Dr. Barry O’Nei l l is Cognit ive Lead within the GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Human Performance Lab where he is spearheading research into brain processes in high performers in an effort to assess, monitor and train aspects of cognition that are directly relevant to elite performance. Dr. O’Neill completed his PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychopharmacology from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia in 2008. Since obtaining his PhD, Dr. O’Neill has held various roles within GSK, ranging from early stage drug development in their pharmaceutical division to research on the central effects of novel ingredients, functional foods and herbal extracts for GSK Nutrition.
Cognitive Monitoring in Elite Performance
Traditionally the assessment of cognitive functioning in athletic populations has had limitations in that the neuropsychological tests employed have not been aimed at nor validated in elite athlete populations. Recent advances have led to computerised cognitive testing, developed with athletes in mind, however, despite these advances the development of cognition and monitoring of cognitive states in elite sport has lagged behind other branches of sport science. By applying cognitive testing the athlete and coach will have a shared external reference and repeatable tests to guide training and assessment. This presentation will provide case study data to illustrate these points.

A few years ago, a fresh graduate from the American University of Beirut reached out asking to meet as she was visiting San Francisco. Hind had become a tech sensation in the Middle East. Hind was building Instabeat, the first swimmer device that monitors heart rate amongst other features. The charismatic 20-something founder is not just on a mission to revolutionize swimming tech devices, but also has been on a bigger mission to inspire and encourage more Lebanese women and men to stay, believe and build something meaningful. Her resilience, courage and ambition leave us with no doubt that she will accomplish both her missions.
Technologies for Human Performance
Instabeat is a sports technology startup based in Lebanon, founded in 2011 by Hind Hobeika out of a need for a heart rate monitoring device for her practices. A former professional swimmer herself, she got the idea while training for the American University of Beirut's swimming team. This presentation will discuss this innovative technology and how it increases human performance in swimming.

The Pursuit of Innovation in the Premier League
Many organisations spend considerable sums on collectingdata of their players, but lack the capability to systematically store and analyse the data using s o p h i s t i c a t e d q u a l i t a t i v e t e c h n i q u e s , s u c h a s computational statistics and machine learning. Data gathering for the sake of it can be very futile unless it is used to drive action during the athletic process. While technology on its own cannot guarantee success, the focussing of time and effort in developing robust analyticalprocesses has great potential. Some contemporarypractitioners now have first-hand experience of how theintelligent use of ‘sports analytics’ can improve playeracquisition and performance management.
