ROD FULLER ESTATE, OWNER Sedgwick County Fairgrounds - Julesburg Lunch By Steger BBQ By Ken McDowell Sports Editor ILIFF – It was tough for the Caliche Buffaloes to get their offense going in their first Plains Conference game of the season Friday in 8-man football action on Homecoming night at Caliche against the Dayspring Christian Eagles. The Buffs dropped the game by a 26-0 score to the second-ranked Eagles, falling to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the Plains Conference. Dayspring Christian improves to 5-0 and 1-0. Dayspring led 12-0 at the end of the first quarter and added touchdowns in the second and third period to seal the victory over the Buffs. A couple of times in the second quarter Caliche drove into the red zone but was denied the endzone by the Dayspring defense. “Dayspring Christian is a very good team defensively,” said Caliche Coach Paul Zink. “We had a couple of chances to score in the second quarter by getting into the red zone but we couldn’t get it done. “If we would have scored those times I think it would have been a different game. I thought we played well defensively, but we just didn’t get it done offensively.” Senior quarterback Colby Duncan rushed for 97 yards on 22 carries to lead the Buffalo ground game; freshman Josh Kokes had 44 yards on 10 carries; senior Bruce Taylor 16 yards on 8 carries and sophomore Taylor Houghton 10 yards on 3 carries. Duncan was 2-for-10 passing with 3 interceptions. Senior Derrick Pierce had a catch for 29 yards and Taylor had the other reception for 20 yards. On defense Pierce led the Buffs in tackles with 12 and Duncan 11. Taylor and senior Isaac Schumacher each recovered a Dayspring fumble. The Buffs will travel to Haxtun Friday in quest of their first conference win. Haxtun is 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the Plains Conference after losing 52-14 Friday at top-ranked Sedgwick County. “I don’t know a ton about Haxtun except that they are big up front,” Zink reported. “They have a good quarterback so we will try to control the line of scrimmage and get back on track offensively.” ESTES PARK – A first half goal by senior Sam Chaney stood up as the Sterling Tiger soccer team took a 1-0 win at Estes Park Saturday in non-region action. The Sterling defense was tough all day Saturday helping to beat Estes Park for the second time this year. Both teams met in Sterling on Sept. 12 in a Region 4 match with the Tigers winning 4-1. In Saturday’s re-match Sterling took 7 shots on goal, led by junior Dustin Quint and sophomore Ernesto Ochoa with 3 each. Chaney took only 1 shot, but made it count by booting in what proved to be the game-winning goal. Senior goalkeeper Erick Krier was tough at the net to record the shutout while saving 7 Estes Park shots. The Tigers, 6-4, will host Frontier Academy, 5-5, Thursday at 4 p.m. in a non-region match. On Saturday Sterling will travel to Fort Collins to take on Liberty Common in non-region action. The Tigers return home Tuesday to host Valley at 4 p.m. in Region 4 action. Sterling thumped Valley 8-1 in a non-region match at home on Sept. 17. Registration is underway for the upcoming City of Sterling, 2015- 2016 Youth Basketball Program.
