do to

persistently marinate in that sexy. If you’reshaking your head because you’re

secretly telling yourself youaren’t sexy, pretty or any-thing positively radiant, then you better tell your-

self to shut the hell up be-cause all fangirls are sexy

and everything else is irrelevant. Okay?Okay.

FeelsOur culture, review and fandom newssection. Here you’ll find ourthoughts on anything pop cul-ture. New TV shows, books, music, films etc.You can getinvolved too – with reviews ofyour own. I’d like to start abook club too. Our discus-sions/meet ups will be publishedin the magazine and online. The websitewill track the day-to-day stuff while the magazine will feature the end result – areview or any interesting findings. Thebook club will depend on the number ofpeople interested.

Stuff and ThingsAnything else we feel you should beaware of! Fanart, great blogs. We’ll showcase your work too. In this sec-tion Random & Fandom is wherewe’ll chat to fangirls/you.

D.I.Y.Think of it as the three C’s. Cooking, crafts and cosplay. Tips, tricks, how to’s, best places to find… all thatgood stuff! We’ll chat to cosplayers andshow off their hard work. Cosplay of themonth too. Volunteers are welcome.

Not in every issueThe Sex FilesSometimes we’ll talk about sex, baby!

FeaturesCutting edge articles, interviews with yourfavourite actors, animators, directors, artists, musician and so on. TV show theories like who’s A anyway?

Extra fun timesFreebies, giveaways, meet ups, competitions, objects of desire. We takesuggestions too.

Important things to note! The attitude of Squee is funny, fierceand full of sass.

Squee is for those geeky youngwomen who want a magazine freefrom hate. We want to celebrate allthings female- our bodies, skin, hair,

likes and dislikes. We don’t want tochange you or make you hate

yourself. We want to love, share and giveyou a nudge in the right direction shouldyou need one. Our main focus is youngwomen aged 18 and over. It doesn’t meanthat anyone below 18 can’t read it or getinvolved. Take Random & Fandom, forexample, in this issue it’s with a 15-yearold.

While this magazine has feminism atits core it isn’t a social justice magazine. Will social justice issues pop up? Do

bears sh*t in the woods? As a humanbeing and woman of colour, I believeit is important to see the flaws in ourvarious fandoms and their represen-

tation of minorities. Lord knows I have issues with the

representation of women and people ofcolour on The Walking Dead yet it remains one of my favourites. Don’t getme started of Game of Thrones either!

It is a place at the forefront of fandom– Squeedom if you will – for all femalegeeks to be as unapologetically fangirlyas they like.

If you’d like to contribute, get involved, have suggestions or simply say hello contact details areat the back of the magazine.

The idea of using hair as a fashionresource isn’t new. In the ‘90’s,American, Barber Bill Black created a twin set of bikinis fromhuman hair, which he used as aprop to promote his idea that usinghair in different ways could savethe world. He said three basic

human needs are food, shelter, and clothing. Youcan grow food in it, build bricks from it, and makeclothes from it. As the world's population increasesand its resources dwindle, we would do well to useall of the materials at our disposal, even if they'reswept from a barbershop floor.

Clothing sewn from hair has been on the scenefor some time. In 2008, Project Runway's ChrisMarch sent models clothed in human hair down thefinal runway, and shocked viewers, judges andmentor Tim Gunn.

The following year, designers Sonia Rykiel, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Maison MartinMargiela and Alena Akhmadullina's included humanhair creations in their fashion shows. This hairyplight was amped up by designers like Charlie LeMindu, VPL, Holly Russell and Grau Wal. Much ofthis is owed to Mother Monster and slave to fashionLady Gaga donning dresses from their hair innovated collections.

2011 saw an extravagant hairy creation. ThelmaMadine, a renowned dress designer, with the helpof Liverpool based hair stylist Ryan Edwards, haspossibly created the largest dress made out ofhuman hair. The size 6 dress took over 300 hoursto make, used 820 feet of hair and weighs about 33pounds! Over a period of 12 days, a team of eightpeople put in around 300 hours of work to completethe dress. The dress is made up of about 10,000hair wefts combined with 12 underskirts and 1500crystals.

“It’s fair to say we’ll probably not see anotherdress like it for a very long time,” Ryan Edwardssaid.

The dress was first revealed at the 2011 Alternative Miss Liverpool pageant and Thelma Madine set a price of £50,000 for this unique

wedding dress. Last year a Sunderland

hairdresser caught the media’s attention with her hairy haute couture gown.

Jodie Breeds, owner of 24Carat Salon designed a dressmade entirely out of human hair. The blonde ensemble was modelled by Holly Lyons in theenvironmentally-friendly dresssection of the Miss England 2012contest.

Jodie’s original idea for thedress came from the beauty pageant and her desire to keepher brand involved. She said: “Iwanted my winner of Miss 24Carat Hair & Beauty 2012 to stillstay with my brand theme as wellas being eco-friendly Friendly. I’veworked with hair extensions a lotbut never incorporated it into anitem of clothing before.”

She had already worked extensively with hair extensions“but never incorporated it into an item of clothingbefore.” She started planning the dress back inSeptember 2011 following Holly’s win. She thengathered the extensions and passed them on to heraunt, Margaret Jenner. It took her aunt six hours intotal to stitch it all together.

Wearing human hair is still very much a taboosubject. In today’s society, hair is worn with pridebut once severed it is viewed as filthy, swept awayand binned. As such the idea of clothing made fromhair and then worn on our bodies is a grower (nopun intended).

Charlie Le Mindu once said: "People just need toget over the fact they are wearing something fromtheir body. They seem to think it is still living andthat freaks them out." He added once society getstheir heads around wearing hair it will becomemainstream like wearing fur- a luxury.

Jodie drew on past trends to explain the reluctance

Follicled fashionClothes made from human hair – fashion statement, taboo or novelty

item? I investigate & speak to Jodie Breeds, hairdresser turned hair couture gown designer and Kerry Howley, Creative Art student.

10

Page 11: Squee mini issue

to follicled fashion. She said: “Well thinking backon different fashion trends from the past. I imagine that back in the 60’s there would havebeen an initial uproar when the mini skirt was firstseen on the streets of Britain. All new styles taketime to catch on.”

Jodie isn’t the only hairdresser creating hautecouture pieces from hair. In 2009 Huang Xin, ahairdresser from Beijing created works of art fromdiscarded human hair. Some of his notable artworks include a replica of Tiananmen Squareand a model of Barack Obama to celebrate the60th anniversary of People’s Republic of Chinaand the President of the United States of America’s visit to China respectively.

The following year Kim Do, a Vietnamese hairdresser, designed a tunic made from one million meters of hair. The hair was collected from54 different people across Vietnam, then died andsewn into the dress using a needle. Two yearsago, Tsai Shiou-ying, 54, a Taiwanese hairdressermade a pair of high heeled shoes from realhuman hair.

According to Charlie Le Mindu “ in 10 yearswe'll all be wearing clothes made of human hair,we just need to get our heads round the fact."Perhaps he is right. Jodie believesthat through more exposure we maysee more hair clothing pieces beingdesigned and made.

Clothes from hair is still a somewhat new concept but with thelikes of innovative designers findingnew ways to use hair in their collections and influential people like

Lady Gaga wearing hairy couture, it isfeasible that fashion of this kind, canmake its way to high street shops. Solong as it becomes more contemporary, wearable and accessible.

Perhaps the delicate human hairnecklaces of, 23 year-old creative artstudent, Kerry Howley would make asmoother transition for some. Whenasked if she thought her necklacescould ever be sold on the high street shesaid: “I would like to think that we maydo one day.”

However she believes that clothingand accessories made from hair has aplace in high fashion “as a statement butprobably not everyday fashion.” Eitherway Kerry’s necklaces serve as an alternative to dressing in hairy clothing

and evidence of this trend’s staying power. For me I struggle to fully appreciate large human

hair dresses, like Madine’s gigantic wedding dress. As beautiful as it looks all I keep thinking about ishow much all that human hair would have helpedcancer patients, who are on waiting lists to get wigs because there aren’t enough people who have 9inches or more of one length of hair to donate tothem. As long as designers wish to create withhuman hair it should remain within the realms of highfashion for one-off couture pieces.

As for why clothing made from human hair will remain taboo, Kerry said it best: “I don't thinkpeople can ever get over where the material camefrom. Materials like bone and hair and teeth are so personal, [once] separated from their 'body' perhapsthey can only be a reminder of mortality, violenceand decay. Hair less so, but still a material that belonged to someone in an elemental way.”

Everyone knows Sherlock Holmes. Tome, when I first read the books, I sawHolmes as the first and only "one-man-CSI", whose deductive and reasoningskills surpassed every brilliant mind everknown during his time.

Having said that, when I asked a friend to suggest a fewTV series I could watch during summer break, she gaveme a whole list. But the one that stood out to me the mostwas "Sherlock". Probably because I was familiar withDoyle's original books but I mainlygot intrigued when I found out itwas a modern interpretation of theseries. I thought, FINALLY! I wascurious to see how such a brilliantand eccentric mind would use hisdeductive skills when technologyand advanced resources were al-ready available. Just like every Sherlock fan, the

first thing that excites me aboutseason three is finally, satisfying thefrustration of finding out how Sherlock survived thatbloody fall. Also, how John would react when Sherlockcomes back to him (He would probably beat him up or atleast give him one huge POW right in the kisser!).Something to always look forward to with Sherlock is

the series' own interpretation of the cases the old Holmescame across. I mean who wouldn't be excited for anotherseason of a brilliantly written and well thought out show? And we finally have a premier date 50 years earlier thanwhat everyone expected. But seriously, it's still 2 years ofwaiting after all, so you can't blame me for being madly excited about Sherlock season 3. And frankly, seeingBenedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and MartinFreeman as John Watson is solely an exciting treat by itself.Heck, I'm even excited about seeing Anderson again!Sherlock has made an impact on me as well. I only

noticed that, after becoming a Sherlockian, I've been viewing things quite differently. It may sound crazy but I'vebeen observing things the way I think Sherlock would seethings - trying to deduce random people in my mind andtrying to see what the eyes cannot see.Sherlock's biggest impact in my life is probably due to theSherlock fandom. I've met so many wonderful peoplefrom different parts of the world who are brilliant and amazing. I recently watched The Hobbit: TheDesolation of Smaug with someone I met on Tumblr

who's also a big Sherlock fan. She,bencumber (on Tumblr), is amazing and I love her. We haveso much in common, it's crazy!I've also discovered that I could

make graphics and I learned howto use Adobe Photoshop becauseof the series. And when peopletell me that they like the things I‘vemade, I can’t believe it and itmakes me so happy. Because ofthat, it inspires me to be more

creative and to improve on myself whatever I’m making. For people who have not yet seen or even heard of

BBC's Sherlock, you’re missing out on such a brilliantthing. It is everything that I could want in a TV series.Other than the mind-boggling cases, brilliant humour andthe most frustrating cliff-hangers that will keep you at theedge of your seat – and make you want to smash your TVscreen...with your face – believe me when I say this showis definitely a work of art. The cinematography is so original. It is truly unlike anything else on television. Theepisodes are so well thought out that you would think thatyou're watching a movie instead of an episode from a TVshow. So if someone would ask me if I would recommend Sherlock to them, I would say, as Sherlockhimself would have uttered: Obviously.

You know it’s official when a fandom has its own name.Sherlockian, Andrea Bea, shares her thoughts andlove for all things Consulting Detective Holmes.

For decades Arthur Conan Doyle’sbooks about a genius detective and hislong suffering friend have thrilled manybut 21st century’s Sherlock, created by Stephen Moffat and Mark Gatniss, made the fandom get real.

19

SHERLOCKIAN LOVE

The whole Sherlock Holmes saga is a triumphant illustration of art’s supremacyover life. Perhaps no fiction character evercreated has become so charmingly realto his readers. It is not that we take ourblessed Sherlock too seriously... But Holmesis pure anesthesia. We read the storiesagain and again; perhaps most of all forthe little introductory interiors which givea glimpse of 221B Baker Street.–Christopher Morley

YOU’LL NEED

Bread & butter pudding is best served warm with a dollop of cream. If you try this recipe we’dlove to know how it all went down. Send us some pictures too! Got some recipes you’d like toshare? Drop us a line.

1 Preheat the oven to 180C/355F/Gas 4.2 Grease a 1 litre/2 pint pie dish with butter.3 Crusts are optional. Spread each slice, on one sidewith butter, then cut into triangles for a neat finish or rip the slice in 2 or 3 pieces for a rustic look.4 Arrange a layer of bread, buttered-side up, in the bottom of the dish, then add a layer of sultanas. Sprinklewith a little cinnamon and then repeat the layers of breadand sultanas, sprinkling with cinnamon, until you haveused up all of the bread. Then set aside.5 Gently warm the milk and cream in a pan over a lowheat until it’s lukewarm. Don't let it boil!6 Crack the eggs into a bowl; add three quarters of thesugar and nutmeg. Then lightly whisk until pale.7 Add the lukewarm milk and cream mixture then stirwell; it should be frothy and runny. If it starts to thickenup use a whisk instead and add some milk.8 Pour the mixture over the bread layers.9 Sprinkle the remaining sugar and leave to stand for 10minutes so the bread could soak up all that goodness.10 Place the dish into the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes, or until the pudding has set and the top isgolden-brown. It should be firm but jiggly.

Is Doctor Who your favourite fandom?Yeah it really is.

How did you first get into Doctor Who?Well if you don’t count that i watched the Sarah JaneAdventures when i was 11, I got into Doctor Who viaTumblr and friends.

Sarah Jane Adventures definitely count. Yourgraphic is What inspired it?Honestly? Nothing specific. I was just messing around,it was 4 am and I honestly had never tried makinggraphics like this before. I didn’t know who I wanted todo a graphic of, but for some reason I decided to gowith Peter Capaldi. I really don’t know I just made it upas i went along with it

Well colour me impressed! I can’t even make agraphic with a stickman let alone something so delicate and on my first try.How did it feel to have it reblogged by DoctorWho’s Tumblr? You know the episode where the space Titanic ramsinto Ten’s TARDIS and how Ten reacted? That was myinitial reaction. Then I couldn’t stop grinning.

Will you be making more?Well yeah! I literally just posted a graphic withEleven and I don’t know...I probably will do more

since this was really fun.

Ha! My timing is as always impeccable. Everyonehas a first Doctor, is Eleven your first Doctor?Nope, mine was the ninth Doctor.

Are you ready for Eleven’s regeneration? I know I’m

not.NO! I’mnot readyhelp!

I’m not sure Ican! Any tips onhow to deal with it?You can cry and be allgross with your emotions. Dealing isn’t even an option.-sobs-

Yeah there really should be some sort of programme for this, like Fictitional Death Anonymous...hmm. Who’s your favouritecompanion & why?I think my all time favourite has got to be Sarah JaneSmith because of her intelligence and her cutenesswow! (Also Elisabeth Sladen was wonderful).

She was such a BAMF! In life and as the Doctor’scompanion. Nice choice.

What do you think makes Doctor Who so amazing? The variety of events and that everything is possible. Idon’t it’s just so magical.

-Squee- I know right!

Lastly your Doctor Who cosplay is beyond words! How long did it take to make?I didn’t make it, I bought it so it didn’t take that long 8)

Haha! Still looks fab! Cheers for the chat.

That Peter Capaldi graphic was reblogged by Doctor Who’s official Tumblr which ishow it came to my attention. It captures the sadness ofEleven’s regeneration and Matt Smith’s departure; yet

there’s a glimmer of hope even excitement – what happenswhen the clock strikes Twelve? What new adventures arewe about to share? When a simple graphic manages todo all that, I had to click on to its creator’s blog for aquick online chat and luckily Pauline didn’t say no.

TIME OF THE DOCTOR

REVIEW & TIPS ONDEALING WITH A REGENERATION

A glance at some potentially big animated films of 2014. If you’venot watched it yet & don’t mindspoilers – some important things youshould know about The Hobbit: TheDesolation of Smaug & some mustread books of 2013 that we neverquite got around to reading buttotally should. And totally will...

Page 32: Squee mini issue

You get new Doctor, you like new Doctor, you love new Doctor, Doctorregenerates. And so the vicious cycle continues. This isn’t new toyou. Being a Whovian is knowing regeneration is as inevitable as a

companion. However logic is futile now. Once the regeneration is complete you

deal with the pitfall of emotions. Days may have passed since MattSmith’s departure and it still hurts a little, that glimpse of Amy sayingfarewell to her “raggedy man” was a tearjerker. When it comes to fangirling, regardless of age, emotion and logic are almost always at luggerheads. The following is a snapshot look at that mental battle. If likeme you’re still butthurt from that lacklustre episode, Sherlock premieressoon. Silver linings and all that.

The Stages of Fangirl Grief vs Fangirl Logic

Technically he’s doing a bit of both –we are getting a new Doctor. So...onto the next emotional phase.

Matt Smith and Moffat are just trolling.*Watches the regeneration* Nope!

“How dare he write a regeneration storyline that includes Christmas!!!!”Christmas IS ABOUT GIVING! NOT TAKING AWAY!!!”

@bbcdoctorwho Don’t let Matt go! Elevenneeds to stay! I’ll love you forever. All mytears. #makeithappen #PLEASE

You have had all the warnings andenough time to prepare yourself. Capaldilooks like he’s goning to be hilarious oncehe gets used to his kidneys.

Eventually you will make peace with theidea that Eleven’s gone. Chin up! Did youjust say chin...[sobs]

It doesn’t matter how much you beg. Mattthinks it’s the right time to leave so weshould do the right thing and wish him allthe best! He was a magnificient Doctor.

How to deal with the pain:

If you’re reading this I think it’s safeto assume you’ve watched theepisode. I’m not going to go intodetail about what happened–loose ends were tied and Eleven regenerated. This is more of a critique –analysis if you will, about the odd taste itleft after viewing. There were so manythings about this episode that I enjoyed, yet there were so manythings that stressed me outSkip to the good bit.Matt Smith. His Doctor was• one of my favourites and he neverlet me down.A Cyberman’s head, affectionately• called Handles was a clever move, intheory. The execution not so much.Sontarans in the snow.• All plot lines wrapped up• nicely (at a price). I especiallylove the crack in time/Gallifrey comes a-knockingsince the Doctors managedto save them in The Day of the

Doctor.Eleven’s aging: We have seen older• Doctors before but one dying of oldage while serving badass Santa realness, was fresh and ratheradorable. The Amy Pond “Raggedy• Man goodnight” was as unexpected as it was moving. Then it hurt because I’m still not over TheAngels Take Manhattan. The regeneration itself was a• new kind of beautiful. I loved Matt’sspeeches, using regeneration energyas a weapon, dropping of the bow tieand “I will always remember whenthe Doctor was me.”I enjoyed the break away from the• traditional one-face-changing-into-another transformation. The blink-and-you’ll-miss-itchange was just right.Peter Capaldi has the• maddest stare, kidney issuesand TARDIS piloting problems.Roll on Series 8!

What the frick frack paddywack give a me a bone, MoffatThe pace of this episode went from supersonic to sloth-mode and back again.Moffat is a skilled storyteller: he can weavea web of Whoness that traps us with pithymonologues and intricate concepts. Unfortunately he’s seemed todevelop a habit of overdoing it. There was somuch crammed into thisepisode the only way tojiggle them about was tohave warp speed storytelling. As a result the plot suffered. I had thisniggling feeling that I was missing something even though I hadn’t movedfrom my seat for the entire 60 minutes. The last 15 minutes were brilliant theother 45 felt like wasted opportunities. No one suffered more, fromthis, than Handles. I know I puthim in the good bit but let me explain. The writing and pacing lethim down. In short, Handles doesnot a Wilson make. When he died I under-stood Eleven’s loss but I didn’t feel it. When Wilson was lost at sea, in Castaway, leaving Tom Hanks to fend forhimself, I was distraught. In fact thinkingabout it now is giving me a critical sad-face. It took Robert Zemeckis andWilliam Broyles Jr. roughly twohours to embed Wilson, the vol-

leyball, into our hearts and minds.I liked Handles but I didn’t lovehim. Because there wasn’t enoughtime to love him. Because too much washappening for me to remember to lovehim. With more time I would have caredabout Clara’s family (her nan seems like agood time), Tasha Lem and the town calledChristmas. With more time Moffat mighthave rekindled my fondness of Clara. Since the dawn of time (bywhich I mean my first Doctor Whoepisode) I have aways enjoyed thecompanions - getting a new companion was like a regeneration. Each relationship different, strong andemotionally crippling in their own right.

But I cannot stand Clara. This wasn’t always the case. Her firstepisode, Asylum of the Daleks, where sheturned out to be Soufflé Girl/Oswin/Dalekthen died - I was all in! Followed by Victorian/Governess Clara in The Snowmen“She’s going to be the best companionever!” my heart roaredas I cackled with glee. That was shortlived.Just when I startedwarming up to her, thisepisode made me likeher presence a lot lessthan I did to begin with. She has so muchpotential but it’s wasted with the writing. She’s supposed to be the Impossible Girlwhile being “perfectly ordinary”. She is underused, underwritten and underdevel-oped. Now don’t get me wrong, JennaColeman is fabulous and I’ve seen her inother shows too. It’s Clara that’s my issue. You see companions are like Wilson. When they’re lost at sea you feel the pain. With Clara her being lost would make mefeel joy. I’m not sure if she lacks ‘relatability’since she’s the Doctor’s Saviour. A pointbacked up by the Time Lords response toher S.O.S. The thing is, the writing reducedher to a mystery, a plot device and oncethat had been solved she’s just blah.Perhaps with Peter Capaldi’s Twelve shemay have some room to grow. It was entertaining, almost great but assomeone who loves Doctor Who I felt likeMatt deserved more. The hype was strongbut the follow through was weak. I’ll miss you Matt and I’ll always remember when the Doctor was you. Here’s to fishfingers and custard (in theory).
