Springboro Junior High Increased time for instruction ! Restructuring from periods of 43 to 60 minutes ! Equals an additional 75 hours of instruction in

the combined areas of English/language arts, science, social studies, and mathematics. !  More time for small group instruction !  More time for project-based learning !  More time for writing across the curriculum

Springboro Junior High ! Increased elective courses

Schedule ! Seven Periods

"  Six instructional periods "  One lunch period

! Four core classes ! Two additional periods (electives or study hall)

"  Elective courses are one quarter, one semester, or year-long

Eighth grade electives ! Students may only enroll in one study

hall at a time. ! Students must follow a progression of

study. (For example, Introduction to Engineering must be taken before other Project Lead The Way classes.)

! There are no other requirements for eighth grade electives in 2016-2017*.

*Applies to Class of 2021 only.

! Band, Strings, and Choir are year-long courses

! Music in Film is a semester course ! Art I and Art II are quarter classes

Fine Arts Courses

! Computer Applications is a quarter class !  Similar to computer class offered this year

! Computer Coding is a quarter class ! Careers and Consumer Concepts is a

quarter class. !  required for incoming seventh grade !  optional for eighth grade

STEM Courses ! Gateway Project Lead the Way (PLTW)

"  Introduction to Engineering (semester) is a prerequisite for the additional PLTW electives and must be taken first

Additional PLTW Electives ! Quarter classes ! May be taken in any order after intro course

"  Elements in Engineering (1/4) "  Magic of Electrons (1/4) "  Flight and Space (1/4)

Foreign Language Courses ! Courses are year-long ! Students earn high school credit ! French, Spanish, or German ! Students who successfully complete one

semester in seventh grade this year may take their language choice in eighth grade.

! Students who want to start a language in eighth grade also may do so now.

Continuing Electives Students who started programs such as international languages (Spanish, French and German) or music in seventh grade may continue with both a music performance and international language course in eighth grade.
