Then, out of the blue in October 2010, a callcame from the organisers asking Dave if he would takepart with one other standard wheelchair user to carryout an evaluation and report back after the event.

And so, in April 2011, seated on a Jay J2deep contour cushion in the standard TiLite ZRA he hadhad since 2009, Dave competed in the LondonMarathon, starting from the back of the fun runners.‘The chair was the same as I used it every day,’ he said,‘although I did change the tyres from grips to slicks.’ Asa T10 paraplegic Dave has good upper body strength inhis shoulders and arms and he completed the 26 mile385 yard distance in 5 hours 49 minutes. ‘The chair wasbrilliant,’ said Dave, ‘I had no problems at all. Pushing26 miles is not something you would normally do, so itwas an intensive test of the chair. It shows that thedesign and construction are built to last.’

‘It was a fantastic event,’ he went on. ‘WhenI finished it was a very emotional moment. At one timeI really thought the opportunity had gone.’

Dave obviously made a good case, becausein the April 2012 marathon, six volunteer wheelchairusers, including Dave, again took part. ‘We all gothome in under six hours,’ said Dave, ‘all safe and welland with no issues.’ This time Dave used the TiLite ZRAwith a standard J3 cushion. ‘The roads of London arenot comfortable,’ he explained, ‘they’re full of holes andbumps. However, the absorption of vibration by the chairwas excellent.’

While in hospital in 2008, suffering from a very rarecombination of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) andAcute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) whichattacked his nervous system, Dave Bracher decided thatwhen he returned to fitness he would run the LondonMarathon. Unfortunately for Dave, then in his early forties, the illness, also known as ‘locked in syndrome’, insteadled to paralysis of his lower body. As he put it: ‘some peo-ple get a sports car to celebrate their mid-life crisis, I got awheelchair!’

Dave had applied to run the 2010 marathonas a fun runner and was lucky enough to win a place. In October 2009 he rang the organisers to explain hisnew situation and asked if he could take part instead inan ordinary wheelchair. ‘I explained I wanted to enteressentially as a ‘fun runner’,’ said Dave, ‘but they putup too many hoops for me to jump through. I was newto spinal injury and new to wheelchairs, but it seemeddiscriminatory to me’.

GS DIRECT -Bringing Quality to Life

‘After originally using a Sunrise F45 and, more recently,an Invacare Spectra Plus, combined with an E26 E-fixadd-on drive on a Quickie RXS (mainly for use indoors), Ifound that my mobility issues were still not fully solved.

One of the problems is that I live in avery compact ground floor flat, so I need

something to get around indoors easily. Anotherproblem is that I drive a Sirus WAV (wheelchair

accessible vehicle).I found the answer after several trips to

Naidex and the Mobility Roadshow where Ilooked at a number of chairs and decidedthat a mid-wheel drive chair would giveme manoeuvrability indoors, whilst

tackling the hilly terrain where I live, and in addition, I could drive from it.

After trying a couple of different makes,

I settled on the Sunrise Salsa M that Andrew Drummondof Gerald Simonds brought for me to try.

Firstly, it was happy going around indoors andthen, when we went outside on a very difficult footpathto the main road, Andrew had me doing a 360 degreeturn on a steep transverse slope, on a damp surface! Itdid it with ease, and stopped without sliding too!

The next issue to solve was the docking of thechair in the car, so Andrew arranged for the demonstrationchair to be delivered to Bristol Street Versa MobilitySolutions at Batley. I finally took delivery of my newSalsa M a few weeks ago and my mobility has changedenormously. I now have confidence in using it indoorsand outdoors in both town and country. It's so versatileand it has given me back my confidence. Thanks andwell done to both Andrew Drummond and Tony Carter, who also helped in the project. Regards, Frank’
