HARMS BROTHERS TRUCKING, OWNER Sat., Dec. 5, 2015 @ 11 a.m. 108 Logan St. (Main Street) in Fleming Lunch By Steger BBQ By Ken McDowell Sports Editor The Sterling Tiger wrestling team has come a long way in the past few years and this year’s squad hopes to keep the momentum rolling. The Tigers open the 2015-16 grappling season Tuesday in a non-league dual at Fort Morgan, and will have 5 members from last year’s team that competed in the Class 3A State Tournament last year after qualifying 8 wrestlers. Seniors on the team are Josh Baray, Colby Duncan, Patrick Holtzhauser and Erick Krier. Last year Duncan was runner-up in the 113 lb. class at state for the second straight year; Krier was 1-2 in the 138 lb. class and Holtzhauser was 1-2 at 195 lbs. Juniors are Jake Breidenbach, Justin Gonzales, Anthony Jimenez, Mikhail Jimenez, Nicolas Jones, Dylan Prelle, Fabian Soto and Mikayla Brink. Last year at state Breidenbach placed sixth in the 120 lb. class and Soto was 0-2 at 285 lbs. Last year Prelle wrestled in the 160 lb. class. Peyton Kloberdanz, also a junior, competed on the varsity level last year but will miss this season due to a knee injury he suffered during the football season. Sophomores are Tyler Fleharty, Isaiah King, Ernesto Ochoa, Giovanni Shortino and Pacen Whited. Freshmen are Eleazar Chavez, Adrian Cullip, Isaac DeLeon, Zachary Loft and Kendrick Thompson. In addition to sending 8 wrestlers to state last year, the Tigers have had quite a recent run of state champions. Joel Contreras, who graduated last year, won back-to- back Class 3A state titles in 2014 in the 145 lb. class and 2015 at 152 lbs. In 2012 Luke Engelhaupt became the first Tiger in 20 years to win a state title, that one coming in Class 4A at 170 lbs. Also last year Jacob Beltran, who was a senior, was runner-up at 106 lbs. and Zach Little, who also graduated, posted a 0-2 mark at 220 lbs. Last year the Tigers placed seventh in the Class 3A state meet with a score of 87.5. Sterling Coach Chad Duncan is confident the Tigers can keep the momentum rolling this year. “We have a pretty good nucleus back this year,” he observed, “with 5 state qualifiers. That’s always good to have kids like that who knows what it takes to get to the state tournament. “Hopefully we can start where we left off last year with those 5 guys leading us and get other kids stepping into the lineup and getting to state. It’s tough to lose the kids from last year’s team, but that’s high school sports and we are looking for some of the underclassmen to step up this year and wrestle to their abilities.” So far the weight classes for the season opener next Tuesday are still undecided. Last year Baray wrestled on the JV team and Coach Duncan hopes that he, along with Loft, can step into the 106 or 113 lb. classes. Whited can also slip into the 113 or 120 lb. classes, according to the Sterling coach. “Basically we have multiple wrestlers in the bottom 6 weights,” he added. Coach Duncan reported that his son Colby could make the jump up to the 126 lb. class this year after placing second at state last year in the 113 lb. division. “I know that’s moving up 2 weight classes, but that’s kind of what Colby is thinking right now,” Coach Duncan said. “That’s where he wants to be and maybe keep Breidenbach at 120 lbs. or maybe even at 126 lbs. Where one goes we will put the other one in the other spot.” Holtzhauser could move down to the 182 lb. class from 195 where he was 1-2 at state last year while Krier could move from 138 lbs. to the 145 lb. division, according to Coach Duncan. “We also lose Peyton Kloberdanz because of his football injury, which is a pretty big blow for us,” he added. “We will have to see if that will cost us a forfeit, because we still don’t know where the other kids may fit in. “Dylan Prelle may wrestle in the 152 lb. class. I think the toughest weight classes for us to fill will be at 195 lbs. and 220 lbs. We have some younger kids who can fill those spots, but we will have to see where they can help us out. After we get through the month of December we will know more. “I’m not sure if we will have to forfeit some of the weight classes, but we’re hoping some of our state qualifiers can score some big points for us.” It’s always said that in every other sport Sterling High School (SHS) teams compete in that the Patriot League is the toughest in the state. It’s certainly true in wrestling as the league consists of Valley, University, Lyons, Strasburg, Brush, Eaton, Estes Park, Platte Valley and Highland. Valley won the Class 3A state title last year with 126.5 points; Brush was runner-up with 121.5 points and Platte Valley third with 107.5 points. Sterling was also a top 10 team last year by placing seventh. “I think Valley will obviously be good again this year,” Coach Duncan predicted. “They have 40 kids to choose from and it’s pretty easy to find 14 tough ones. They are all good kids and they are also well coached. “I’m not sure what Platte Valley has coming back, but I know Brush graduated a lot of seniors from last year’s team with only one state qualifier coming back.” Last year the Tigers competed in the Class 3A Region 4 Tournament in Montrose and placed second with 187 points. That’s where they SHS senior wrestlers this year are (left to right) Josh Baray, Erick Krier, Colby Duncan and Patrick Holtzhauser. (SPS Photo By Ken McDowell.)
