June-July 2011
The lengthy and thermometer bursting days must mean it is officially August! If you can
keep cool enough to grill out, then you will love the food-centric “mini-issue” of Laura U |
Mag! After spending the first few days of the month in New York and Las Vegas , to focus
on things epicurean seems apropos. We dined at some fabulous restaurants including Im-
perial No. 9 in SoHo and FIX at the Bellagio Hotel, and that made us hungry for even
more culinary adventures. At Laura U we love food; the following pages are just a sam-
pling of our favorites. Bon Appetit!
And, when you get the chance, stop by the Laura U Collection! Our designers have been sourcing
and reviving the best vintage furniture pieces by Thomasville, Tomlinson, and (not a Tom) James
Mont. You will also find the cutest line of organic baby bedding and gifts by Coyuchi – a new addition
to the shop!
Welcome to our “August Mini-Issue” of the Laura U | Mag! Enjoy the following pages!

A letter from A letter from A letter from A letter from the EDITOR
There is no better way to describe the heat that we have been feel-
ing, than as “a scorcher”. It seems that there is no where to hide
from the brutal heat that July/August gives you in Texas. So, with
much time inside to think about keeping the magazine fresh and
full of inspiration, we decided to change the schedule of the maga-
zine.
So we welcome you to our August mini-issue. In this our first ever
mini-issue, we give you some great tips on kitchen accessories and
paints, fashion and interior trends, restaurants you must try and a
sneak peak at some new items we having coming to the Laura U
Collection showroom. You’ll even see a few of my travel MUST
HAVES that have made it into my “way too heavy” luggage on my
very overdue vacation to Jamaica. White, sandy beaches and great
food—here I come!
Be sure to stay tuned for our September/October Issue where we
have lots in store! Until next time - I’m off on my vacation and you
can rest assured, I’ll have lots of photos to share.
See you next time!

Meet TJ Morgan
What interests you most about your line of work
in audio and video designs? I really enjoy designing the systems for our customers.
There are a tremendous number of consumer electronics
out there to choose from and I really enjoy finding the per-
fect mix of products that meet the customer’s needs, ex-
ceed their expectations and blend seamlessly into the
overall design of the home.
What was your very first techy gadget?
When I was 4 or 5 we got a Service Merchandise catalog
in the mail and I fell in love with a Casio calculator watch!
A store in the small town I grew up in actually had one on
display for a while and I used to get my mom to bring me
by there so I could look at it. I begged for it for Christmas
and eventually got it…a year later when they weren’t as
cool. I got an original calculator watch for my birthday a
couple years ago and I still wear it from time to time.
When did you start AVD and what made you go
into the audio video business? I started Audio Video Designs 6 years ago. I was working
as a store manager for Tweeter at the time and really saw
a need to be able to offer customers a more complete,
custom and design orientated approach.
Have you always been interested in technology?
Yes, I have always loved technology and electronics from
a very early age! As a kid I would take apart small elec-
tronics to try and figure out how they worked and ‘fix’
them even if they were not broken.

Tech Support
Which has been your favorite project?
My favorite project would be a residence I completed in
River Oaks. This is the 2nd home we have done for them
but this one was far more challenging than the first. The
home was built in 1939 and had concrete floors and lath
and plaster walls which provided lots of challenges along
the way. We were able to install an elaborate but easy to
use automation and control system complete with video
distribution to 14 rooms over fiber optic cable and distrib-
uted audio to 22 different rooms but make it all blend into
the new design of the home.
Explain the importance of technology to a
‘technologically-challenged’ person?
We strive to build automation systems that allow you to be
as hands on or off as you like. By automating lighting,
shades, drapery and HVAC to turn on and off and be set
to levels you would normally do on a daily basis we can
essentially take a lot of the daily tasks and routines out of
your hands. We also like to use control devices that a lot
of our customers already have and use daily like iPads and
iPhones to control their homes.
What’s your advice for an aspiring techy?
That’s tough. I try to stay up with a lot of the newest prod-
ucts and technologies but its hard because technology
evolves so fast. I would say that while it is nice to at least
be aware of the latest trends and technology advances,
don’t get caught up in being on the bleeding edge. Lots
of great ideas and technologies have come and gone
through no fault of their own. Keep an eye out on what
the major players are doing like Microsoft, Cisco, Sony and
of course Apple! I think energy management will play a
big role in our future over the next couple years so that is
definitely something I would focus on.
How do you foresee the future of AVD?
Over the past 2 years we have really grown both in the
size and complexity of projects as well as staff. I see that
trend continuing.

I’m probably going to sound a little biased towards Apple but I guess that’s because I’m a big believer in their products. Here goes: Apple iPhone – I couldn’t see living without my iPhone! If I were stuck on a desert island and could only have 1 piece of electronics I would take my iphone (and of course an outlet and charger for it). It is just so versatile. Apple iPad – The iPad is a great tool for business and is also good for personal entertainment, especially while traveling. AppleTV – For $99 the AppleTV in my opinion is one of the best elec-tronics values out there. The Netfilx interface is the best on the mar-ket and it allows you to be able to access a host of other online ser-vices as well as music, movies and TV shows from your iTunes library. You can also access your pictures from MobileMe or Flikr. Savant Control System – Savant is an Apple based control system that ties everything together. It is a very robust and reliable system that we use to control and automate virtually anything electronic in your home. Beats by Dre Headphones – OK, I know Apple doesn’t make these but they are great nonetheless! They sound great and are also noise cancelling. I never travel without them!

Eat Your Heart Out! In this our first ever food issue, we feature four great restaurants, a

Only a few blocks from Dallas’ Arts Dis-
trict, you will find The Capital Grille, a
nationally acclaimed steakhouse for
their dry aged steak selection, award-
winning wine list and relaxing, elegant
atmosphere. This is one luxurious restau-
rant any Dallas traveller should visit!
Their impressive menu includes entrees
of only the freshest seafood, most suc-
culent steaks and palate-pleasing veg-
etables. The knowledgeable servers
delight their guests by anticipating their
every need. No wonder the American
Culinary Federation awarded the res-
taurant with an “Achievement of Ex-
cellence Award.”
Experience The Capital Grille – Dallas
for an amiable lunch, an intimate din-

The Oasis on Lake Travis, Austin’s new
retail and restaurant village, wel-
comes a stylish, new restaurant – So-
leil. The Mediterranean-Italian sea-
food restaurant possesses a bountiful
and full-flavored menu under the
guidance of culinary legend and
James Beard-award-winning Texas
Chef Robert Del Grande.
This restaurant is situated on the cliffs
of Lake Travis and allows guests to
enjoy the breathtaking, panoramic
lake view, but the view isn’t the only
visual experience. With a stunning
“lake chic” interior inspired by the
beauty of costal Mediterranean sea-
side towns, Soleil creates a cozy, airy
atmosphere with striking elements
and textures.
Located in the heart of the Montrose
area at 415 Westheimer, Sorrento
Ristorante is a perfect Italian dining ex-
perience for locals as well as out-of-
towners in Houston. When first walking
in, it’s crazy to think you were just on
busy Westheimer. The inside is gor-
geous, almost reminiscent of fine Ital-
ian dining in the heart of Italy. Every
night there is someone playing magi-
cal notes on the piano in the foyer as
you enjoy the meal and the company.
Hands down, Sorrento has one of the
best Grilled Chicken Caesar Salads in
Houston. Try not to get full on the fresh
bread basket, consisting of focaccia,
anchovy, flatbread and more, they
carry around to your table as an appe-
tizer with a type of garlic
clove oil butter that is to die
for. You can’t go wrong
with anything on the menu.
And if there’s something
you’re craving that’s not on
the menu, Abbas, the own-
er, is always happy to whip
up a pasta just for you.

il sogno osteria Il Sogno Osteria is classic Italian done right.
Located at The Pearl, 200 E Grayson St, If the
fact that it’s on old brewery factory isn’t
enough, it sits on the banks of the San Anto-
nio River by the River Walk’s new Museum
Reach. Chef Weissman creates some of the
most amazing pasta and pizza dishes that
you can expect to have to wait for.
Their bread and pasta is all homemade, so
good luck trying to save room for your main
course when they bring the focaccia bread
around. Check out the antipasto bar with
their seafood salad, roasted red peppers in
anchovy sauce, cold fennel salad and oth-
ers that you can’t go wrong with. Walking in,
the smell of the wood-fired oven hard at
work fills the place and confirms any
thoughts of sharing a pizza with your group
as an appetizer.
You should never leave without trying their
nutella tart for dessert. First famous at Weiss-
man’s French restaurant, Le Rev, he now
brings it to Il Sogno. A soufflé like dessert
served with a scoop of vanilla bean ice
cream, how can you say no?

BarStop:TheRedDoorRed Door is a cozy lounge and bar located in
Houston’s Midtown, just a hop skip and a jump
away from downtown. With a beautifully de-
signed interior and upstairs patio, Red Door
maintains an atmosphere comfortable for just
about anyone. Go enjoy a cocktail and a
breathtaking view of Houston’s downtown city-
scape from the upstairs patio. This design was
executed by Laura U. The design team at Laura
U achieved the client’s vision of creating a
space with cutting edge trends. The main focal
point for the upstairs was the Houston skyline.
There are black & white geometric patterns on
the floor and an “indoor garden” covering the
walls that provide bold splashes of color. The
downstairs has a dark and mysterious type feel
that mesmerizes guests. The wall coverings con-
sist of back-lit beads providing the guests to feel
as though they were in a disco ball. During your

It’s officially the
one year anniver-
sary of Flora &
Muse, Houston’s
one-of-a-kind Eu-
ropean-inspired flower market and patisserie!
Flora & Muse opened in August of 2010 at CityCen-
tre, Houston’s newest hot spot for trendy retail, up-
scale dining and luxurious living. Flora & Muse is a
multifaceted bistro with both fast casual and full
service dining and lounging options. The CityCen-
tre venue merged traditional restaurant elements
with a jazzy bar atmosphere while also offering
fresh flowers, floral arrangements, and a patisserie
filled with delectable, freshly baked goods.
“A place where friends, fashionistas, artists, pro-fessionals and starry-eyed lovers could meet for coffee, dinner, a fabulous pastry or simply for
inspiration.” Flora & Muse offers a vari-
ety of dining options, from
breakfast and coffee to
dinner and drinks, your
choices are endless.
Choose from a wide se-
lection of coffee, tea, juic-
es and smoothies to hy-
drate your body and soul.
While you’re there why not
snatch up a mouthwater-
ing main dish or savory
appetizer. For all you work-
aholics out there, stop in
after work and grab your-
self a glass of imported
wine or specialty cocktail.
Their delicious menu is
sparked with an interna-
tional flair that makes any
visit an adventure!

Flora & Muse embraces an original concept that
mixes flowers, foods and friends. Not only does
the food and service top the charts, but the at-
mosphere and interior is out of this world... Or
shall I say out of this ‘country.’
Upon strolling into bistro, visitors of Flora & Muse
will feel the need to ask the friendly host, “Are
you sure I am in the right place? I don't remem-
ber jumping on a plane to Europe today!” The
reason for this can simply be explained by the
awe-inspiring interior. You can accredit this to
Houston interior design firm, Laura U.
Laura Umansky, owner and creative director of
Laura U, hit the nail on the head upon complet-
ing this project. She achieved her client’s vision of
incorporating an edgy Victorian feel along with a
residential feel, as if you were enjoying high tea in
a friends living room.
The interior can be described as a “modern vin-
tage” design. The design team at Laura U had to
be very creative in making sure all the elements
of Flora & Muse were implemented. They com-
bined new furnishings with vintage found pieces
to create the look. Their vintage findings include
settees that were reupholstered in current fabrics
and vintage frames that surround the two huge
graphic pieces by local artist Imago Dei. This chic
bistro has several lighting features of grand chan-
deliers, sconces and ornate table lamps. The pat-
terned wall coverings also serve as mesmerizing
eye candy!

Indian Spiced Chicken PitasIndian Spiced Chicken PitasIndian Spiced Chicken PitasIndian Spiced Chicken PitasIngredients:
• 1 pound organic boneless, skin-
less chicken breasts, trimmed
• 1 1/2 teaspoons gram masala ,
(see Note), divided
• 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
• 1 cup thinly sliced seeded organ-
ic cucumber
• 3/4 cup organic nonfat plain yo-

• 1 tablespoon chopped fresh
cilantro , or mint
• 2 teaspoons organic lemon juice
• Freshly ground pepper, to taste
• 4 6-inch whole-wheat pitas,
warmed
• 1 cup shredded organic romaine
lettuce
• 2 small or 1 large organic toma-
to, sliced • 1/4 cup thinly sliced organic red
onion
Time: 30 minutes
Makes 4 servings
Make Ahead Tip:
Prepare through Step 2. Refrigerate
the chicken in an airtight container
for up to 2 days.
Note:
Garam masala is a flavorful, fra-
grant blend of dry-roasted ground
spices used in Indian cooking. It is
available in the spice section of
most supermarkets and specialty
stores.
Tip:
To oil a grill rack, oil a folded paper
towel, hold it with tongs and rub it
over the rack. (Do not use cooking
spray on a hot grill.)
This is by far one of our favorite recipes. It’s flavorful, healthy and very filling. We dare you to try it!

Having fresh flowers at the office or at my home is a must. Greenery brings so much joy to my life especially beautiful bouquets from Bohemia Flowers. Their gorgeous arrange-
ments are creative and original. Any given Sunday afternoon, you can find me at Tiny Boxwoods sipping on a cappuccino out on their lovely patio, catching up with friends after a busy work week or reading a
good book.
I think its safe to say that Indika is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The Indian cuisine is to die for, not to mention the excellent service. This place gives me the warm fuzzies each time I walk in.

Red Door in Houston’s Midtown is my fa-vorite place to lounge on the weekends. I love viewing the city skyline from their upstairs pa-tio. The atmosphere is lovely. It’s a fantastic place to relax or mingle with your friends!

alley!
These two—toned peep toe pumps are my ab-solute favorite pair of shoes! They are perfect for any occasion with just the right amount of height! I wore them to our Grand Expansion
Event in July.
